Rameshwaram-Madurai-Kodaikanal: November-2022 Out of five major temples in the Southern India, we had visited two: Tirupati-Balaji and Kanniyakumari. We missed Padmanabhaswami temple in Thiruvanathapuram due to planning error. We have been to Ooty, Munnar and Thekkady hill stations of South India. Ooty with Bengaluru-Mysuru and Munnar – Thekkady as a part of Kerala tour. In this short tour of five days, we went to Rameshwaram (a Jyotirlinga and one of the Char Dhams of India), the famous Minaxi temple of Madurai and Kodaikanal hill station. Rameshwaram can be approached from Chennai or Madurai – almost the same distance. Kodaikanal can be approached from Madurai or Bengaluru. Clubbing Rameshwaram, Madurai and Kodaikanal thus make sense. Setting up itinerary for this trip was a bit tricky. Rameshwaram and Minaxi temple are very busy temples and the rush... read more

Rameshwaram – is a holy town located on Pamban island – and is separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel. It is just 40km from Mannar island, Sri Lanka. url=https://nishayogitraveller.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/0/5/130519575/pamban-bridge-rameshwaram_orig.jpgimg=https://nishayogitraveller.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/0/5/130519575/editor/pamban-bridge-rameshwaram.jpg?1587455994 When Ravana took Sita away to Sri Lanka, Lord Rama built the Ram Sethu bridge with Hanuman's help from here, across the sea to Lanka. Geological evidence suggests that the Rama Sethu was a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka. The bridge was 29km in length and the temple records note that it was completely above sea level until it broke in a cyclone in 1480 CE. Many other maps in Schwartzberg's historical atlas and other sources such as travel texts by Marco Polo call this ... read more

If you read the proposed itinerary at the start of the blog you would note we had plans to go to the Indian side of Adam's bridge. That's the point where back in the 15th century India and Sri Lanka were physically joined. These days there is a chain of sandy islands and treacherous sea currents. Spiritually it's a big pilgrimage site. Rama, incarnation of Vishnu led a group of monkeys and bears across a monkey built bridge to Sri Lanka and defeated the demon Ravana to rescue his wife, Sita. They returned to Rameswaram to offer thanks to Shiva. None of the above is the reason we are here but it is an important place for Indian devotees and is a small tourist mecca. For us it's the spot of our first photo, Indian looking ... read more

Like everyone else, I was dressed only the vesthy, ushered by the committee members for a quick holy dip at the Bengal Bay in the quaint little town of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. I choke as I got to swallow some sea water while taking the dip. I am the fairest of them all. All eyes stared at me, I felt awkward but I just kept going trying to shake the waters off me, kept myself dry. But not for long. Inside Rameswaram Temple, there are twenty wells. According to the Hindus, these wells contain holy waters to cleanse our sins. I wondered how thick my sins were as I walked in to get my first shower at the first Theertam (well). Each well I was showered with three buckets full of water. Imagine these, there were ... read more

... read more

This is my first post on Travel blog. And I would like to start it on a religious note, so I am writing my personal experience and feedback on my trip to Rameswaram which is one of the Char Dham place, also one of the twelve Jyotirlings, also known as Varanasi of south. Aug 31 , 2012 We have started our journey to Rameswaram from Chennai. After finishing our official work we plan to catch the night train which has two benefits for us. First No early rushing from office to catch evening 1700 hrs train and secondly to get chance to see an Engineering Marvel the longest Pamban bridge in the day time. So we catched the train (Rameswaram Express Train number 16701) at 2140 hrs from Chennai Egmore station. The train route was from ... read more

A journey to the sacred Rameswaram.. The land of Lord Rama.. It was an instant feeling that I thought of this trip. Was wondering how a pot of strong tea (thanks to Mrs Praveen for that) can inspire one to take quick decisions. So started of from Kochi a.k.a Ernakulam, Kerala in a deluxe 2x2 bus. KPN travels charged me Rs. 390/- to take me to Madurai, Tamil Nadu, where I would change for Rameswaram. Journey from Kochi to Madurai was an event-less, sleepy 8 hours as the moonless night enveloped the otherwise picturesque Palakkad and Pollachi. At the cost of a roll of Gold Flake and Rs. 30/- , a helpful auto-rickshaw took me to a Tours & Travels who operates sight-seeing trips to Rameswaram and Kanyakumari. I had to pay Rs. 300, after ... read more

One state transport bus connects Kanyakumari to Rameswaram and that follows a coastal route....locating and boarding that bus was bit painful as none was understanding me and vice versa... Landscape of Tamilnandu varies from banana, coconut, date vegetation to barren arid fields sometimes...sometimes i was crossing those bridges on back water ways and was able to get a glimpse of the ocean..sometimes i was witnessing sea salt production plant on road side...at times bus was stopping to some humid town stinking with stale fishes.....I had very difficulty in having lunch during those days as most of the restaurants were closed in the afternoon from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM... it was a whole day journey to rameswaram and was extremely tiring...scenic landscape was the only driving force in this famishing journey...finally the travel was folded to rameswaram...
