Day 9 Oct 9th
Kuta Beach
This morning we took off for Kuta Beach . This beach is world renownd for its white sand blue water and great waves. This also means another day of panic and teeth gnashing as we navigate the Balinese “bypass’ on the way up the coast. What the heck. We had our day of R and R. We can’t possibly be like all the other tourists and just lay by the pool or hang out at the puny resort owned beach.
Off we go and we got there without incident!
This is the Mission Beach of Bali. Scores of resorts and all the Western fast food you can imagine is offered. We wandered along trying to find the best place to camp when we heard a gringo voice. Two guys heard us talking and they struck up a conversation with us. They are friends that met at some techy corperation, they worked at. They hooked up for this trip in Bali. Both are Americans that live in Asia. The one works for Intel in Singapore the other in Korea. We sat on the beach with the other gringos, downed 2 large beers a piece and were
sliding into a groove. I must say I have drunk more beer than water on this trip. Their local beer is a Pilsner called Bintang, it is quite tasty. Even Peter who typically doesn’t drink beer has tilted back more beers than he thought he would on this trip.
We found a lounge chair and kicked back to rest. The water was full of surfers and the swimmers were sparse. Clearly this area is for the surf crowd. There were scores of boards leaning on every tree at the shoreline. Locals hung out waiting for an opportunity to sign up a gringo for surf lessons. Peter is not too anxious to get in the water. He wants his wounds to dry up so he stops oozing on his shirts. He has everyone asking him what happened and it is starting to get old. The locals ask you so many questions everyday, every where you go it’s comical. Peters arm is beginning to dry and it is starting to take on a new appearance. It is looking crusty and worse than it did when it was new. He looks like a diseased leaper but he won’t listen to me. I’ve wanted
to go to a pharmacy and buy an antibiotic cream but he refuses. I don’t think his arm is going to heal well using his idea of just letting it dry out, but he is like talking to a rock.
Peter walks along the beach collecting shells while I sleep. The weather here in Bali has been great except for heavy rain the first 2 days. Not too hot not too humid, the breeze blows constantly.
I was woken by Peter tapping me on the leg. It is late, later than we wanted. Tonight was the night we were going to go back to Jimbaran Bay for dinner. We can’t leave Bali without a dinner at Jimbaran, all the books say so.
I was angry the time slipped away from us today. If we stopped for dinner at Jimbaran there was no doubt we would be coming back in the dark on the bypass. That was one thing Peter and I talked about when we rented the scooter. Never drive the scooter in the dark. Always be sure to be where we need to be by dark. Peter talked me into staying and having dinner, but I was mad
at myself for thisWe had dinner and really enjoyed it. Peter and I split a grilled Red Ssnapper and jumbo prawns. The dinner came with salads, rice, baked potatoes and watermelon. It was a feast all for $22 USD! I tried not to think about the drive home at dinner.
The streets are dark and busy. We were told by locals to be careful of potholes and dogs. Dogs are one of the biggest causes of accidents. We drove slowly and made it back in one piece.
When we get back we return the scooter. Our time was up. I must admit there was a little relief.
While in town Peter was negotiating for a driver and I was getting my last foot massage in this area. All good things must end. We are off again tomorrow, but we’re not sure where we’ll land.
