So I am now well and truly ensconced with Lobsang, Tensing and Sarah and being thoroughly spoilt. Lobsang won’t let me do a thing. He washes my clothes - I have had to hide my undies, makes my bed in the morning and puts shoes on my feet if I walk about on the concrete veranda. He and Tensing are both great cooks too and the food is Tibetan and wonderful. Tibetans must be the most wonderful people in the world, I can’t believe that things have turned out so well. I share a room with Sarah at present, which is no problem. She is 28, comes from England originally but now lives in Australia, so we have a fare bit in common. She leaves on Saturday so then I have the room to myself. Both ... read more

The bus journeys were not to horrendous, well not compared to the Nepal to India trip anyway. It was a bit galling though having to get a bus to Pathenkot (3hrs) when only yesterday I had lobbed past in the train! Then at the bus station I managed to find a bus to Kanga (4hrs), change there and get and get a bus to Dharamsala. Then I caught a taxi to McLeod Ganj. I already knew where I wanted to stay. I had sourced a little guesthouse ran by Tibetan monks called the Loseling. The taxi driver had to ask a few people along the way but eventually after me paying him more to carry my case up the long flight of wet stairs, there I was. Although I must have got the name wrong ... read more

My last night in Kathmandu. I decided that for my last night in Kathmandu that I would take Raju, his wife and his two lovely children to dinner. It was something simple as I didn’t want them to feel uncomfortable. Raju’s mother was visiting from the village so she came too. To Get to Kathmandu she has to walk three hours up hill and then get a bus for 1 hour. I have been asked to visit them next time I am in Nepal, but am I up to it? Raju said that his wife and mother had never been to a restaurant before. We ordered drinks and then they took half the menus away and I said to leave them. Then Pete whispered to me that Mum and grandmother wouldn’t be able to read anyway. ... read more

Hello those of you still finding time to track my endless movements! I am writing to you from the home of the Dalai Lama...Dharamsala up in the picturesque mountains! I have covered quite a lot of ground since my last entry which has meant some serious train journies. Being in confined spaces has induced some interesting and amusing situations largely due to our train delirum, or as we like to say...going "insane in the train brain!". Sally and i have now managed to tally up 15 train journies! Most of which we have treated ourselves to the luxury of 3rd AC(carriages with air conditioning and pillows and blankets for bed time!) However to make it down to chennai from kerala we and the other gappers endured a 12hour-ish journey in sleeper class. Now, no air-conditioning, plus ... read more

Hmmm travel blog travel blog what to write! Well, so. I left Delhi! Earlier than planed I know, but then again if I had planned a bit better I wouldn't rock up there in the hottest season. It was too much for me to bare. To hot to do much. Couldn't really explore because it was far to uncomfortable to be outside. So it meant I was working in the air conditioned rooms or sitting under a fan somewhere else. Any outside activities where greatly avoided. So, some what depressive really. Amelie and I decided to finish all our on going projects with the organisation and bust a groove up to the mountains. Ahhh the mountains. Where bliss always resides in my soul........... Well something like that anyways. I think when I am in the mountains, ... read more

Ah so it has been a while I know, but I have been doing a lot and haven't had the motivation to write it all down yet. But I am here in Nepal now, and have walked for 20 minutes to find an internet that doesn't charge you diamonds to use it so I figure now is as good a time as ever. So... I left Delhi at the end of April. I said goodbye to a new but dearly loved friend, and to an amazing adventure. I strapped on my pack and the memories that I would now be carrying alone again. The load felt a lot heavier. But after a 13 hour bus ride, including 1 flat tire, and a physical altercation between a passenger and one of the guys working on the bus, ... read more

27-29 March. After a brutal, 6+ hour ride over hilly and twisty roads on a local bus without leg room even for me, we reached Dharamsala, home of thousands of refugees from Tibet and especially the Dalai Lama, who fled the Communist Chinese government in March 1959. India has allowed the Dalai Lama to set up a government in exile here and has supported his efforts to win freedom for Tibet for the past 50 years. You might remember that the freedom of Tibet was an issue as China prepared for the 2008 Olympics and ran the torch through Europe and the US. Dharamsala is built up steep hills in three sections, the second of which is called McLeod Ganj. We stayed in the top section, Baghsu, and had just reached the hotel when it started ... read more

A sunny Sunday morning and my last day off in my yoga teacher training before I complete the course next weekend... I have just been for a massage that involved having Tibetan singing bowls placed on each chakra and hot herbal compresses on all my joints which was pretty blissful after 3 weeks of an average of four hours of yoga a day. My body feels pretty thankful for some attention. After a somewhat iffy start involving doing my back in during what I think was the first yoga session of the course (guessing that the lawnmover relatde back injury on Waiheke hadn't healed properly) and spending the first week unable to participate properly and getting pretty wound up and dissapointed I feel pretty good right now. I do know that my body does not really ... read more

As some of you will have noticed, there hasnt been any blogs for a while - whilst on an Indian train writing a blog my charger blew-up due to the rather dodgy plug and voltage on the train - not surprising really. Surprisingly there wasnt an apple shop either in Delhi or in any of the other places we were passing through so we had to wait until Singapore to get a replacement charger. Himalayas When we last wrote we had just finished Rajisthan and were heading up to the mountains to the Tibetan town of McLeod Ganj. We planned to spend a few days there but ended up staying for about 10. Whilst still part of India, the town is home to thousands of Tibetan refugees including the Dali Lama himself! The people were so ... read more

So at last I get to it, it has taken a long time, after months of joining this blogspot and having read hundereds of blogs, I eventually convince myself to write one for myself too....so without further due, here is an account of my last jaunt, well, it wasnt really supposed to be a jaunt, it was a full on high gear trek to a mountain pass and some lakes, but given the status quo, we settled for a jaunt..... Though we started out on Thursday itself but missed the bus we were looking for, which cost us a few dear hours of ascent. Even the bus ride was not the most uninteresting one, we were almost left behind on a desolated 'dhaba' at 2 in the morning. Oh, btw, by we I refer to Rishi, ... read more
