Beautiful
View from our lunch table at Rudys. The Gili islands. Wow, what a place. 3 beautiful, beautiful islands bordered by the whitest beaches and coral rimmed reefs. Ryan and I were a bit fed up with Bali in that where we were staying was not particularly nice and the people always trying to sell you stuff was getting annoying. Not to mention that Bali is dead at the moment. So we jumped on the ferry from Padang bay to Lombok and then another ferry from there to Gili Trawangan ( the party island). These islands are tiny, I mean you can walk around any one of them in less than 1 and a half hours. We stayed in a very nice place a block up from the beach for 4 bucks a night which included a fantastic breakfast. The restaurants are awesome. They're all right on the water and have the freshest seafood you will find any where in the world for pittance. Spent the next day exploring a bit and throwing the frizbee on the beach. I finished my book Sperm Wars and promptly moved onto Honeymoon with my Brother, which I have also now finished and am now reading Gary Kirstens' autobiography which is brilliant!. One
On the Ferry
From Bali to Lombok day we did decide try and do something. We rented paddle skis and decided it would be a good idea to paddle around the island. bad idea. We were about halfway round and i dug into the water with my paddle and it simply snapped off, great. So I am floating there dead as a duck with Ryan by my side debating what to do when a freak set of big waves comes through and just nails us. We both go over. I get dragged along the coral on my back, resulting in multiple cuts and scrapes. Ryan loses his glasses and we both lost our tempers as well as had major sense of humour failures. So we drag our ski things to the closest bungalow place. They call a horse cart to pick us up(no cars or scooters on the islands, awesome!) So we cruise back on this thing looking like complete morons, which is probably not too far from the truth anyway. Decided G O D was trying to tell us something and stuck to the hammocks and beach. The one day we had some fantastic shakes in the morn then went exploring, swum and snorkeled. Amazing stuff.
These guys...
As you enter harbour they jump on your ferry and try to sell you anything and everything. nuts Swum with these cool sea turtles and saw a whole lot of stuff. Had a couple of big nights on the islands. Met a fantastic Canadian/American couple, Becky and Pete. So much fun and probably the coolest couple we have met so far in Asia. I would love to have that sort of relationship with my wife in years to come.
A lot of cafes have these booths right on the beach with your own tv and dvd player so that you can watch a movie and eat. Really cool. They have millions of Dvds to choose from. They have zero police on these islands so Ryan and I got away with murder, figuratively. They're sort of self governing bodies that have a main chief guy and police themselves. None of the islands have a pop over 1000 so it is pretty easy to do. Went diving the one day as well, pretty good stuff. Tried the following day but seeing as though I had had quite a few Bintangs and shots of tequila the night before my head was stuffed and could not equalize when going down. Asked the French scuba guy who took me out if he wanted
to join us for a few beers that night, his reply is classic "Non ssank you, my girlfriend, she is coming in 2 days time and I need to be full powwwer when I see her, you know" True that.
Spent one day on Gili Meno as well. Dubbed the 'honeymoon island' (perfect) it was not too far from the truth. Ryan and I shared a cosy bed in a bungalow right on the beach. We each had a fantastic mushroom omelet for lunch and walked around the island and saw some crazy shit, really crazy. Happened upon these two cafe/bungalow places on the opposite side of the island. Talked to the guys that were busy building them. Pretty awesome, just building their dreams on one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Also stumbled upon this huge bird avery and Beatles museum in the middle of the island. Some crazy Aussie guy who like the Beatles and birds has set this thing up in the middle of this tiny island in the middle of nowhere. It was so so so random. There was also a very persistent pineapple lady on the island.
Spent our last of 7 nights on
Umm hello?
I never saw St Peter! Gili Air. Did not really do a whole lot, read and walked along the beach. Had some awesome Red Snapper for dinner.
All in all the Gili islands are incredible. I know I shall be back. I really want to come back to Indo and give it a fair chance. Say 2 months at the least. 13 700 islands to explore!
It's funny that the more I travel and see, the longer my list of places to travel and see grows. Not a bad thing at all.
