Once again I want to apologize for not writing in this more, where we stayed in Pune was great but not having an actual computer and not being acclimated yet really put a halt on blogging. So to begin where I left off, we woke up the next morning- still in the same clothes as three days earlier- and began the search for our luggage. Thankfully our driver showed up in the morning with a cell phone for our group so I was able to call the baggage lady in Delhi to see where our bags were- that is if they knew. Well I called and they still had no idea where our bags were- so Sarah and I went to the Desai Eye Hospital like we were supposed to be that day and let them ... read more

BANGKOK-KOLKATA-VARANASI-KHAJURAHO BE SURE TO VIEW ALL FOUR VIDEOS ABOVE Well its visa-run-time again. This together with Songkran celebrations coming up in Chiang Mai and a cheap Air Asia promotion to Kolkata, (Callcutta to us old-timers) bekoned a short jaunt to India. Air Asia can offer cheap flights but then they nickel and dime you with the extras (like check-in baggage / water). I brought only the allowable 7 kg carry-on and a laptop. The first time I went to India was on my way home from a year round-the-world sabattical in 1980. "Sabbatical" is a much better way of saying, "after a year of goofing off". And that time I also used Kolkata as a gateway to India. I've been there a few times since, the last time was in... read more

The rickshaw traveled around 1,600 km across three different Indian states to get to Calcutta (or Kolkota) on April 19. The traffic in Calcutta reminded us of why we were avoiding big cities, and was as bad as what we had experienced in Bangalore and Hyderabad. After having driven through almost 3,000 km through tough roads, cities and terrain, our rickshaw was not in the state to continue for the final 3 days that would ensure we reached Bombay in time for our flight to Australia. While we regretted stopping a little short of our target, we were glad that we were able to participate and experience the mayhem of Indian roads including both surprising acts of kindess and support from strangers as well as the craziness of people behind the wheel. Also, thanks to support ... read more

08.00 Hours Thursday 29 March. Up early to go to the mouth of the Hooghly River where it enters the Bay of Bengal. The Galaxy Guest house is run by 2 Sikh brothers and one of them Surinder is out side when I am going and he tells me that he is going home and will drop me at Sealdah station where I have to go to get the train. I jump on the back of his scooter but not before he insists on me putting a crash hat on that he has put a couple of serviettes into to stop my head getting dirty. We wiz through the streets of Kolkata and arrive at Sealdah station in double quick time. As it is so hot the pink paper in the crash hat has struck to ... read more

08.00 Hours Wednesday 28 March So here we are all alone in my last stop, Calcutta before I fly down to Cochin on Saturday. Feels a bit odd to be alone after all the companions of late So today I want to see the cricket ground Eden Gardens then take a ferry on the Hoogley River, take some photos of Howrah Bridge and go the famous flower market under the bridge. I set off early to try to beat the heat of the day. I walk to Eden Gardens but it’s difficult to get a good photo as the place is so big. I take the ferry across the river back to Howrah station where we arrived yesterday So I am out for 6 hours and it’s getting really hot so I head back only stopping ... read more

17.00 hours Monday 26 March Mira and I walk out of the back lanes of Varanasi to find a rick to the station. There is always a festival when you want to get to the railway station and today is no different. The traffic is appalling, but we make the station in plenty of time. We buy some stuff for the train and not long after the rush to get on board is on as the train pulls in. we find our berths and start to settle in and not long after Mira takes to her bunk. I stay awake for a couple of hours and then get a good nights sleep, only waking up due to the usual mobile phone , snoring and the chai man passing through the carriage. 08.00 Hours Tuesday 27 March ... read more

I was told today it was Friday, it’s a good thing I was told as had I been asked I would not have been able to give you an answer. I have genuinely completely lost track of what day of the week it is and what the date is because these things have simply become irrelevant. It is a truly liberating feeling to not have a single concern about two pieces of information which used to dictate my life and mood. Monday no longer means despair at a full week of work, Sunday no longer means the day to rest (or usually nurse a brutal hanover), Saturday no longer means party night. The only thing I keep a lose track of these days is the time and thats just so I know when to expect my ... read more

Namaste – and a disclaimer, this is not a blog entry for the squeamish as it involves death in a very real context! Varanasi – when I think of this place, I think of a city that embodies the Indian spirit to the utmost; the spiritual energy, the noise, the smells, the cows... it truly is a place that captures every essence of India in one place and displays it in all its glory. I was thrilled to go back there and experience everything all over again, bearing in mind of course that it may not be the same as when I was there last time, and of course it wasn't; nothing ever is the same twice. But it was equally as beautiful, moving and humbling as ever and I fell in love with the holy ... read more

India...at last! For some time, this country had been somewhat of a ‘forbidden fruit’ for Amy and I; a mirage on the horizon only to be viewed from afar but never satisfactorily experienced in any meaningful way. For quite some time, it has been at the head of our list of countries we would endeavour to visit; from its diversity of both landscape and culture to the taste of the food and the sheer sensual shock of what awaits; it has enticed and tormented in all manner of ways. Approximately ten months ago we were all set to go, to finally experience this land to which many a thought had wandered. As our passports will attest, our visas held all the official statements and signatures for our arrival from China. But, as those who have followed ... read more

Kolkata is definitley the place to land from what I've heard about the other main cities in India. There was no culture shock to any of the 20 something volunteers. The traffic isn't so crazy and the people are not in your face. The other volunteers of lattitude are all easy going and friendly and we became close during our orientation in Kolkata. We were fortunate enough to be in Kolkata at the time of the annual Bishop's college community fair, where each country of volunteers performed a piece to the locals. Obviously we kiwis were asked to do the haka, and because neither Imogen or Fiona knew it I did the Takapuna Grammar School haka as a one man force with the girls backing me up with shaking wrists. We visited the mother Teresa house ... read more
