Day 10 After all of the ups and downs of yesterday, we ended on a high with beer on the balcony! This morning we had breakfast before sitting down to organise our next move. We need to arrange where we want to spend New Year, travel, and accommodation. After a few Internet issues we finally decided on Palolem Beach. We varied our thoughts between taxi or local bus, but given my financial situation, due to the loss of both cards, we agreed on low cost bus. We booked two nights at The Laughing Buddha beach Huts on the beach..... Then off we went! It all worked out perfectly! We are both very happy with our decisions and choices. Had a chilled couple of hours just sat outside our hut..... Daydreaming and chatting! We decided to go ... read more

Day 9 Yyyyaaayyyy..... An easy morning with no alam!..... And it's my birthday! We got up, got showered and all ready for a good breakfast. As we left the room, Muhto, and his son, was already waiting for us outside our door! We all went back into the room, as we needed to. catch up with Muhto. Hen Tom presented a lovely birthday cake that he had sourced through Muhto! It was such a nice surprise. I also brought one gift from home to open. Thank you Claire and Dimitri, I love it! I had a card from Tom, but not from home as we are travelling today, so I knew that I couldn't actually enjoy them here. We all had cake before breakfast. What a great start to the day. Thank you so much Tom ... read more

Panjim was where I met Terry 26 years ago on the last night of the Festival of Ganesh and was keen to see if I could remember anything about it. It’s a long time in any city’s life and I am sure no different in this one. Then train does not go into the city but stops about 40 kilometers outside at a place called Vasco and we took a taxi into town. The terrain was now hilly with coconut covered hills and water in rivers and lakes. I saw a kingfisher and was thrilled by its colours. I was happy with the little hotel we had booked called Hosperdaria Abrigo De Botelho it looks as lovely as the pictures and that is what Toni and I are always on about when regards the Backpack do ... read more

Long time, no Blog! Truth is, there's nothing exceptional to report. That said, I've still got a barrel of experiences to rummage around in, and here are a few token ones plucked out to keep the hungry Blog audience at bay! As the title suggests, this week and a bit of travel has been beach-based. From Mumbai, I took the ferry and bus to Murad - a small fishing village between Goa and Mumbai. It's in the Lonely Planet for its long empty beach and chilled-out local "vibe" and I was not disappointed. Surprisingly, I had the beach to myself for the couple of days I spent there. Even more surprisingly, I couldn't help but set out on various pointless excursions around the area to appease my restless legs. You might've thought I'd earnt a break! ... read more

J: Mumbai is huge. Twice the size of London and with people absolutely everywhere. It felt like every space large enough to occupy a person contained one. We had two days in Mumbai so we walked around the city and took in local cricket matches at Maiden Oval, admired Mumbai harbour from athe Gateway of India and had lunch at the famous Leopald's. We sneaked into the regal Taj Palace hotel for a look around and watched the sun go down over Chowpatty Beach. An endearing quality of Mumbai was that the most impressive architecture was found not in museums or private residences, but in public service buildings. The Post Office and Mumbai University were both very grand and the main train terminal, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, was spectacular. Mumbai to Goa was twelve hours by train ... read more

Blog 8th - 21st February Kollam - Alleppey - Kochi - Palolem Bewildered Backwater Boating and Palolem Party People Kollam is not a place you want to spend much time, but it was a great base for us to board our 8 hour ferry to Alleppey to explore the Keralan backwaters. Unsure what to expect from the journey we bagged prime seats on the top deck of the ferry full of excitement, bags of bananas and cashews to keep spirits high, and ignored the sewage stink of the river. The ferry passed through such contrasting parts of the backwaters, from large expanses of lake to smaller channels, it was a real eye opener as to how the Keralan people live on the banks of the network of rivers that act as highways for 75km. We passed ... read more

S'avonds staken ze miljoenen kaarsjes ... read more

GOA: This old Portuguese enclave used to be 15 years ago the place to be for a great party nowadays when you arrived low season (as we did), there is no more. 23/08 to 28/08 /12: Palolem We arrived low-season therefore we found closed guesthouse. They will start again in late October. Nevertheless we enjoyed a good 2 days of sun and exploring followed by 3 days of Monsoon. The streets transformed themselves in rivers ! It was great to feel the intensity of the monsoon rains...! We met some lovely people in Palolem (from UK & France & we hope to see the French couple (Charlie & Fanny) in Paris in May....) There is two nice beaches further along. You do get some hawkers trying to sell jelleweries (self-made!?) but to be honest nothing original ... read more

24.4 - 26.4 Zugfahrt wart okay.

A bit to long of a gap between entries, however the last few weeks have been…shall we say interesting. Sadly we encountered the dreaded Dehli Belly (Ecoli for me though) and it took us down. Scary being that we where in very rural India (Palolem, GOA) where hospitals are close but empty with only a few nurse and staff to give attention to those in need. Not to mention they look and feel as if we stepped into the sixties. The experience was very enlightening; I felt the caring these folks gave even through the language barrier, the doctor coming quickly from the village and the rush into the “Casualty Room” with various young nurses running around taking my vitals. In the end everything worked out leaving me with yet another “India Badge”. The medical folks ... read more
