Ranajky davame v 711 bo v tejto dedine neni nic otvorene, ono tu prakticky neni vobec nic az na jednu restiku a 711. Moj sofer ma berie cez hory k jazeru toya.

Hokkaido - Sapporo and Niseko We flew from Cairns into Tokyo on the Jetstar Dreamliner which was pretty comfortable as we had a spare seat between us. Landing in Narita we got on the Skyliner which costs about $25 each and goes into Nippon then Ueno station. Our ryokan was only a 10 minute walk from the Ueno station, but it was a very cold walk, as Tokyo had a cold snap that day and was at about 3 degrees. Luckily we had come prepared and had extra jackets, beanie and scarves in our carry on. My sister, Celia, met us at the ryokan that was a nice big Japanese room with our own bathroom. The stairs were so steep it feels like you're going to fall backwards with your luggage. It was in a really ... read more

This place is so weird...but so amazing...so weird... We took the short of two hours flight on Peach, a Japanese low cost....with very very small space between seats, reaching Sapporo airport just on time for dinner before taking the 3 hours shuttle bus all the way to Niseko. The New Chitose airport, 50km from Sapporo is actually a funny adventure...as there is a huge shopping center in the middle of it. The bus ride give us a good idea of what was lying ahead. Few Japanese, some Honkies and Chinese....and a lot of Aussies with few Europeans. We arrived at the Black Diamond Lodge just before 11pm. This place is suppose to be the "cheap" option....trust me, there is no cheap options for lodging around Niseko....there are just cheaper ones...and I had no intention to stay ... read more

The snow here is amazing; especially for this bloke from Oz where snow is measured in centimetres (if we're lucky) as opposed to here where it's measured in metres. Some of the drifts are still 2-3m deep in the village and up to 5m on the upper slopes of Mt Niseko. To everyones delight it snowed heavily overnight, giving rise to eager anticipation of powder skiing. The only reason that I'm sharing this enthusiam for the sticky powdery stuff is to soften the steeper icy runs, which were the cause of me landing heavily on my bum several times yesterday - at least that's my excuse. The excitement of powder however wasn't welcomed when we walked to the village for dinner last night while trying to restrain two lively boys from tossing sticky snow balls at ... read more

This isn't something that I imagined I would be doing only two years ago but my partner, Jenny, and some of her family were going to Japan for a skiing holiday so I thought ... why not. Actually, visiting Japan for any reason had never been on my horizon. Having learnt to ski only two years ago I have to admit that I was a little hesitant, particularly given that I had only ever skied the relatively comfortable slopes of Mount Buller (in the Victorian Alps). The thought of the potential for powder snow (aparently a rarity at Buller) seemed to excite the rest of the Devenish family; especially 11yo Georgia, 8yo Lauchlan and 6yo Benny. The two older kids delight in out-skiing me on any slope, which is only to be expected given that grandmar ... read more

We managed to find a snowboarding deal at the travel agent in Noichi, where some of them even speak English! We got return flights from Kochi to Chitose, return bus transfer to hotel, 6 nights in a business hotel (with breakfast), 2 lunches, equipment rental, and a 6 day lift pass for all mountains (including night ski) - all for JPY88,000 each, which is about £600. So all that leaves is 4 lunches, 6 dinners, and the ever compulsory omiyage. Monday We left home at 06:35, 5 minutes later than planned. But my landlady’s husband (who incidentally is the spitting image of Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid) drove us to the airport, and he seemed to enjoy speed, so we got there in good time. At the check-in counter, we were told to go to ... read more

A ski trip to Niseko seemed the perfect way to end my 2months of working in Perth's 35+ degree weather, after just hearing by word of mouth how good the snow was there I booked my flights and accomodation in about august and didnt really think twice about it till about a week before i left. I arrived in Sapporo late tuesday afternoon and caught the bus up to Hirafu, when i arrived in Hirafu it was about -20 and i was just wearing my trackies and a jumper. The kind staff at the welcome centre called the backpackers and they came and picked me up, which worked really well. After a good nights sleep, i woke to about 20cm of fresh powder, the lady at the reception had told me that they knew of somebody ... read more

I've been in the resort for about a week now, and we've had over a metre of fresh snow so far, and it's snowing very lightly as I write this. We were all moved into one house together - the skiers and the snowboarders, and it just so happens to be brand new, and very plush! It's a bit of a hike from the slopes, mind, but we can slide across the carparks on the way back at least. The town has 5 onsens - thermal baths, (need to explore these) and the resort is actually down the side of a volcano; i'm not sure if it's extinct or not! This explains the baths, and the horrendous smells at various points on the slopes! There's a spectacular volcano opposite, too, looking for all the world like ... read more

Day one dawned, and after wishing the aussies in the lodge a good day I was whisked away to meet the rest for avalanche training. Despite the jetlag I took copious notes, and then it was time for the transeiver hunt. It's deceptively difficult, and on flat ground it was taking us at least 5 minutes to find the box; that's pretty frightening as 93% of people don't survive beyond 15 minutes, and we'd still have to get to the avalanche site in the real thing! In the afternoon we headed up the mountain to go digging.. We were each given a shovel and told to dig a vertical face in the snow so that we could check the layers, and distinguish the good and bad types of snow. It was about this time that a ... read more

Flying out of the states was a whole lot easier than flying in, but everyone still has to take their shoes off, without exception. I'd allowed 3 hours, and I was at the gate in 20 minutes. Oh well! The 12 hour flight seemed shorter than that, even allowing for a couple of hours kip. On the way in the captain spoke over the pa to tell us there was a good view of mount Fuji, and sure enough, there it was, rising from the haze and completely dominating the landscape; you can see why it's so important to the Japanese. On landing my snowboard was almost on the carousel before I got there! Had to wait for my backpack, mind, and I started to remember why I like Japan so much; it's the little quirks. ... read more
