Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834Today we hired a car and driver who took us on a 'city tour' most of this was in 'New' Delhi but everything we saw was ancient - tombs, houses of worship etc. It was interesting to see the new part of the city. There is quite a difference. More cars, less bicycles, carts etc. People are clearly dressed for 'western' business. We visited some very interesting sites. Hamayan's tomb is called the red Taj Mahal and it is quite spectacular. The entire complex was built by Hamayan to house his family and very close friends - there are a total of 160 tombs in the complex. The gardens are being restored to his planned splendor and they must have been spectacular because they look pretty good now. Lots of water features, orchids, pomgranate plants etc. ... read more

Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834Staying in Old Dehli is definitely an assault on the senses but it is exciting and interesting and definitely not for everyone. We got here very late Wednesday night and got a good nights sleep. Spent all day Thursday 15th wandering around the area of the hotel.Tara Palace is off the main street - you have to walk down a narrow alley of cycle repair places to get to it. At night of course, these shops are all closed but during the day it is a very busy place. Bicycle parts are used for many forms of transport here.We walked all along Chandi Chowk, and many of the side streets/alley ways. This area of Old Dehli is like many market/shopping areas in ancient cities, each 'category' has it's own concentration of shops/stalls. So, you go ... read more

Today was interesting. They close everything down at 10PM here in the Tibetan colony. When I awoke, there were a couple of public announcements over the intercom in the street, one in Hindi then one in Tibetan. Everything was closed, and the gate in our building remained closed. I quickly learned it was an unofficial holiday commemorating the 22nd anniversary of His Holiness The Dalai Lama receiving the Nobel Piece Prize in 1998. There wasn't much to do, and I wasn't terribly adventurous to venture into New Delhi proper. There was no internet connectivity today in the building either. Fortunately, I'm able to tether my iPhone as a modem to my Macbook and iPad, so I had some connectivity. I found my way up to the roof and enjoyed a wonderful panoramic view of the Yamuna ... read more

Then we arrived in Delhi, the airport is much larger and we got through customs very quickly which made a good change. We only found the new metro station by asking as it wasn’t signed anywhere in the airport, it was very quick and cheap and cut the journey time down to 20 minutes from about 45. Due to time differences it was 8pm when we landed and 9.30pm when we got out at New Delhi. We then had to get across the train station in order to head towards our hostel area. OMG I had forgotten how totally mad India is!!!!!!!! We managed it though, a few false starts but eventually we found the security gate you have to go to get onto the platform areas, up and down and along staircases and walk ways ... read more

Friday was a casual day, just hung about at Manju Ka Tila. Felt fatigue from jet lag or time zone disparity (being 12.5 hours ahead of my system), so I took a nap then wondered about. The Tibetan settlement colony is back off the road, and isolated somewhat from the noise. Vehicle honking though is ubiquitous. They love their horns here. The skill of driving here is very impressive. I mean they don't think of terms of lanes, but more three dimensionally. I couldn't drive here with the controlled chaos. Interestingly, there's quite variety of multi-phonic horns that rival mobile phone ring tones. That prompted a business idea, development of a wider range of them. I sleep soundly here, and it may be exhaustion and jet lag. I was surprised by the amount of traffic that ... read more

I got back to my room around 5 this afternoon, and laid down to watch a cricket match on TV and dozed off. I woke up now 2.5 hours later, thought I'd only crash out for 20 minutes. My hotel is fantastic, they own other business including two FANTASTIC cafes here in the same building. I met a wonderful Tibetan merchant today, the first guy I met when I ventured out. He had me in his shop for tea, and gave me a Tibetan astrological reading. But he told me that I should go through the hotel staff for all my needs because they'll bend over backwards for me. I was going to take a NICE luxury state operated Volvo bus to Dharamsala next week. This guy said no, take one of the Tibetan operators private ... read more
