Greetings from Senggigi in Pulau Lombok, the easternmost island in the Nusa Tenggara chain. I left Labuanbajo on the island of Pulau Flores by boat where I booked a 4-day passage aboard a tiny deathtrap named the Tiga Putra, which means "three brothers" in Bahasa Indonesian. I asked our ever-cheerful captain, Iman, if any of the brothers who owned the boat were aboard for the trip: They weren't. Apparently they knew better than to go to sea in this rickety bucket. In fairness, even though the boat lacked even the most basic safety features (like fire extinguishers, liferaft, flares, radio, and compass, to name a few) it was pretty solidly built, and we stayed pretty close to shore the entire time. Our captain, who described himself within the first five minutes of our time onboard as ... read more

On the flight to Lombok we had a small plane and in front of Terry sat a rather 'large' man! He first had to have an extension to his seatbelt. Then after takeoff he immediately pushed his seat back almost hitting Terry in the face. He joined in convesation with his friends "2 men and a woman" in more forward seats. We shall say he was north European so as not to offend any friends, but he was truly obnoxious. This was a 2 1/2 hour flight and he was on his 3rd rum and coke when the cabin were bringing the food round. He sort of demanded a pillow, which of course, they had to oblige. "Never mind" said Michelle, "we will never see him again". We arrived 45 mins drive later at our hotel ... read more

The first hours in Lombok were a discombobulating whirlwind--a feeling we've each had before when landing in a new country after dark. We passed quickly through immigration (where Linz had a friendly conversation with the 16-year-old official over the etymological significance of her last name), changed some money, and were immediately faced with a currency where a trail of zeros splays itself across the entire length of any bill, free of separating commas or any other clue for the clueless. After our thirty minute cab ride, our driver watched with amused patience as we fumbled between 1000 and 10000 rupiah notes. We went to bed exhausted at 9:00pm, and only realized the next morning that our room overlooks the beach and the sea. Lombok is beautiful. It is thick with palm trees. The sand is white ... read more

Folks, chapter two is about to begin. I'm off to Thailand tonight. I managed to get some cheap flights (Bali-KL then KL-Bangkok) with Air Asia for Aus$136. Schweet, eh. However, I think this just buying flights as I go business is gong to get expensive, so on the advice of many, many people, I'm going to look into an around the world ticket. Anyone got light to shed on this for me? So, I plan to jump straight on a train from Bangers to Chang Mai - a long, but cheap way to do it, and something I've got to experience, I'm told. Thanks for lowdown on Thailand Hayds, Jaz, Craig and Pru. With all your information, I have my own personal Lonely planet guide! Wicked, I say! So, I hit the bottle two nights ago ... read more
