Hariom was waiting downstairs for us at 10.00am as arranged, today we’re heading to Gwalior Fort. The fort complex includes several temples, palaces and water tanks. The palaces here include Man Singh Palace, the Gujari Mahal, the Jahangir Mahal, the Shah Jahan Mahal and the Karan Mahal. The fort lies on an area of three square kilometres on a huge hill in the centre of Gwalior, and has two entrance gates. The pedestrian entrance is called the Elephant Gate (Hathi Pul) with a long winding ramp leading up from the city, and the western approach for vehicles has two gates, one called Urwai Gate and the other called Badalgarh Gate. Much of the fort is occupied by the prestigious private Scindia School for Indian nobility, so is off limits for visitors. We approached the ticket office ... read more

Gwalior is a historic city situated in Madhya Pradesh, south of Agra. It’s a cultural, industrial, and political centre and takes its name from Gwalior Fort, the historic rock fortress that forms the centre of the city. Gwalior is famous for this dramatic and dominant Hindu fort, which is situated atop a plateau nearly 3 km long that rises a sheer 90 metres from the plain, and is surrounded by the city on all sides. The fort has existed at least since the 10th century, and the inscriptions and monuments found within what is now the fort campus indicate that it may have existed as early as the beginning of the 6th century. The fortress contains several tanks (reservoirs), six elaborately carved palaces, six temples, a mosque, and several other buildings. Mughal emperor Babur reputedly described ... read more

The alarm call came through at 5am.The plan is to meet our guide for The Taj Mahal around 535am spend 2 hours there, back to hotel for breakfast and off to Gwalior at 11am. The Taj is incredible. ..around 40 to 50000 people visit everyday and we were in the first 50 to go through the strict security entry. A great time of the day to go as cooler and less people. As our guide explained the whole thing is not just about the building but the love story behind it. It was built by a Mughal king for his young wife who died after bearing their 14th child. However the building is incredible ..beautiful translucent but non porous marble it has never been cleaned is full of inlaid precious and semi precious stones. In the ... read more

Gwalior & Orchha - 24 November 2015 After breakfast we departed for Orchha (240kms). But first we drove for 3 hours to get to Gwalior which was on the way. Except for 15 minutes, the road was one of the worst we had driven on in India….and we have had some beauties. Pot holes and speed bumps were constant. Dispite all, Ravi stayed calm and patient and got us to the Gwalior fort, which is perched majestically on top of a 3km-long plateau overlooking the city. This fort is known for its Rajput & Mughal style of architecture. It is an 8th century fort with eye-catching circular towers with the dominating one of the Man Singh Palace ringed with turquoise tiles. Much of the fort is now occupied by the prestigious Scindia School which was established ... read more

I was visiting Gwalior for the second time - the first visit was actually hilarious. This was about 2 years back when my parents were excited to get me married. I met my first alliance then. Well, this time the visit was planned as my parents had shifted to this city. One day before the trip, i started preparing my itinerary, Gwalior fort and Saas-bahu temple being my top priority. My first halt was Delhi - which was chilling on the New Year's Eve. From the nation's capital I boarded a train to Gwalior. It was night by the time I reached my destination. My second day started with a layer of deep fog all over - we were struggling to even get out of the blankets. We somehow managed to get of our place by ... read more

Madhya Pradesh beckons…the heart of incredible India! On a longish weekend, we set out from New Delhi to the hitherto unexplored Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh (MP). A 50-minute ATR flight from Delhi's swanky airport terminal, T-3 brought us to the dusty, dreary city of Gwalior leaving us breathless as we savoured the sights and stories of its royal past. Thanks to the net, we had booked ourselves in the hotel, Tansen Residency, a mid-budget property owned by MP Tourism located on Mahatma Gandhi Road quite close to the railway station. The hotel offers 12 AC deluxe suites and 24 double-bed accommodations. The AC room with attached toilet allotted to us was quite spacious facing a well manicured garden of the hotel. MP Tourism scores much better than the average state-run tourist lodges especially for their ... read more

Gwalior wasn’t a stop that planned on making, however it was either stop here, or endure a 22 hour sleeper train… in the end our decision was easy. We only booked one night into a place close to the station, however due to train timings, we would actually be in Gwalior for closer to 2 days, so we decided to try at least see some of it whilst we were there. Before talking about what we actually did here, I think its worth mentioning that the fairly low key, humble hotel we stayed in – Hotel Grace, was fantastic. For a budget hotel, these guys went above and beyond to help make our short time there as easy as possible arranging drop offs, hailing Tuk tuks, providing us with Colgate toothpaste, and even letting have a ... read more

My last night in Agra was like the first: loud, mostly sleepless, power outage, hot and humid. Glad to leave and discover new things. Again the Shatabdi Express in the morning. Destination Gwalior. I had a nice seat in a well-ACed car. I got distracted from my reading by the sudden change in landscape. The usual rice fields had given way to a hilly succesion of gorges and valleys with peaks distrubed only on the horizon by brick-oven smokestacks. It was like a 1:1000 scale model of the Himalayas. It was carpeted here and there by fields that could only be harvested by hand. A little hut here, a cow there and the wilderness in between. Your first impression of a city over here happens when you're assaulted by rickshaw drivers at the station. Also, it ... read more

We left for Gwalior on morning of 28th may. Reached there at around 4pm. After meeting the relatives, we went to the hotel, where I took a long nap. In the evening we left for the marriage and by the time we reached there, the “barat” had already left the house. I joined my relatives in the dance. There were two of my cousins along with 2 nephews and one niece. We all belonged to the same age group. I and Akshat Bhaiya, danced madly and continued dancing even after reaching the place for marriage. We were all sweat and ran for water. After the “Jaymala” I realized that I am going to get bore here. Another cousin of mine (Shekhoo) came up with an idea of going for a movie. The plan involved my Dad, ... read more
