My first blog (not a blog virgin any more)
Published: January 30th 2007Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » SapporoKiroro, Hokkaido (in the middle of mountains) HI everyone in Perth and the rest of the world. How are all my friends? Well I have finally broken the seal and joined the rest of those crazy (deranged) bloggers. So it has no been over two months since I left dear old (warm) Perth for a freezing winter wonderland (no internet access, not sure if it is really a wonderland). Quite contrary to what I had imagined, my body got use to the below zero temperatures wuite quick. Perth being 36 degrees when i left and being between -5 and -15 degrees over here. Not sure if my busy friends in Perth have time to watch the news or check how the weather is like where their beloved friend Yorma is (haha) but Japan, unlike last year ... read more
The short career of two professional snowboarders, and too much japanese tv!
Published: February 2nd 2007Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » SapporoArrival Day We had an early flight from Hiroshima this morning. Bit of a hassle getting from our hotel, to the train station on the tram, then onto the bus to the airport, then checking in. We had been a bit concerned about the 15kg luggage limit - which we were well over - but noone seemed to care very much and check in went quite smoothly. Easy flight and got into Hokkaido about lunchtime to meet our Ski Japan rep. She had to meet a few more people so we had a bit of time to grab lunch and check out the airport - always exciting. The bus ride out to the village was a good 2.5 hours long but was actually quite a nice ride. The roads were good and it was just fantastic ... read more
The accommodation in Hakodate was great, the service was very good also and the amenities were brand new and clean as a whistle. I awoke in the middle of the night as the heater was on too hot only to find it was snowing and raining at the same time. The rain was melting the snow which was disappointing but still great to see snow none the less. After I showered the hostess was kind enough to give me some sweets and a can of coffee for my journey. Upon leaving Hakodate no more than 5 minutes into the trip we entered tons of snow fields, it appeared to be new snow but only a fairly light covering. After leaving Sapporo station I set out to find accommodation and the cheapest place I could find was ... read more
After the muggy, swelting days in Thailand, Niseko's sub zero temperatures shocked all our immune systems. On top of this, my sister's suitcase was lost somewhere between Hong Kong and Hokkaido. But it's so great that families can share everything - clothes, toiletries, food and ..... colds! In our tiny Japanese style accommodation, there was sore throats, runny noses, cramps, stomach aches...etc. It was only a matter of time! But, we survived by assigning people to corners and attics. Despite our freezing complaints, it was actually a really warm year for the snowfields. Niseko is famous for powder snow but it only snowed twice! When my sister and I got sick of ‘ice skating’ on the more popular front slopes, we took a walk on the wild side through the rocks, trees and bamboo in the ... read more
Fourteenth and Fifteenth Weeks - Dec. 2 - 15
Published: December 15th 2006Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » SapporoFourteenth and Fifteenth Weeks - Dec. 2 - 15 Dec. 2: The whole family went to an Onsen again this afternoon. It’s the same one that we went to last week. It was a lot of fun. It was also snowing today and is supposed to snow all week long. I’m excited for it. Some of my friends are going skiing on Sunday. I decided not to since I’ve only skied twice and don’t want to risk breaking something three weeks before I fly home. For those of you who don’t know, I will be leaving Japan and arriving at home on Christmas Day. I can’t wait! It’ll be exciting to have two Christmas Days in one year in two different countries. Dec. 8: Hi-C had a farewell party for all the foreign exchange students. It ... read more

Tenth and Eleventh Weeks Nov. 4-17 Nov. 4: Loreli, Kelsey, Rowena and I watched a movie and made Chocolate Chip Banana Bread at my house. I think I may be the only exchange student whose host family has an actually oven to bake in. Everyone else only has a fish oven, which is only big enough to fit about two fish. That’s something to note, most of the baked goods that people eat come from one of the several bakeries around the city. Nov. 6: Mama and her cousin and I went to the Ishiya Chocolate Factory, and Hokkaido University. At Hokkaido University we got to see the Poplars which are famous for there fall leaves. They were beautiful. My pictures don’t do justice for their bright color. We also went to Ishiya Chocolate Factory. While ... read more
Twelfth and Thirteenth Weeks - Nov. 18 - Dec. 1
Published: December 6th 2006Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » SapporoTwelfth and Thirteenth Weeks - Nov. 18 - Dec. 1 Nov. 19: Mama, her cousin, and I went to an Onsen close to our house. I love them; they make me really relaxed it’s nice. The best part about this Onsen was the three individual tubs that reminded me of old fashioned wash basins (they were cast iron). Nov. 22: I went to another elementary school and this time the 6th graders showed us their talents. They showed us several traditional games of Japan. It was a lot of fun. There is also a marble game, but the interesting thing is that the marbles are flat. Not round like I think of a marble. I go back next Wednesday again. It should be fun. We also get to eat lunch with the students, which is fun. ... read more
Eighth and Ninth Weeks - Where has the time gone?
Published: November 27th 2006Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » SapporoEighth and Ninth Weeks - Where has the time gone? I can’t believe that my last entry was a month ago already. It seems like I just wrote it. Oct. 28: I went to the Sapporo Dome. Mama and I went there to see the architecture of it. It’s awesome! It’s the only one in the world that has a movable soccer field that comes in, over the baseball field. We were able to get inside the dome for free since the Nippon Ham Fighters won the Championship. (Nippon is Japanese for Japan, they are Sapporo’s baseball team. They haven’t won the championship in 40 some years.) It was free admission for the first three days after they won. There were also sales at every store in the city. I guess we picked the right day. ... read more
Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Weeks Sep.25-Oct. 22
Published: November 2nd 2006Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » SapporoSept. 25: I learned how to do Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging. It took about half an hour to complete the arrangement. It was fun to learn. Oct 1: Mama, Grandma, Mama’s Aunt and I went to Okurayama. It is the Olympic ski jump for the Sapporo winter games in 2007. We got to go to the top of the jump and watch skiers as they practiced for the upcoming winter games. There isn’t any snow there yet so it was very interesting watching them practice. At the bottom of the jump is a museum with every winter Olympic game that there is. The museum was a lot of fun and since I could take pictures I took a ton. In the museum there were several interactive exhibits which we all took advantage of. They also had ... read more
As part of the foreign exchange program the elementary schools ask for exchange students to come and teach the children about their country. This semester there were two schools that asked for foreign students to come twice to their school. I chose to go to the school that wanted two people per classroom for a total of eight people. We needed to think of a song and game that we could teach the children (3rd graders). My partner, Kelli, and I decided to teach the children “I’m a Little Tea Pot” and “Red Light, Green Light”. We went to the school twice. The first time we told the children about ourselves and answered the questions that they had prepared for us. We also taught them the song. We did not have sheet music for them so ... read more
