Indian railway history dates back more than 100 years when the British first introduced the steam train in 1853 between Bombay and Thana.
Since then Indian railways have come a long way. The vast network is divided and managed by 6 major dvisions such as Southern railway for south, Northeastern railway and so on. Almost all the nooks and corners of India can be reached by rail. For such a vast country that is a major achievement indeed.
On top of that India manufactures all its carriages and engines indegenously, nothing is imported. As a result Indian railways is the largest employer in the world have more than 1.6 million employees(1,600,000 people) ! That's a mind boggling stuff. Indians are appropriatly and extremely proud of their achievements.
Nowadays almost all the rail network runs either by electric power or diesel power. The engines are computerised and the carriages are very mordern comparable to any western rails with AC and reclining chairs. Railways hot food cattering will provide you with lovely food on demand.
This museum is a celebration of the mammoth Indian railways steam engines that are long gone. They have restored many of the old engines
to its former glory and displayed it magnificently. There is a small toy train takes you in circle to give you a great introduction of things to see and ponder.
The two world heritage mountain railways - Himalyan Darjeeling railway and Nilgiris mountain railway are the jewel of the museum and have been duly displayed wonderfully.
You will need about 1 hour at-least to visit it. If you get a chance please do.
Please look at the self explanatory photos.
