Woken up this morning at 5am by the call for prayer. It's Ramadan ... didn't they realise that there were some jet legged girls trying to get some sleep here! Hyderabad's population is 70% Muslim and 30% Hindu, we were told at breakfast by on of the waiters, while eating our ring sting breakfasts - curry, chapati, dosas and dhal ... and we were hoping to lose weight here! Ventured into the city with a tuk-tuk and were again overcharged ... that was before we learned some very hard haggling skills, to the point where by the end of the day no one would take us on a tuk-tuk any more. Streets are overcrowded with people, fruit vendors, children, beggars, motorbikes, cars, tuk-tuks, vans, bicycles and buses. Sidewalks are used for men peeing against the wall, ... read more

OLD COUPLES YATRA TO HOLY HILLS (7) 28-01-2010 – Thursday After visiting Tallapaka, we proceeded towards Horsley Hills. On the way we had our lunch in Rayachoti. There is only one vegetarian Restaurant near Bus Stand, which is reasonably good. Enjoying the scenic beauty on the way we proceeded towards Horsley Hills. When the destination is about 30 km there are sign boards on either side of the road put up by AP Tourism Department giving Mobile Number of their office in Horsley Hills. We telephoned to the office to enquire about accommodation and the Manager intimated that this is a lean season and accommodation is available without prior reservation. Having assured of accommodation, we slowly proceeded towards Horsley Hills enjoying the journey among hills and forests. We reached the Hills Resort by 5 pm ... read more

Remember when I said my train to Delhi was notorious for being late? Well, it didn't let itself down. It made my twelve hour trip into a seventeen hour mission. How can a night train be this late?! Thankfully, I had given myself an extra day before my flight to Hyderabad. I must be learning! Getting to Hyderabad was simple enough on the elegant sounding (not) local airline "SpiceJet". It was a different case when collecting my rucksack. I waited by the baggage carousel for a good forty-five minutes. My brightly orange covered bag was nowhere to be seen. Being close to slowly soiling myself, I checked the board again. I discovered that two flights from Delhi had arrived at the same time and I had been standing next to the other flight's carousel the whole ... read more

OLD COUPLES MINI MAGHA MASA YATRA (5) 25th FEBRUARY, 2011 - FRIDAY Shri Parvatalu said to have found a great linga in the ant hill and appears to have built a temple with the archanamurti Sri Subrahmanyeswara Swamy flanked by his wives Sri Valli and Devasena. It is the belief of the devotees that the diseases of ears and eyes are cured with a forty day worship of the Lord. In the later years, the Zamindars of Challapalli developed the temple and provided sufficient funds for its maintenance. Another important feature of this Kshetram is that River Krishna is flowing in the northern direction to this Kshetram. According to puranas, persons suffering from Sarpa Dosha, Rahu and Ketu graha doshas are relieved of their negative effects by worshipping Sri Valli Devasena sametha of Lord Subrahmanyeswara swamy ... read more

(Day 1081 on the road)Holi cow! I knew that the ecstatic Indian Holi festival was going to be great, but nobody could have prepared me for what we were about to experience. It was a simply mad, and we had a blast! A little background: Holi is celebrated in India to welcome the spring and say goodbye to winter. Basically people take to the streets and throw bright colour powder called gulal at each other, while bonfires the night before are lit to symbolise the demise of the evil demoness Holika, who gives the festival its name. It is celebrated differently in different parts of India, with the north apparently being wilder than the south. But the celebrations here in Hyderabad proved plenty for us as it turned out, and we were very content. It had ... read more

OLD COUPLES MINI MAGHA MASA YATRA (4) SIGNIFICANCE OF TWO ICONS OF LORD VENKATESWARA It is a very great and pleasant experience to have darshan of two main idols on the same pedastal and under the same Vimana Sikharam. In no other temple in India we witness such a wonderful feature – two Shiva lingas on the same pana pattam in Kaleswaram temple. The main idol (moola viraat) originally discovered by Sage Dwaraka is a half statue from naval and upwards. In course of time, the Sages and Saints felt that worshipping Lord Venkateswara is not complete unless prayers are offered at his HOLY FEET (Brahma kadigina padamu). Perhaps taking this into account the great Vaishnava Saint Srimad Ramanujacharya installed a full statue of Lord Venkateswara behind the half statue brought to light by Sage Dwaraka ... read more

OLD COUPLES MINI MIGHA MASA YATRA (2) Dt.20th FEBRUARY, 2011 - SUNDAY We proceeded to the temple of Brahma Lingeswara Shiva Temple where priests are performing pujas to Lord Vighneswara and Lord Shiva. We enquired about the temple of Lord Chaturmukha Brahma and the priests informed that this temple is by the side of the Shiva Temple and it is situated in a pushkarini in a low lying area and on account of heavy rains during this year, lot of water accumulated in the pushkarini and the temple is partly submerged in water and there is no way to enter into the temple and hence the sanctum sanctorium was closed and it may likely to be reopened around May when water in the pushkarnini may recede. The priests advised us to visit the temple from ... read more

OLD COUPLES MINI MAGHA MASA YATRA (1) I had a desire to perform Samudra Snanam (bath in sea waters) in Magha Masam and visit the temples of Trinities Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara, in the same trip. Earlier when we were at Vijayawada in the year 2000 we made it a point to have Samudra Snanam in Ashadha, Karthika, Magha and Vaisakha Masams and accordingly visited the beaches of Manginapudi (Masulipatam), Surya Lanka (Bapatla), Hamsala Deevi (Avanigadda) and Vadarevu (Chirala). Our great Sages have ordained that one should perform Samudra Snanam in Magha Masam, taking into account the benefit it confers healthwise. ADVANTAGES OF MAGHA SNANAM IN SEA WATERS In the earlier months to Magha Masam, on account of cold and snow, the body becomes weak because of lack proper sunshine, etc. In Magha Masam the ... read more

Sorry folks try as I might, I can not get this video to play right side up. Crazy. It's with mixed emotions that I left India. Unfortunately a family emergency called me away a month early. The fortunate thing is I was one week away from completing my 3mth stay in the orphanage but my final month of traveling with my sister was cancelled. Oh well I guess everything happens for a reason, must be a good reason why the universe wanted me out of India so soon. Because I was called home for a family emergency, I had only 12hrs to prepare for my departure and say goodbye to all the beautiful babes. I thought it would be tough but we all laughed and joked instead of crying. Maybe leaving suddenly is a good ... read more
