Et le periple continue... Vendredi, 28 septembre. Jour 12 Nous sommes a Hiroshima depuis 2 jours. Our trip to Hiroshima was an incredibly eye-opening experience. Having been to Pearl Harbour as a teenager and reading about how bad the Japanese were, seeing the other side of the story was somewhat more compelling and balanced out my perspective. Hiroshima city is a really beautiful place, and in September it was still quite warm and humid. The giant park that is a shrine to the victims of the bombing is green and full of life, both in terms of plant-life and locals, including many local school children who approach us and want to talk to us in English to practice their English skills. Many of them are doing school assignments on what Hiroshima means and why tourists visit. We spend some time talking to the kids. We took the train to the ferry and ... read more

Arrived late into Hiroshima, and staying at another little ryokan. This one a little more of a ryokan hotel, since it is in the middle of the city - we are a short walk to the A-Dome and the Peace Park. The A Dome is the remains of the only building standing after the bomb was dropped. Went for a little orienting walk after showering, grabbed a beer and hit the sack for much needed sleep. That was the last of our long travel runs, thank goodness. We are here for 3 nights and that means that I need to get organized for some accommodation and plans once the trip ends in Kyoto on Friday. Think I will treat myself there for a bit. Today was SUNNY! and relatively WARM! Will update more in the next ... read more

Woke up at 4:30am this morning - on my own accord thankfully - to catch the 6:00am bus for the 3-hour ride to Hiroshima. "Hooray for nice weather!" I thought to myself as I looked out the bus window, enjoying the mountain scenery on this very crisp and clear morning. Denise, her visual senses overwhelmed from such glorious sunlight, promptly fell asleep to prevent her eyeballs from exploding at the rare sight of clear blue sky. Given the balmy weather today, it's kind of odd that the highlight of the drive were the tunnels. We passed through at least a dozen, most of which were over a kilometer in length, and the longest being slightly more than 3.5km! I guess when 80% of the country is mountainous, your options of where to place roads can be ... read more

I know, I know, I shouldn’t have called this entry that but I’ve heard it so many times since I’ve told people that I was coming to Hiroshima so I had to include it. OK I hope it works this time, I wrote an entry yesterday but for some reason when I tried to submit it there said there was an error and my entry was erased, I didn’t have time to write another one so I’m including it in today’s one. Hopefully I’ll be able to update this fairly regularly as I don’t want to be writing a whole weeks worth of experiences at one time, it would be too long! And I’m a poor backpacker in an expensive country, so time is money! I left my new hometown of Hakodate on Friday 5th Aug ... read more
