Homes of the Indian Nations (HOINA) is an orphanage about 20km outside of Visag. It has two homes separated by about 100meters, one housing 86 girls and the other over 100 boys ranging in age from babies to late teens. It is the closest thing to paradise I have seen since coming to India. It is set against the backdrop of lush green palm trees, rice paddies, mountains and constantly wandering herds of goats and cows. The children come primarily from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, are housed here free of charge, and have their schooling paid for all the way through college or vocational school. Their backgrounds, from what I can gather, seem to be very diverse. Everything from their parents could not feed another mouth and had to put them out to both parents ... read more

Sorry folks try as I might, I can not get this video to play right side up. Crazy. It's with mixed emotions that I left India. Unfortunately a family emergency called me away a month early. The fortunate thing is I was one week away from completing my 3mth stay in the orphanage but my final month of traveling with my sister was cancelled. Oh well I guess everything happens for a reason, must be a good reason why the universe wanted me out of India so soon. Because I was called home for a family emergency, I had only 12hrs to prepare for my departure and say goodbye to all the beautiful babes. I thought it would be tough but we all laughed and joked instead of crying. Maybe leaving suddenly is a good ... read more

On the way to the Internet Cafe I nearly stepped on a young boy pooping on the sidewalk. Immediately many things go through my mind, such as "Wow that is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen," "wow, that is the saddest thing I have ever seen," "this is the result of negligent parenting," "somebody needs to clean that shit up because I know there is a 90% chance I am stepping in it later," "am I the only one who finds this odd," "I wonder why he chose that spot," "I wonder if he does this often" and so on and so forth. Unfortunately all of these thoughts take me further from the reality of a little boy with his head in his hands pooping on the sidewalk, not to mention uneven sidewalks, ubiquitous ... read more

The last week I have been wandering east toward Visakh. I figured out how to use the tourist quota and left Aurangabad at 3:30AM on a sleeper train toward Hyderabad. The train station was wall to wall sleeping people who were waiting for their respective early morning trains. It was a sea of humanity in tons of colors and the sounds of snoring and coughing with mounds of bodies covered in colorful blankets and patrolled by groups of wandering dogs meandering in and out of the sleeping lumps. The Sleeper Car where I had my ticket was a rail car jammed with as many benches for sleeping as it could hold. They sat three high and were approximately 24 inches wide, with little more padding than a generic bench. I finally managed a few hours of ... read more

The adventures of Daron and Kirstin continue! This time in India, where we traveled from Hyderabad to the Andaman Islands with our 2 good friends, Dan and Meryl! India...the country we've been wanting to visit for years...crazy to believe we've already been there and back! Lots happened in 2 weeks. I will attempt to play it back for you: Thursday, 28 October We depart Phnom Penh and arrive in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2 hours later. We stay at a hotel 5 mins from the airport, so don't see anything more than the airport and the parking lot. Still, it's obvious we've entered a different world than our dear Cambodia. (I will leave Daron to detail the differences between KL and PNP in another blogpost.) Friday, 29 October We wake up at 4:00am. (Terrible! The first of ... read more

I saw a cow in the village with a tongue growing out of the middle of his back. I snapped a pic because no one would believe me. Some of the boys also saw it and we have looked for that cow everyday in the same field but we have not seen it again. Strange. A man walking down the street with a gigantic bag of popcorn on his head. I have no idea what he is selling it for but it can't be much. Man he must be tired at the end of the day. Try to hold an akward sized item over your head for hours in the sun walking barefoot. There seems to be a general lack of punctuality with Indians. Everyone is always late but never rushed. No road signs anywhere. ... read more

Everybody has a story here - guess that is life growing up in an orphanage in India. So much history - most unfortunately sad. We have an older girl living here who will spend the rest of her life in our home. Thank god for the kind graces of Child Haven International (CHI) that she is not forced out on the streets like so many others. Jody (name changed to protect her) arrived at the age of 14, she is now around 30. The local police dropped her off one night in our hostel (when we were located in Hyderabad before relocating to Kismapur village). They picked her up after she had been brutally raped at the hands of 3-4 autorickshaw drivers. Who knows how many - one is more than enough. The police asked the ... read more

It takes a lot of mental effort for me to go into the city of Hyderabad. Don't get me wrong, I love the hustle and bustle and people watching, it's just hard and I have literally seen less than 5 other white people I do go in. This is not a popular stop on the tourist trail and the foreigners who are in the city are working high tech in a specific pocket on the outskirts. Generally living in gate communities and some with drivers. Needless to say when I go out, I am a spectacle, unless I am in Banjara Hills or High Tech City. People want to snap their photo of me. I can just imagine that I am the western girlfriend that some boys show off to their friends. I hide behind my ... read more
