Good Afternoon People, Where you last left us the intrepid explorer was deep in the hills of the Western Ghats trying to hunt down the elusive... 'cold beer in a bar in India' Ha you thought I was going to say something hopelessly romantic and escapist didn't you? Well no, as it turns out I am partial to the odd beer so when I met a fellow countryman by the name of Richie over noodles on the main bazzar in Munnar (a rhyme!) we decided to head to the only bar in the local area. What he didn't tell me is he was traveling around India on a Royal Enfield Bullet. For those of you in the dark the bullet is an icon of Indian transportation; the bike was originally a British design that that was ... read more

Lake Periyar - Monday 9 to Wednesday 11 November Monday’s journey from Munnar took us first to the internet café in the town to upload my latest blog and to check e-mail, then onto a winding road through the tea plantations. The weather was fine at first - we even saw some blue sky for the first time in days - but, as tea gave way to cardamom plantations, the cloud returned and down came the rain. For the next three hours, the rain continued on and off (actually more on than off) and our movement along the road was hampered by landslides and fallen trees as a result of the recent heavy rain and high winds. By the time we arrived at Kumily, it was pouring. Despite what The Hindu newspaper says, everyone seems to ... read more

18 March Up at 5:45, dazed and confused, and puttered to Periyar National Park. Our driver said he’d seen tigers crossing the road some evenings - but sightings are very rare. We did notice a deer sleeping peacefully on our way in. We arrived at daybreak. An English couple, two avid ornithologists, joined us. Our trek started with a view of the dense cloud rising from a bottomless pot of mist into a South Indian jungle. We saw loads of Great Indian hornbill, kingfishers - both brown and the regular blue sort. At dawn, a strange migration of a billion frogs all come from the lake and hop to the cool that the forest gives. David Attenborough, eat your heart out. We spied two birds of paradise with plumes extending beyond their tails; one was a ... read more

Our varied modes of transport in India, from the sublime to the ridiculous... I've just been looking back on all the ways we have travelled in this amazing country since we arrived on January 4. We arrived in Chennai via India Air, thankfully an uneventful experience. Then things began to get interesting, starting with the bus driven by a Tamil who awed all aboard with both his driving skill, and his countless close calls with oncoming buses, trucks, rickshaws, cows, motorcycles, and cars, all of which can be found in any lane at any time. How he managed to avoid a collision was a constant source of incredulity. Yet, nobody on the tour was able to relax because of the seemingly insane driving by all. It seems that the size of the vehicle determines how ... read more

Viewing elephants, wild boar, water buffalo and gazillions of birds We left Madurai on Saturday morning, hiring a car to take us from the big city to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and tiger preserve. The drive is about 4 hours, and takes us from the coconut palms and rice paddies of the state of Tamil Nadu into the Western Ghat Mountains in the state of Kerala. The preserve is a "hill station" run by the state. The city, Thekkadi, adjoining it has some nice tourist accommodations on the outer fringe. We took a boat ride yesterday on Lake Periyar and were lucky enough to see elephants near the shore, along with water buffalo, huge deer, and lots of birds, especially cormorants. We are staying in a small pension, run by a local family. Our room overlooks ... read more

About 2 months ago, I read about the Periyar Tiger Trail, a 3-day hiking & camping excursion in Periyar Tiger Reserve, a sustainable eco-tourism venture run by the state forest department. They have employed former poachers to guide treks, which provides income for the park, decent employment for the poachers and a few other locals, a way for tourists to get deep out into the Indian wilderness (a real challenge to do here, even more so for a western woman traveling alone), and a way to monitor the park for other poachers. As soon as I read about the trip, I tried to email and make a reservation, but the email bounced back and I didn’t follow up, thinking I’d just figure it out when I got here. So as soon as I arrived, backpack still ... read more

Our time in south east India came to an end with a lazy day in Kanyakumari, right at the southern tip of the continent. The seaside town was geared towards homegrown tourism and the street hawkers were much more interested in the groups of Indian tourists than us. Teenage boys lapped up the funky sunglasses on offer, whist families played in the sea, with the women splashing in the shallows in full sari. Then in complete contrast we headed up the south west coast to Varkla. This cliff-top town was almost completely dominated by us Westerners, with banana pancakes aplenty. The beaches kept us entertain during the day. Its was so nice to sit out in the sun and dip into the warm sea when the heat got to much. Once the evening draw in we ... read more

Very early start up at 5.30am this morning - but definitely worth it. Went up to Periyar National Park just 5m away by auto rickshaw and set off around 6.45/7am on our jungle walk after first putting on our leech socks. The 3 hour walk began by crossing the man made lake on a raft that is pulled by rope from one side to the other and then setting off on foot into the jungle with our guide at the front and Chandra at the back. We stayed up front the majority of the time which turned out to be very beneficial as often shortly after our guide had spotted something it would dash off so only those at the front would have seen. This happened with a mouse deer that was hiding in a hollow ... read more

Had a traditional Kerala breakfast of rice noodles and chickpeas (which we were informed is a balance of carb and protein) before leaving on the boat. We sailed for about 3 hours through the backwaters amongst the wildlife including buffalo out for a swim and trying to graze on the weeds at the side. Was really nice just sitting chilled out listening to Sigur Ros, almost like something out of Planet Earth. Stopped off at the Toddy Parlour to taste the local toddy - an alcoholic drink made from coconut milk. This smelled really bad and didn't taste much better, but we did get some very tasty spicy prawns for only INR 25. We then continued on our way, passing a bridge that had to be hand lifted and so the boat man just shouted at ... read more

We left the cool hills Kerela and went down into the steamy flatlands of Tamil Nadu. The weather went from 20C to about 35C in less than an hour. The state of Tamil Nadu has an incredible number of temples. Big ones small ones, some in huge complexes and some just a few feet high on the side of the road. We had a major culture shock in Madurai. It was big, overpopulated and grim. If it didn't have 2 fabulous temples, we would have avoided it completely. Our first disapointment in India. Luckily the next day we traveled north to Trichy. A lovely city that gave us back our enthusiasm. Tomorrow it's on to Pondicherry, the old French territory on the Bay of Bengal. ... read more
