December 29th 5:30am Enough about airplanes and hot Korean stewardesses, I'm here. In Mumbai/Bombay. To give the low down on the whole Mumbai/Bombay thing. Bombay was the name that the English gave this city when they ruled here which ended a few years back. Anyway, the Indians brought back the original name of Mumbai, but after calling a city Bombay for 150 years, it will take some time to get used to it. It's similar to how Peking is now known as Beijing. Now, Peking, after a generation or two is left to being known with duck. I'm sitting here in the airport waiting for our bags to come out. We've been here since 4:00am waiting and hoping our driver is still outside, waiting for us with the fabulous words, ERIC BRAM written on his placard. ... read more

12-29 7:30 am Just something interesting I found out about India. Drugs are really treated harshly here with marijuana getting you 10 years in jail. Ever see, Midnight Express??? I find this strange since most of the really good pot that I have ever tried seemed to come from India (i never inhaled). I mean where did the hukka pipe originate from? India, that's where. This is a country of hypocrisies but it's such an amazing place. Don't worry, I'm not going to stay here, but I see why people have. I've been trying to get to sleep, but for some reason I can't get Eminem's "Guess Who's Back" out of my head. 12-29 9:17pm I feel a lot more comfortable now. I was a bit homesick due to lack of sleep, crappy bed, and utter ... read more

We returned to Mumbai, our Indian hometown, at 7am, Sunday, March 12. I was a little the worst for wear, because I had been in and out of my bunk bed on the train all night, tending a tender tummy. In the circumstance, we climbed off the train from Ahmedabad and fell unwittingly into the greedy grasp of a scoundrel tout. He escorted us to a taxi, loaded us into it, joined us on the ride to our hotel; and opened conversation with the tit-bit, that the ride to our hotel was going to cost 540 rupees. From our previous Mumbai visit, we knew this was nine times the going rate. Of course, the tout did not know we knew this. So, first Penny, and then I, made clear to him that 540 rupees was not ... read more

12-30 I can't get over the fact that there are more people in India than I've ever seen and most of them seem to be walking. Indian people just walk. It's kind of like when you're on the freeway in a traffic jam and you wonder just where the hell are all of these people going. It's kind of like that. It's strange because with all of these people of all different types of faiths and beliefs, you'd expect there to be more feelings of racial tension, but I don't feel it. In L.A. I feel it, here I don't. But then again, I know that there are tensions between the Muslims and the Hindis as told to me by Vikram. He told me that there were riots in Bombay because there is a temple that ... read more

1-1-2006 8:35pm Happy new year. Had a great time last night at the Grand Hyatt with other rich people. It was $50 a plate for the New Years which is a lot when you consider that you’re in India. The food was great, but when you think of the poverty just outside the hotel gates, you can’t help but feeling a little guilty. It makes me think of the Academy Awards and thinking that if I was ever nominated for an award, I’d want to wear jeans and a t-shirt and donate whatever my tux would have cost to charity or something. In actuality, I probably wouldn’t do that, but until I actually get nominated for an award, it’s easy for me to be on my self-righteous soap-box. It was only my second birthday away from ... read more

The first day of the Wedding ceremony was today. There are three parts/days to a traditional Indian wedding. Today was the Mendhi ceremony, tomorrow is the Wedding Ceremony, and the next day is the Party. The Mendhi ceremony if mostly all about the women. They get henna tattoos on their hands while the men stand around holding purses, drinks, and taking pictures. Speaking of taking pictures, since Vikram is a celebrity here, there was some paparazzi here and I felt really bad because they kept interviewing me about my Best Buy commercial which I felt was extremely inappropriate since it was Vikram and Melanie’s day, but you can’t control the media. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, real events. Vikram got a little bit of henna on his hand as well, but Melanie looks like she ... read more

I woke up to thunder yesterday morning. Thunder followed by rain pelting down on the roof: a sound that brought my roommate Alisha back to bed and sent me into a deep and calm slumber. With my eyes closed, I could almost imagine that I was sleeping in my room back home in Hawai'i. Maybe it's because I grew up in a rainy valley, maybe it's because the rain seemed to wash away a lot of the filth of the city, but either way, walking outside yesterday was almost refreshing. The smell of the rain covered the normal stench of the streets down here in Colaba (south Bombay, like the Waikiki of Bombay, really) and made things feel fresh. For a few seconds, it seemed like the rain had covered the noises too. That is, until ... read more

The Wedding Ceremony: Oh wait, before the wedding ceremony. I forgot to say what also happened at the Gateway To India... Gateway to India: A "holy man" dressed in robes grabbed my wrist and tied yellow and red strings around them. He then blessed me. I thought it was pretty cool and said Namaste (thank you) to the guy. But nothing is free in India so he asked for a donation and shot him a ten. Later, in the shower, my religious strings bled and I had to throw them away. It looked like psycho in the shower as my blessings went down the drain... back to... The Wedding Ceremony: This is what I wore my traditional Indian dress for. Yes, the Kaftan, scarf, and shoes. The whole nine yards. Danielle didn't wear a sari (because ... read more

...was not danced at Melanie's and Vikram's wedding celebration which was the day after the ceremony. I'd describe the party in detail, but it was like pretty much every western wedding. So if you attended a wedding reception recently, it was close to the same thing. Good food, drinks, appetizers, music, and people dressed in fancy clothes. There were some minor differences... LIKE WE WERE IN INDIA AND YOU WEREN'T! Food: The food, like all the food we've had was incredible. Waiters would walk around with appetizers and the big problem was that I loved the appetizers so much, that I wouldn't have room for the regular food. So during the three day wedding, I've kept my drinking to a minimum so I'd have more room for food. Some men think about sex every 10 seconds ... read more
