Tour Day 122, Cruise Day 20 – Day at Sea Tour Day 123, Cruise Day 21 – Shore Excursion: Chiran Samurai Houses & Peace Museum – Kagoshima, Japan Chiran, just nineteen miles south of Kagoshima, is sometimes called Little Kyoto because of the many Samurai residences preserved here. The houses and their beautiful gardens are approximately 250 years old. The gates to the residences, moss-covered stone walls, hedges and black tile roofs evoke the Edo period. The samurais’ descendants still use several of the residences. View them from the outside. Tour the Chiran Peace Museum, which explores the background of Japan’s kamikaze pilots. They trained nearby before embarking on suicide missions against Allied sea vessels. The museum includes photos and final letters of the young pilots, many of whom were teenagers, and it makes a plea ... read more

2023_Blog 15_Japan April 4 Port of Call: Kagoshima, Japan – Weather: 69°F/21°C – Overcast skies – Wind 14 mph. After enjoying a sea day, we returned to the Japanese Islands and docked at Kagoshima today across the harbor from an active volcano. Smoke was viewed emerging from the volcano, which had a substantial eruption just two weeks before we arrived. Today we had another marathon shore excursion experience beginning with a drive down the Satsuma Peninsula. Our first stop was at the Sengan-en Garden also known as the Iso Garden. Once the home of the local samurai lord the site has been restored. Many historical sites in Japan had been destroyed during the nation’s multiple civil wars and during the period when Japan adopted Western industrial and political ideas during the late 19th Centu... read more

SC writes: Yesterday we blasted south via Shinkansen to “sunny” Kagoshima only to find it raining. Apparently it has been very wet down here with floods and all sorts...but we just got a bit damp. Having checked into our latest hotel (more room but no Onsen, shuttle bus or free coffee), we set off with borrowed unbrellas to explore, mainly in the sheltered arcades of the Tenmonkan downtown area. They clearly get a lot of wet weather here - there are even “free to borrow” umbrellas on the Trams. We researched options and made plans for the next two days. Tomorrow we’re off on another side trip by train but today we got a one day bus and tram pass and used that to get around. Mercifully the rain held off and we able to get ... read more

Thursday, 22nd October 2015 I jumped into one of the sushi restaurants within JR Kagoshima Station for dinner. My sushi experience was however a mixed affair. The Tamago Sushi and Chawanmushi tasted great. However, the Kagoshima Special sushi was just so-so. The salmon tasted fresh even though it was nothing to rave about. After dinner, I wandered around the city and headed to the riverside to enjoy the cool breeze at night. This was my final evening in the city and I was determined to end my trip on a sweet note. With the giant ferris wheel right behind me, I hurried to one of the restaurants that served the Shirokuma. This was a shaved ice dessert topped with various fruits and condensed milk and made to shape like a bear. Very kawaii and certainly a ... read more

Wednesday, 21st October 2015 I have a full day in Kagoshima today to explore the city proper. With sights scattered along the major public transportation points, this was an easy journey that allowed plenty of time for me to reflect in between places of interest. Starting from the JR Kagoshima Station, my first stop for the day was a visit to the Museum of the Meiji Restoration. Located along the Kotsuki River, this was a mere 5 minutes from where I started. Other noteworthy sites around the vicinity included the birthplace of Saigo Takamori as well as a replica of the Samurai House which was a common sight during the pre-Meiji Restoration era. After immersing myself on some Japanese history, I took to the Shiroyama Observatory which commanded a great view of downtown Kagoshima and Sakurajima ... read more

Day 7 48 miles. Ave 13.2 mph. Ascent 907 m. Temp 27 deg. What another wonderful day. When we set off at 9am it was already getting towards 20 degrees and very little cloud. The road, as usual followed the coastline heading further south but this morning the bulk of it was spent on cycleways, most of which were old railway lines, through wooded areas and small fRming country. The morning was made more interesting when our guide Daisuke set us a challenge to get two selfies each with a local. We had to stop someone and greet them with ’hello’ in Japanese, followed by ’together OK?’ This was phonetically. Kenyouchi, ishone. The first chap I got was a man about to go fishing and was shocked and giggled when asked but played the part. My ... read more

A one hour drive to Chiran to see the well-preserved residences of Samurai warriors. The houses are occupied and several of the owners allow garden visits. One lady did let us photograph her living room from outside. Another resident served us green tea in her garden. A couple of miles down the road we visited the Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots. A very sobering experience and a beautiful tribute to brave young men.... read more

After our visit to Nara we had two more days left in Kyoto. At the time I was doing my diploma we had an exchange student from Japan in our lab. We hadn’t had any real contact for the last 4 years, but he read our blog and contacted me via facebook. Therefore we decided to meet for dinner on the 24th. When we arrived in Kyoto in the morning I had at first to get the address of a kendo shop at the tourist information center (Reason in the next kendo related post). In search of the center, we mixed up the Japanese floor ordering. In Japan there is no ground level, it is already called first floor. So we went to the third instead of the second floor, but this was a lucky accident, ... read more

JAPAN In order to try to catch up with the blog, this is the itinerary for Japan, we are going to put a few more pics on 15th March - Kagoshima 17th March – Yokohama 19th March – Kobe 21st March – Nagasaki All the ports of call into Japan were maiden, that is, the Queen Elizabeth had not visited before. Our overall impression of Japan was how clean the place was, (they don’t have rubbish bins on the street for instance). The people were so friendly and helpful, they have little English and there are not many European signs. However the guides were great and sometimes very amusing, having not been to Europe to study English, their interpretations were ‘quaint’ to say the least. We did a tour at each port of call which with ... read more

Last meal with our adopted friends was brilliant we had oysters, squid and pork and chicken tempura washed down with a couple of beers (yes, only a couple). Anyway whilst eating our meal we were watching TV and noticed that they were showing landslides in Japan. We asked what was going on and they said to us in pidgeon Japanese "no wowies souf (not quite Japanese but that is what it sounded like)". We explained we were going south (or souf, ha ha) - "ah so" they said "no go souf, bad". We showed them on the map we were going to Kagoshimo - "oh bad, bad" laughing at us. We decided to get up early and go to the information before we set off south to Kagoshimo, the lady there said everything ok - so ... read more
