So after 2 day of travelling we're finally here. First our plane from Palmerston North to Auckland got cancelled. Then we got another plane. Then they left my dad's suitcase behind. Then we had to run from domestic to international in order to catch our plane to Brisbane. And my dad's suitcase was still left behind. Then we flew from Brisbane to Darwin. I slept on the plane for a bit - then we got to Darwin at the top of Australia - and that's when we discovered my dad's suitcase had been left behind. We stayed the night in Darwin. In the morning we went to a fancy resort for breakfast. It had a really nice pool and sun loungers for relaxing on. But we didn't relax because we went to a crocodile farm. I ... read more

Most if not all these months of July and August had been planned back in January and February. Only one part was left to the last minute, these little few days in Dili. Dili, is the capital of Timor East, aka Timor Leste, the newest country in Asia independent since only 2002. More on the history of Timor later. To reach Dili, there are....few flights. Sriwijaya is flying once or twice a day from Bali in a short, old 737. AirNorth is flying also once or twice per day on small planes from Darwin, and Silk Air has three flights a week from Singapore. As I was in Bali, Sriwijaya was the ideal choice. Slight problem, you cannot buy tickets outside of Indonesia, and via the internet, the only way is with an Indonesian credit card. ... read more

A group of men dressed in army uniforms exit from three white 4WD’s and briskly walk towards me. One speaks up to reassure, “You okay mate? Don’t worry, I’m a registered nurse. The others will get your bike, we’ll move our cars to the side to let everyone else pass and I’ll patch you up under the tree over there.” After four days in East Timor’s capital, Dili the true adventure appeared lost until I decided to ride to the districts. East Timor (Timor-Leste) is one of the newest countries in the world with independence granted in 2002 (although they briefly were independent in late 1975 between being a Portuguese colony and Indonesia’s occupation.) 5 years earlier I had dreamt of coming here but due to expensive flights I headed to Singapore instead to begin my ... read more

Geo: 11.18, -60.74Today we added another Scarborough to our collection. Apart from the original in the UK, we have been to one in Australia, South Africa and both North and South America. This Scarborough was in Tobago in the Caribbean. We had opted for a trek in the rain forest, which involved an early start because to get to the rainforest there was over an hour's drive in a somewhat bumpy minivan. However it did mean we got to see quite a bit of the island and guess what, it looks like all the others! In other words there was lots of lush greenery and pretty coastline generally spoilt by a hotchpotch of buildings, some painted in very garish colours, far too many cars and far too much litter. Once at the rain forest we were ... read more

After the usual breakfast we jumped into the car for Dili via Dare. The fog shrouded the mountains on our way out and the drizzle and cool air meant that we left Maubisse in jumpers. The drizzle was soon behind us though as we lost altitude and by 10:30 the sun was blaring hot and we swapped the thermals for sunscreen. The memorial/museum/cafeat Dare was not as impressive as we had hoped mainly aswe were disappointed about the lack of coffee (ie none) the coffee grown here is strong and black and smooth and we havent yet had a good cup of it – saving it for Dare. But the museum did have a great exhibition about WWII and copies of the flyers dropped from planes by the Australians as they left saying ‘your friends do ... read more
