And so began our intimate relationship with India's bus system. In the span of 24 hours, we took 4 buses, from Aurganbad to Shopal to Bijapur to Bangklok to Badami. Total bus time? I think a conservative estimate would be 17 hours, as we spent about 5 hours in Bijapur in between buses. You'd think I would be complaining, but there is no room for complaining in India. "Indians...we're relaxed cool dudes, man!" And besides, the bus offered some of the best experiences to date - like being double bounced 3 feet into the air. Bijapur With time to kill in between buses, we decided to tour around Bijapur, most notably the Golgumbaz and Ibrahim Rouza. More interestingly, however, it was also at this time we finally started noticing the 'Indian head wave'. Sort of a ... read more

On our way to Badami we had to switch busses twice. On our second transfer we were in Bijapur and with a few hours to kill we took a rickshaw for a tour of the city to see some cool sights. Our driver spoke no English, out of all the drivers at the bus stop that did, we somehow ended up with the one that didn't. He just sat there, drove and when asked anything wobbled his head, identical to a bobble head car ornament. This, according to the Lonely Planet, can mean yes, no, maybe or something else in India. We stopped at some tombs where we had to take our shoes off (quite normal for any temple in India), walk clockwise around the tombs, rub smoke on our face and ashes on our neck. ... read more

Only 125km away from Hampi and more than 6 hours ( and a couple of buses later)on the way to reach this little town in the middle of Karnataka. Pigs searching for some nice garbage, horses, donkeys, chicken, beggars, oh oh what a chaos! I like this town, although it ireally dirty and easily a source of diseases. The room that we rent was so hot that even my sheet was warmed up! sleeping was horrible! Badami was once the capital of the Chalukya empire, which covered much of the central Deccan between the 4th and 8th centuries. The area around Badami is dripping with temples and there are over 150 in the three main centres alone ( Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal) Badami is best known for its beautiful cave temples, although I enjoyed the forts ... read more

We had some problems finding out how to get to our next destination, in Hampi they just tried to sell us a taxi ride at a high price. We took the local bus to Hospet, trying to catch a train at 9:00 am that we had read about somewhere. Still, the idea of a taxi and a chauffeur quite intrigued us, we had some time left, so Stephan went to look for the taxi stand, which is usually close to the bus stand. He actually found what we wanted, in the end it was 30% cheaper than the arrangements in Hampi, which is only 12 km away. We used an old white ambassador car, with seating benches for the driver and the passengers. Like in a movie of the 1950s! From Badami we would have had ... read more
