We started the day early 7:00am with a bike ride around the island. The bikes today were much better than yesterday. The countryside here is just so beautiful and the people are so nice. Everyone in India (where we have been) dresses so colorful. I just love the colors. We bike to an old temple built about 500 years ago. Everyone says hello and waves. We start stopping along the route and take pictures with locals. They seemed thrilled that we want their pictures. We even saw this older gentleman with this pole we thought he was using to knock down coconuts. Instead, he climbed it like a ladder and then climbed the rest of the tree and cut down the coconuts. It was cool. We bike for about 2 hours, then head back for breakfast. ... read more

We started the day trying to find bikes. They were supposed to be on the next street but that was closed. A cab driver saw us walking around lost and we told he what we wanted. He drove us to several places before we found a place to rent them. I cost us about $2 us to rent them. Off we went to go see the Chinese Fishing nets. We get there and see the boats and the fish. One of the nets groups invited us on board and let us work the net. You pull on the ropes and the counter balance helps raise the nets. It was fun. We continued on biking. Man am I out of shape, the bike is hard to ride and bumpy too. We go a little farther and the ... read more

Markus took his flight back to Europe and left me alone in Aleppey. For all those who are following our blogs since a while, you will probably know that I had 3 difficult abdominal operations in 2012. So my one and only reason to come to Aleppey was a 21 day ayurvedic panchakarma treatment. I wanted to reduce the toxines in my body and to get back on track (I still had a lot of problems). And as some ayurveda councelling in Switzerland had helped me a lot, I wanted to go through this programme. I arrived with mixed feelings in the Sreekrishna Ayurveda Center in Aleppey, to be honest. Well, knowing that this has nothing to do with wellness, I was actually really scared. How will I feel (you hear those horrible stories of people ... read more

We left the Periya Hotel at about 0700 loading ourselves, and having our gear loaded into 7 seater Chevs. We climbed for a while in Eastern Kerala and apparently we reached something like 700 m. The landscape became lush again and opened out into tea plantations. Quite steep mountains and ravines with the high points often occupied by a church or church school - sounds a bit like Brisbane! We saw Fraciscans, Jesuits, Lutherans and Adventists. At the top of our climb we stopped at a large church that had been built by the locals, apparently more or less under conditions of slavery during the English time. Quite a simply decorated church with the symbols we have come to recognise in Southern India, for example a metal cross on top of the steeple incorporating a large ... read more

After travelling from Fort Kochi, ( Antony our driver pointed out a cashew nut tree on the way) we arrived at Alleppey to board our rather charming houseboat with a driver, Joseph, a chef and a crewman. They were friendly and provided delicious meals including cooking up some giant blue legged prawns we purchased from the fish merchants on the way. They were yum!!! We cruised among the many waterways and out into the the Vembanad Lake. The area is known as the Backwaters and stretches for 1900km. It was totally idyllic and very restful cruising through the waters with many other houseboats, but no one got in anyone's way. It was tranquil and quiet except for the occasional burst of noise from a boat load of Indian men dancing and singing. They were pretty happy. ... read more

Review of Panaromic Sea Resort, Alappuzha This hotel is located just across the road from Alappuzha beach. It was a pleasant and relaxing stay at this property. It was our honeymoon and we found it very comfortable. Rooms are spacious and clean. Inclusive buffet breakfast was good. Tea maker and fridge in the room was useful. I took a garden view room & it was great. We spent a night over there. The food was fine. Staff is courteous and well behaved. It is located exactly beside the beach and you can go on the beach at night after dinner as well. But I’d suggest people to better go for an overnight stay at a lake resort as sea in alappuzha is not great & very calm. It doesn’t give you the feel of a beach ... read more

On the 17th, we took an hour and a half long public bus ride from Kochi to the nearby backwater town of Alappuzha (aka Alleppey). We walked the short distance from the bus station to our guesthouse, the Palmy Residency, got settled in, grabbed some lunch, and signed up for a canal tour. Since we planned to only spend one night in Alappuzha, we attempted to check online for tickets for the night train to Madurai departing the following evening. When this proved unsuccessful, we took a rickshaw to the train station, where we found out the reservation office was closed. We decided we had no other choice but to wing it the next morning and hope there were taktal tickets (pricier, last minute tickets) available. We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing, then went ... read more

As our month in India draws to an end we cannot believe how quickly the time has passed but we are looking forward to the antipodean leg of our journey. On the 10th we fly from Kochi to Singapore via Chennai (Madras) and we are looking forward to staying with friends from Much Wenlock, Bill and Astrid, for two days until we carry on to Adelaide. Our Indian road trip around Rajastan was followed by a short visit to Amritsar before we flew south to Kerala. At Fort Cochin we found a small town with aspects that appeal to travellers like internet cafe, bookshops, rooftop restaurants and giftshops for me to browse! There we discovered India's first Biennale, a modern art exhibition and a cultural centre where we watched the traditional theatrical dance called Kathikalli. We ... read more

So we travelled south to Alleppey on Sunday and commuted on our first bus which was a great experience, it was over loaded completely and we were the only tourists on it so it was intimidating to begin with but really cool. There was a young boy who had no space at all so he sat on my lap and all the indians were smiling, it was cool. We arrived and got an amazing homestay called the Lemon Dew,a few young lads like mid twenties were running it and it had a very rasta feel to it so I felt right at home. It had an open top area on the roof where everyone had a few beers and a good oul social chat every night and it was great to get info about other places ... read more

Alleppy, I’ve found and lost my heart here, I’ve experienced extreme pleasure and extreme pain, yet unlike returning to paradice which I learnt a few years ago was not a good idea, returning home is. Sujit was waiting at the train station to collect us and take us to Mandala, they had kept aside my favourite room for me, the bamboo hut, that first night, I had a beer on the beautiful lonely beach and slept on the comphyest mattress i'd experienced in India. Absolute bliss. So I first rocked up here in 2010 when a really kind smiling boy approached Daniela and I at the train station, I then returned a few days later with Matthias, then after my first stay in the Ashram I took Fiona and her 3 American girlfriends, I then met ... read more
