So I am back in the country of the holy cow (and the holy cow shit!!!) and really happy to be here. Waw, it's been only 3 days and it feels like weeks! I was busy! After the long flight straight from Newark, I spent one brief night in Mumbai. It's funny how Mumbai feels so familiar now, I was even able to tell my taxi driver how to get to my hotel!!! And going back to my "traditional internet place", I was welcomed by the same young and friendly guy who asked me right away "Do you remember me?". Of course I did, but I couldn't believe he remembered me. Apparently he did, or if he just pretended (as it is often the case), he did it very well. It was nice anyway and I ... read more

Settling into Bhuj local and localised life is good, actually it is great. I love hopping on the mo ped (or in India they call it the Activa) and taking myself off to buy fruit and veg, visiting and just feeling a little more free. My time in Bhuj is coming to an end where we will be travelling to Ahmedabad for the annual kite festival and simultanously the Vibrant Gujurat Summit. I am sure lodging with passionate citizens of Gujurat we will be visiting the site and activities that go with such a showcase for the state. Then off to Vadodara for the love marriage of hardik and Kunjan. I will add photos when I can. Take care Tess Avju x0... read more

The last major stop on our re-tooled itinerary was the northern Gujarati region referred to as Kachchh. The Kachchh region stretches along the Pakistani border and is known for its colourful tribes, amazing textiles and inhospitable climate. Contained within the region are two barren, flat salt deserts, one large and one smaller, lacking any plant life whatsoever, and referred to as the Great Rann and Little Rann respectively. From our research, we learned that this area was remote, largely untouristed and offered up fascinating landscape with close peeks of tribal life. We scored a rather comfortable A/C coach from Ahmedabad to the Kachchhi capital of Bhuj run by the Swambinath bus company…it is fair to say that this was the most comfortable sleeper bus experience we had in India and it made all the difference when ... read more

Hello friends! I was on tour of Rann Utsav-biggest festival celebrated by Gujarat Government at Dhordo-Kutch where I was appointed as a Tourist Guide to support tourist from Rotary International Students. They were 50 people in our group we spent most wonderful time in Dhordo. First day we took part in Inauguration of Scalton of Whale, found in Kutch, in Hill Garden Bhuj. That evening we had chance to see dance groups who have taken part in Kutch Carnival which is celebrated for the last 2 years in Bhuj. More than 40 groups taken part with various subject, dresses, music, and that was so splendid! even I could not stop myself from dancing with some of the groups ;-) Next day we went Kalo Dungar" Blake Hill-Highest hill in Kutch from where you can view great ... read more

The Desert:the little Rann Sanctuary is someplace I've always wanted to visit. It is a desert for half of the year with temperatures touching 55 degrees celsius (131 F) with the occasional dust tornadoes. In the monsoon it is completely flooded and becomes a pit stop for millions of migratory birds. We visited in between the two seasons, and yet it was one of the most extreme environments I've ever visited. The endless earth was cracked and blinding white, all around you could see extraordinary mirages and it was quite disorientating. The Indian Wild Ass: The locals of this harsh environment are the indian wild ass, they look more like zebra and move in herds. They are extremely fast with running speeds of up to 70kmph. Seeing herds of these majestic creatures running across the parched ... read more

The alarm rang at 5:30 a.m. The plan was to leave the house by 6:30. Considering there were 21 of us going on the trip, and half of us had slept at 2 the previous morning, I wasn't expecting us to leave as planned. Miraculously, we were all piled into cars, luggage and all, by 6:45. At that time of the morning, Mumbai's streets are eerily quiet. We raced through the city and were on the freeway in no time. The road stretched endlessly ahead of us. We had to endure a 14-hour drive before arriving at Rann Riders - the cozy resort situated close to the salt desert of Kutch. The ambiance at Rann Riders was amazing! The huts, the gardens, the food ... all were excellent. My favorite part was the tropical outdoor bath ... read more
