Geo: 41.9195, 45.4708Being renowned for wine, both its current-day production and its long and storied history, any visit to Georgia would not be complete without a visit to one of its wine-growing regions to sample a few of the many wineries. It's always interesting to see how different countries approach oenotourism, especially in the former Soviet Republics, simply for the novelty of wine actually being produced in these countries. If you had been raised on a steady diet of Cold War-era propaganda, you'd think that former Soviet Republics only produced potatoes, vodka, and KGB agents. Who would have thought that in a place like Georgia, evidence of wine making has been found that dates back to 6000-8000 BC, and that this country is believed to be the birthplace of wine? Georgians are proud of their wine ... read more

Geo: 41.9195, 45.4708That sneaky bastard GI Ardia - I was convinced he had retreated, but that was all a strategic ploy on his part, so that he could mount a surprise counter attack when my guard was down. Even worse, today he brought reinforcements, in the form of a sinus cold, congestion, a cough, and a mild fever. I must be getting too old for this backpacking shit, because I can't remember ever having this many ailments hit me all at once!Luckily for me, it was only a relatively-short marshrutka ride from Tbilisi to Telavi today, and I got here early enough in the afternoon to have a nice, long relaxing session of doing absolutely nothing at the guesthouse. The beauty of staying at a small guesthouse in Telavi, really more of a home stay, is ... read more

Geo: 41.72, 44.79Travel shrinks the World, bringing people, culture, and ideas together, ideally helping to bridge the gaps that exist among humanity - whether or not that is the intention, it's perhaps the best byproduct of one of the most enjoyable past times. It happens more often that you might think while traveling, and can sometimes be the simplest of exchanges - the telling of a funny travel anecdote, the sharing of a personal story, or providing some insight into your native land.A simple truth - a traveler has many more of these types of interactions as a backpacker, as by nature, this style of travel is more conducive to meeting others. Case in point was the other day in Yerevan, touring the Ararat Brandy Company. In most other countries, a brandy factory isn't the typical ... read more

Geo: 41.6891, 44.8091“Donaghy Estates tastes like the urine of Satan after a hefty portion of asparagus." Not exactly the kind of review any winemaker would ever want, but it's probably the most comical critique ever made by famed wine critic Robert Parker. Of course, those were never really Robert Parker's words - it was all part of a gag on 30 Rock, but words that have stuck with me since. Who knows, maybe it was a true review - 30 Rock knew of the existence of Svenborgia, after all!Any time I taste any less-than-stellar wine, I think back to that mock wine review and try and imagine how Satan's asparagus-saturated urine would taste like, and have another sip of that bad wine to compare. Every time, I'll say to myself "Yeah, maybe this wine isn't so ... read more

Geo: 41.72, 44.79With only a few hours left in Istanbul before departing for Georgia, I made a beeline over to Topkapi Palace immediately after breakfast and checking out of the hostel. With the Museum Pass, I could easily stroll right inside, tour the palace for a couple of hours, and perhaps even have some time for a Turkish coffee somewhere before picking up my backpack from the hostel, and making my way to Ataturk airport. Wrong!!!Even though I didn't quite break even with the Museum Pass, it was still worthwhile because I could skip the ticket line at busy attractions, which was anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes at the more popular ones. Also, at Aya Sofya, I was able to skip the entrance line and jump to the front of the security checkpoint queue. Unfortunately, ... read more

Amasya, Turkey July 24th 2014 “Law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress.” Martin Luther King, Jr. “I know all the rules but the rules did not know me” Eddie Vedder, Guaranteed I hear that the Georgian Government is trying to position itself for full membership to the European Community. While my treatment as described in recent blogs hardly amounts to severe in that I still have both my legs, I do wonder how the behaviour meted out to me adds anything to the Georgian case to be attempting to promote a fair and reasonable civil society. I am 59 years old. ... read more

The Soviet-built, clattle-trap subway car is just flat-out flying down the track; I mean this sucker is really moving out and I can feel the wheels coming off the rails on every pitch black fun-house curve and Karen and I monkey-hang from handrails as best we can while our mystery engineer accelerates and decelerates on a depraved whim, whip-sawing us down to our toes. The car is 'standing room only' full of people; lacy black-bra'd, thick ankled women in see-through blouses, young, skinny, green-garbed soldiers playing grab ass while small covens of raven-banged death metal wannabe's in ripped black jeans and goopy India-ink eye-liner are standing so impossibly still they look as if they're hanging out on the street corners that are whizzing by 200-feet over our heads. We're in Tbilisi and it is wonderful. We ... read more

Akhaltsikhe, Georgia July 22nd 2014 “Every revolution evaporates and leaves behind only the slime of a new bureaucracy” Franz Kafka “Everything will be all right in the end... if it's not all right then it's not yet the end” Sony, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Finale; Scene 1: Tuesday July 22nd: The story of today should not have been needed. I should have been on the bus out of here to Turkey by midday. Except that Georgia suffers from a bureacratic quagmire that I have never before encountered, and it deserves a dedicated write up. I wake up early and do my stuff. I go to the ATM because yesterday when I heard about my fine and tried to withdrawer the amount from my travel card, there was a limit per day stopping me... read more

Akhaltsikhe, Georgia July 20th 2014 "There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting" Buddha “In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you” Deepak Chopra “The truth will set you free. But not until it is finished with you” David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest So once again there is no news from the Public Prosecutor as to when this saga will end. This is not distressing me, as I was intent to take advantage of my 'free' weekend in Georgia, and then see what eventuated come Monday morning. The smoke-filled taxi was an old, silver, Mercedes station-wagon. The front bumper was missing. Manual transmission. The wooden gear shift knob so palm-worn that the 5-speed diagram was a ghostly memory. The evening air so mist-ridden it was like flying through a cloud. The driver spoke a bit of German but just a bit. He colored every word with Georgian accents, inhalations and puffs of air. A cigarette perpetually dangling from the right corner of his mouth only added to the bewildering patois. We drove along what passes for a seaside boulevard here. A long narrow park carpeted with sedge-weed and dandelions. He pointed proudly at the new hotels being constructed along the way; Radeesun, Highut, Newvatell he exclaimed, beaming like a newborn's Papa. The towers were brightly lit in pastel hues and stacked into an ... read more
