We crossed the Bali Sea on Tuesday the 12th Of October by boat with the company "Mahi Mahi". The journey only took 2 hours to complete but it was a gorgeous ride all the way across.I always secretly hope that I'll see dolphins when i ride across tropical waters (disappointment thus far, but fingers crossed i will some day!) We stopped very briefly in Lombok to pick up an islander, then made it straight to Gilli Trawangan in 15 minutes or less later.
Once we arrived we had a hard time trying to find a good room. We needed 3 beds (1 double and a single if possible) and obviously the ones just on the beach were too expensive and the proprietors continually suggested an extra bed on the floor to make it for 3 people. In our case - not acceptable. Eventually we found a sign on the beach front for a place called "Trawangan Oasis" with pool,WiFi,Bike loan, Pool and breakfasts all included for just 341,000 Rupiah -21 Pounds!! an absolute steal. After trying to find the place for a good 20 minutes we decided to take a horse and cart (there are no motorbikes/cars on the island-
lending to the placidity there) to find the much desired oasis. When we Pulled up i jumped out to meet the hotel owner, a lovely woman called Colette from Sydney who showed me the most beautiful room we ha d seen on the island so far with a huge double bed for Nico and I and a double pull out sofa for jenny! Absolutely perfect! And the bathroom was an absolute dream also - stone covered bath and shower partially outside so you can shower with the rays of the sun. I ran back to Inform Nico and jenny that it was just 300,000 rupiah on first offer so we took it and i would advise others to stay here as well. All the other bungalows we had viewed were more expensive with nothing included and right on the main beach so incredibly noisy/busy with no pool or WiFi.
On the 13th We met up with Sonia again who had come out to Gilli Trawangan earlier than ourselves to meet with her islander boyfriend Apin. We went for a few drinks and hung out for a little bit in the "Gilli Boys Bar" on the beachfront. Apin had his
own Catamaran and thought it might be nice to go for lunch on Gilli Meno - just 10 minutes as the crow flies so we hopped down to the beach to jump aboard and sail off into the Bali sea. As Boat rides go it was absolutely amazing to be inches from the water with just a 3 inch thick canoe shaped boat between you and the big blue - Brilliant. We went across to Gilli Meno with Cheshire grins and ate a beautiful lunch on the beach whilst the sunset sizzled the sea and set the sky ablaze, turning the water a deep violet.
The next day Apin and Sonia decided to treat us to something really special - taking us to choice spots in the ocean where we could swim with turtles and feed the fish! Something others would have to pay a pretty penny to do and only for a set amount of time. We had the luxury of only leaving when we had had enough. As we snorkeled for the 1st half hour we saw 3 turtles , i was stunned and in awe of how docile they were. Just floating along at their own
pace and didn't seem to care when we stroked its shell - just eying us like we were flies, interrupting its usually tranquil day.
in the evening we prepared to solidify the memory of this fantasy-like day in the ocean buy inducing some of our own on land. Whilst on Gilli Meno we had managed (through Apin) to procure some fresh Mushrooms to take back with us to Gilli Trawangan. We went back to Sonia and Apin's place and made ourselves some noodles (and for me - cinnamon tea) After the usual cooling/brewing process we drank, smoked and were merry. then we returned to "Gilli Boys Bar" to have a Mushroom Smoothie. Shortly after finishing that the fun times and happy hallucinations set in accompanied by a LOT of laughing.
After a long night of talking, smoking, drinking, laughing, and staring at things for a little bit too long. We headed off back to our Oasis to smoke ,watch 'Breaking bad" and sleep. A perfect day? yes. i think so!
On the 15th we had only one mission - to collect as many R&R points by doing as little as possible. The only reoccurring trajectory any of us followed
was the distance from the sun lounger into the pool. After a Long day (those days never seem to last long enough) we retired to our bungalow for showers and some extra credit in the school of not moving a muscle. Jenny entered the palatial bathroom to find the most important space already occupied - There was a scorpion in the shower. After some quick chat i took a photo and Nico proceeded to kill it with a handy flip flop! Danger over. Ten Minutes or so later (as we are all sharing a bungalow so little privacy is found),Nico and i decided to take a romantic shower together. Mid way through said shower, i spotted an arachnid the size of my hand just half a meter away on the wall Nico was leaning against. Again we broke out the trusty flip flow and the beast was slain. Nightmare lol.
And so ends this tale of adventures from the cradle of the sea to the grave of our plughole.
