sushi in the supermarket
Addie's first choice for lunch sushi from the great supermarket called taste Four days in Hong Kong was just not enough. I was very lucky to have Adrienne as my own personal tour guide. We both were extremely luckily that we had a free place to stay. Gavin from our home town who now lives in Hong Kong let us crash at his flat. He was also nice enough to help Adrienne when she first arrived in Hong Kong in January.
SO because places are small, as well as I was just sick of my stuff I left all my bags at the airport. It not super cheap but well worth it not having to lug tons of weight around when you are not going to be in a city for a long time.
We went to check out Addie's school on the first day, having lunch in the garden. Then we strolled the ladies martke and I picked up a great, real real fake purse. We were on and off the MTR, which is so easy to use and a great way to get around. After exploring most of the day we stopped for a drink and some munch. At this great little place that had a Canadian favourite,
Our garden lunch
we ate in the garden of addie's school. It was beautiful, lush green with pond and small waterfalls fries with cheese on top covered with gravy, oh so good.
After a Corona (great summer beer), for the price of a local one I love happy hour, we started our walk to the bottom of the peak. Since it was a clear day, and there are not a lot of them in Hong Kong the line up to reach the top of the peak was long. The ride up is quick a trip. I thought it would be a a long slight incline up the hill but really it is a short ride at about a 45 degree angel. What was at the top of the peak was also a surprise to me. I never expected a huge shopping mall, a ton of restaurants and million dollar homes. Even the burger king and McDonald's had wonderful views of Hong Kong.
Over the next few days we shopped and walked and eat all over Hong Kong. since I am not really a city person I was expecting not to like it as much as I did. It really is a great city. Everyone is so friendly and getting around is easy, and pleasant. No eating or drinking on
the underground , which I always forgot and ended up with a bottle of diet coke every time we were on it.
After one morning of exploring we headed to Ocean Park a local amusement park with marine life. I think it was the hottest day we had experienced in the three months we had been travelling. under the boiling sun we waited in a line to ride a roller coaster, sat in the bright orange chairs surrounded by umbrellas (even tough it was not rainy) to watch the sea lion and dolphin show. We also road the escalators up the side of the mountain which ocean park is localed on. There are no stairs to walk up, just 4 of the slowest escalates known to man that are under a cover so you can't get wet if it rains and yet you still have to watch out so as not to loss an eye from the end of a umbrella spoke.
While still in Vietnam we had tried to sign up for the dolphin encounters but found out that it was full up every season until after when we were due to fly home. On a wime
just a little shinny at the peak
Even though everywhere we had been was hot HOng Kong was really hot. Not even in the evening did it cool down. we asked about being able to participate in the class the next day, and were happy to find out that there were two spot that had opened up. Unfortunately for Adrienne the spots were in the afternoon and her flight was to leave before the experience was over. Fortunately for me though my flight was late and I was trying to find something to fill the 7 hour from when she left and when I was due to leave and this was the perfect solution.
After our last breakfast together for who knows how long. We are heading back to different home countries. We had a small walk around the crowded shopping district and parted ways when taking separate lines on the MTR. It is weird because you go off and do your own thing so often when travelling I don't think either of us realized that it would be the last time on this trip. It felt more like a see you in a few hours then a bye until I see you at mum and dads in a week.
When I arrive at ocean park I tried to make it up to the dolphin enclosure as
happy day to you
After we learnt that the peace sign also means happy day it became our thing for the rest of our Hong Kong pictures fast as possible. Excusing myself through people, working my way up the escalators. That was until the third time I got scraped with an umbrella spoke, this time drawing blood. Slowing me down a bit then I looked up to see how many more escalators there were I saw a sea of pink and blue umbrellas just a head and knew that it would be a impossible mission to try and manoeuvre through them.
The encounter with the dolphins was brilliant. It wasn't swimming with the dolphins as my dear sister had told me it would be. Instead you are in a pool with 2 dolphins and you work on commands, interacting and petting them. It felt way to short. At least i had time to walk around the rest of the park and check out the shark aquarium, it was the most impressive collection of sea life that I have ever seen. They have an moving walk way which goes through one of the tanks that houses just sharks. It allows you to see the underneath of the hammer heads and the tiny eyes and sharp teeth of the others.
So after my walk around the rest
of the park I headed back to Gavin's and picked up my one bags and headed to the airport. Once again Hong Kong hands down beats any other country with transportation to the airport. One quick stop brought me to central and then it was a 30 minute train ride to the airport. After collecting the rest of my baggage I checked in and head down to my gate. After being search only three time I sat at the gate until the plane boarded. Unable to make a phone call or get something to eat, since the final security check was a closed off area right at our gate that you were unable to leave once you entered, I was glad when it was time to board the plan. Only to find out that i had been selected for the additional security screening. I guess three times is not a charm.
Only 6 movies a 18 hour lay over in San Fransisco and 3 more movies and I touched down in Boston. A few days at home before I fly again to Canada my old and true home.
