Helloha!! We have left the Gili Islands! What an achievement! We have now arrived in Ubud - Bali. We have 10 more days left in Indonesia before flying back to Bangkok from Jakarta so we are taking the slow and scenic route by bus to cross the whole of Java. Our one months stay on Gili Air was great and we really felt very comfortable around everyone there.. but all good things come to an end.. We also still wanted to see Java so it was a wise decision to move on. I will give it another try to upload some pictures but even Bali internet isn't the greatest so it might just be a few pics only. More to come when I get back! Ciao! XX ... read more

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. Have you read it? If not, then you will have no idea what I am talking about. If you have, then you might appreciate the fact that I went and saw Ketut Liyer! I started reading Eat, Pray, Love back home but I decided to hold off and read the part about Bali until I was here. I am so glad I did! It is amazing to live in the same town that she was in, and walk through the amazing places she described. There have been many times I feel as though I have stepped into the book. If you want a more eloquent version of where I live then I suggest to pick up a copy because what I write can't even compare! I had just finished the ... read more

Well, it's been exactly 6 months abroad now. I left my job 8 months ago and spent some time in the US before and over Christmas/New Year's. Part 1: South America (Brazil, Argentina, Chile), Part 2: Asia (Thailand, Vietnam), Part 3 Australasia (Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia). Here I will briefly sum up part 3 as I have done with the other sections, but I will also sum up my final impressions, since this is "supposedly" the end. New Zealand may have to be the winner for natural beauty. This is extremely tough to make the call on, but it does seem everyone is asking me for my favorite. Every turn in the south island seemed to hold something completely new and still astonishing. The people were warm and easy to be a quick friend. The attitude ... read more

Life in Bali definitely takes some time getting used to. It's not so much the rustic style living, or the cold showers or small reptiles crawling in your room- it's learning how to slow down your pace of life! I thought, I am a pretty adaptive person and I would have no problem adjusting into island time. But here in Bali, it is the epitome of island time! I walk into clinic (which is across the road from the ashram) ready to dive in head first to help out any way I can. I quickly learn that it is impolite to just do "something" and the best thing I can do is sit, observe (learn of course) and assist when asked. I have been told that once the traditional midwives become accustomed to me that I ... read more

A yoga teacher training program brought me to Bali. It was a one month intensive and they weren't kidding about the intensive. To my surprise, it was more emotionally and spiritually challenging much more than physically challenging. I underwent everything from fasting on Thursdays, vows of silence, 4 am yoga classes, 6 am meditation daily, lack of sleep to a new diet (raw vegan only) that didn't work well with my body. The group was 40 women and 1 male....I had a roommate and 6 women in the house. Privacy was rare and estrogen was high. Week 3 was a digestive cleanse entailing 80 pills a day (40 in the morning and 40 at night) which completely weakened my system while I was still doing hard physical yoga classes. This cleanse was worse for others than ... read more

Where am I again? Can I really be in Bali?! It's hard to believe I made it to Indonesia in one piece, with no travel delays or lost baggage. I hope this is a good sign for what is in store for the next 10 weeks. I settled in my seat on the plane with full intention to optimize my 12 hours of not being able to move with some much needed sleep! Eight hours into the flight I am awake as if I had 5 cups of coffee. The excitement of the months ahead must have finally set in! The next 12 hours luckily were a bit of a blur. I landed in Tokyo, scrambled to catch my connecting flight, piled in the next plane with all the tourists going on vacation (boy, we are ... read more

The next time and only other time I had a day and a half off, I spent my time a little differently from climbing the volcano. I opted to check into a spa and be pampered, not only a spa, but one of the top in the world. My faithful companion, Robin was much more eager to join me this time. We kept with the healthy theme we'd been livng, but were so excited to have cooked vegetarian food, verses raw we have at the yoga retreat. We had massages, facials, delicious food and simply relaxed in the most gorgeous tropical setting. Here, I found a slice of heaven! ... read more

Somewhere between the time I left Gili Air and arrived in Ubud my mother managed to travel half way around the world, find me at my guesthouse, and join me in my adventures for the next two weeks. She is such a trooper. I’ve been debating for the past few weeks whether on not to include the next part of this blog or not. I reasoned in the end that this story does far more than show how poor my planning and scheduling skills were. It shows more than just an aloof backpacker who has been traveling for three months, blessed out on a beach for the past week, and therefore lost his sense of time, space, and the very important marriage of the two, time & space. It is a story that illustrates how strong ... read more

Sorry its been so long since i sent a blog but the place where i have been for the last 12 days has had pretty suspect internet as well as being very costly so i just decided to skip it until i got to a place that was much easier to send pics etc. But with all that I had a great time in the Gilis. I mostly stayed on the biggest one (Trawangan) the biggest and most geared toward backpackers/people who wanted to party (i.e Me!) and i made full use of all its facilities (i.e bars) Yes it has been a pretty hazy few days to say the least. I did get something other then getting drunk and dancing accomplished. The islands were really great for snorkeling and I pretty much did that on ... read more

Seriously, how do I always get myself into these things??!! This endeavor was the most physically challenging thing I have ever done and I will never, ever do it again!! I would not recommend this to another traveler unless they are into mountain climbing. I thought I was going on a sunrise hike with my new wonderful friend, Robin. Robin and I are picked up at midnight, so basically had to be up at 11:30 pm and we were only able to get in a couple hours of sleep to start off. We drive an hour and a half and arrive. We were like, What?! We're here and we're supposed to hike now? Our driver explains that this is best so that we make it to the top in time for sunrise. What time is sunrise? ... read more
