I love this quotation, “Because you know how to feel, and knowing how to feel is more important than how you feel. Deadness of soul is the only unpardonable crime, and if there is one thing happiness can do it is mask deadness of soul”. So said Stephen Fry in his letter to his 16 year old self recently published in ‘The Guardian’. Why have I included this rather serious quote at the beginning of today’s blog entry? Well, it occurred to me recently that Ian and I do tend to talk about work rather a lot and most of what we say is quite negative. Ian is stuck in a horrible situation at work where his daily schedule is totally random (there’s no pattern controlling which days he goes to which schools) and he often ... read more

Greetings and Hello. Its been 50 years since I have updated this. BUT I am back at it. I have tons of pictures. However, to save my sanity I will only post a few. So as many of you may have heard back at home. I am out here for an extended period of time. That being the case I have moved into an apartment. So I will post pictures of what my fine apartment looks like. Also I will throw in some pictures from Nikko. It is a wonderful place north of Tokyo near Utsunomiya. I was with some of my Japanese co-workers and they showed me around. It was a wonderful and cold trip. So with that being said, here are some pictures. Oh I will post a concert photo or two as well. ... read more

The parentals have arrived! I got to the airport and waited for them with butterflies in my stomach. I guess I was a little nervous because it had been exactly 4 months since I had last seen them (a record for me) and I really was anticipating their arrival. We reunited, we hugged, we got on the train. Since I have a great sense of direction (not!) , I managed to get us lost on the way from the airport to my apartment. I ended up getting us on a Rapid Express train heading north instead of southwest. Oops, my bad. I am used to being lost and not knowing where the hell I am, but my mom looked super worried--which is completely understandable. I mean, imagine setting foot in a foreign country you've never visited, ... read more

So feeling a little down of late, I think I know why though. I blame Christmas. I was never one of those people who necessarily looked forward to Christmas with great enthusiasm but now it’s not here I really miss it. Well, I say it’s not here, it kind of is in a way. It’s commercialized here in exactly the same way it is in the UK but I think in the UK we relish a sort of imagined historical tradition of Christmas that revolves awkwardly around Christianity, Dickens and some sort of ancient pagan ritual but here in Japan it is truly invented; imported as if it were flown here on an airplane sometime in the 1980s. If Christmas felt shallow back home it’s the last drop in the barrel here. Add to that the ... read more

So first I must apologise to anyone reading this on a regular basis for the angry rant followed by the long silence, I’ve been coming to terms with a few things! Firstly, the job. I’ll put it in to numbers: Longest stretch without lessons: 8 days. Longest stretch at my base school without lessons: 2 weeks. Number of lessons taught at my visiting school since September: 4 Average number of classes per day: 2 Number of times I’ve taught the same lesson (Self Introduction) 36. The problem is complex. On the one hand the schools don’t see working with an ALT as a priority especially during exam time when the students are drilled in grammar. Also, many teachers simply don’t know how to work with an ALT. They either give the student a script to read ... read more

I have been living in Japan for about 2 ½ months now. It doesn’t even feel like it has been that long and I haven’t even gotten homesick yet. Must be because my mom sends me tortillas from overseas. (Thanks, ma!) Or maybe because when I walked into the cell phone store they were playing Marco Antonio Solis. Odd, huh? Anyways, the crazy thing is that the ‘city’ I live in actually reminds me of El Granjenal (Mexico), except with Japanese people and tons of bikes. There are super narrow streets, rice fields, old homes, giant spiders everywhere (I hate spiders), and countless power lines overhead. There is also a river, a.k.a. breeding ground for pesky mosquitoes (I hate mosquitoes), about 40 feet from my front door and train tracks about 60 feet down the ... read more

1) Schedule no more than an average of two lessons a day but somehow manage to put three identical lessons in a row on some days and no lessons at all on others. 2) Ensure that the ALT teaches the same identical lesson over 30 times in two months. Very occasionally invite the ALT to invent her own activities and then cancel them at the last minute., 3) Ensure that the educational philosophy of the entire country is radically different to the one the ALT is used to but never ever explain why or attempt to discuss differences rationally. 4) When the ALT is present in the staff work room ensure that she is ignored completely however, just at the moment she’s about to relax make some intrusive personal comment or just start reading what’s on ... read more

Yesterday I went to pottery!! Woot! It was really great. I made two bowls, both of which i think will turn out okay...hopefully.... i love clay. it:s squishy and cool and just plain neat. In a couple days i:ll go back and glaze them both and then they:ll be fired. I don:t know much about pottery so if i:m missing somehting i:m hoping my sensei will knock me over the head....hopefully I:ll be able to come home with authentic Japanese bowls. Very cool. they will be pieces of art, just you wait...*she says as they crumble and fall apart* Today the two girls and i went to English class and were taught the proper way to speak english. We english speakers don:t know anything. Its a very complicated, i don:t know how anyone stands learning it ... read more

Well I can honestly say that Nagoya is probably going to be the highlight of my entire trip. Yoriko-san and I traveled to the Inuyama area, about 1.5 hours by train. After arriving there we grabbed lunch and checked out the Shinto Shrine there, Atsusa Jinja. It's a very important Shinto Shrine, dating back to the 3rd century I think. Back in ancient times this would be a destination for people on a spiritual journey. After that had some traditional Japanese sweets at a nice little traditionally styled area, then headed back. That evening went to an aussie bar, nice quiet little place. Ran into a guy that is doing a documentary for the Discovery Channel for a really cool production of Romeo and Juliet.. this production has been years in the making as Romeo is ... read more
