Hi Everyone,
As some of you will know, Bronagh has arrived home safe and well and has started her new Teaching job. I’m am still in India for another few weeks and I have to say it is strange being here without her as we both were working very closely together at the Bible college. The students are missing her also. It’s coming near the end of the course so assignments are coming in and I’m starting to get a glimpse into the life of a teacher by marking, correcting and basically just trying to enforce deadlines (not an easy thing to do out here, there is such a laid back attitude).
As well as continuing the work at the Bible College I got the opportunity to visit the Little Hearts Orphanage female hostel. Its approximately 1.5 hours drive out of the city in quite a rural area. After turning off the main road we made our way through a maze of dirt roads which seemed lie driving through the jungle. We soon came on the hostel where approximately 20 mentally and physically disabled girls are cared for. They range from about the age of 15 to 60. The compound
Manual labour
Could you see this happening at home? is about 1 acre in size and over the past number of years they have build a dining hall, toilets a couple of hostels and they are currently putting the foundation in for a multipurpose hall. Watching the builders lay the foundation was an experience as it was all manual labour. No cement mixer, no wheel barrows, nothing. They carried the sand, stones and cement on their heard and threw it in a pile where someone then threw water over it, mixed it with a shovel and then they carried it off to the building site, I was tired just watching them. The laborers were probably only earning about £1.50/day.Although the cities are becoming more modern and westernised, It really is s a totally different way of life in rural India.
Just two nights ago I was able to treat the staff of the Little hearts orphanage to a meal. It was a real blessing for them for the hard work that they do with the disabled children and they deserve a good meal in a nice restaurant. Everyone had a good time and the food was good and spicy of course……I’m looking forward to a burger and chips
Two ladies.
These two mentally disabled ladies took me by the hand and wanted their photo taken with me. when I get home or a big fry…..put the pan on Bronagh!!!
In a couple of hours myself and a few others are getting the train for an overnight journey to go to a friends wedding. It is one of our class mates from last year. It will certainly be an experience for me, especially as will not be able to understand one word they are saying.
Thanks for keeping in touch with the blog and please do leave a short comment so I know there are actually people out there reading it. It is a great encouragement. Could I also ask you to pray for me for my final few weeks here, I want to have a big an impact on the lives of the people out here as possible and also I haven’t been sleeping very well for the past 3 nights. Only 3 hours sleep last night for some reason and it can be quite tiring out here with the heat etc at the best of times.
Hope to post another blog next week.
God bless
Stephen
