Delhi
Diwali preparation at the Delhi bazar After 4 days we were happy to leave spiritual Varansi. Our guesthause there was right at the river Ganga, which was of course nice because of the views. On the other hand we were right in the middle of everything 24/7 - the ceremonies, the music, the bells ringing all the time, the singing etc. We woke up with these sounds in front of our window and we went to bed with them. We had enough! The night train to Delhi was really comfortable. You get food and bedding and you can really have a good night sleep at the same time as travelling.
Unfortunately we both got sick in Varanasi - seriously ill so that we had to take antibiotics. We cannot recall what caused it but apparently many travellers get ill in Varanasi because the water is so dirty. I was better after a day but Martin had to get on the train although he still had high fever, which was really exhausting for him.
We reached Delhi in the morning of the 27th October and first thing was to get to the guesthouse we had pre-booked to get Martin back into bed to get well. Unfortunately they
Delhi
Old Delhi from above did not tell us on the phone when we booked that the house untergoes renovation works at the moment. The whole place was one big construction side. The block of 6 rooms, one of which we stayed in, had the only walls still being intact. Anyway - as it was main festival time of Diwali, which is the biggest festival of the year for hindus, we did not have many alternatives as the city was fully booked. It was only for 2 nights - so we stayed.
Martin recovered slowly but steadily thanks to the right drugs so that we still had the chance to see a lot in Delhi. It is not a city you would go for a stroll as a tourist (at least we did not feel like it). The different parts of it - Old Delhi and New Delhi with its various quarters - are spread over a huge area and are quite dispersed. It feels like they do not really belong together and each part forms its own entity.
However, there are lots of sights to see, which, as such, are really worth visiting, such as the stunning Jama Masjid mosque, the fort and

Inside the Red Fort - a beautiful white marble palace the bazaar in Old Delhi, the Gandi memorial by the river and the Humayun's tombs - a former king . We spent a lot of money on rickshaws to get from one place to another but we really enjoyed the 2 days in Delhi - although 2-3 days are really enough in our mind.
With the Diwali festival taking place right at the time of our stay in Delhi the city was beautifully decorated and fireworks were going on all day and night throughout the city. The bazaar was full of Diwali shoppers as you usualy give gifts to your family and friends. Every shop and many houses were decorated with flowers, lights and candles as Diwali is also called the festival of lights.

Raj Ghat - the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi war ueberraschend komfortabel.

Jeder Teil wirkt eher eigenstaendig.
