WE MADE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here we are at Base Camp Mount Everest. Breath taking...... We have travelled to a lot of different places while we have been living in China but Tibet is one of the most amazing places were have been lucky to go to. It was one of the hardest trips we have been on as we are travelling with 2 children aged 5 and 9 years old. From all the research we did before hand, not many families make this trip. It took us all a few days to get used to the air change and altitude but the boys had really bad sickness and on that first day we thought...."what are we doing taking our kids here?" We had a fantastic driver and guild who stayed with us for the whole trip. They had oxygen bottles in the back of the car and came to Williams rescue a few times but after 2/3 days they were looking and feeling so much better!
We visited a lot of different temples in the first couple of days. So many pretty building but many had lots of steep steps which in itself what a major challenge for us all as we travelled higher up the thinner the air. We travelled in the car

Amazing building! for lots of hours but with the sights on Mount Everest in our minds we were getting closer to our life time goal. Day 4 was an exciting day for us because we were going to camp in the middle of nowhere by an amazing lake with views all around. We have seen many pictures of views like this but to be able to see these with our own eyes was breath taking. Our driver and guild put up our tents and cooked a fantastic dinner over the camp fire. I have always wanted to try horse riding and our guild arranged for us to horse ride around the lake! This was an experience I will never forget and I don't think my husband or boys will forget either!!!! There was no saddle, just a blanket over the horse to sit on and a rope around the horse for me to hold.....these were big horses and I have short legs so I found it so hard to get on the animal!!!! I had the 2 men who own the horses one side and my guild the other side all trying to pull, lift and push me to help me on
this horse!!! Oh my goodness we were all crying with laughter! We were booked for a 3 hour trek but I only managed an hour!!! But I am so proud of myself getting that far! Getting off was a bit tricky too, good job not many people saw this!!!
We travelled in October....the weather is nice and warm in the sunshine but as soon as the sun goes down the temperature drops and fast! Our driver and guild provided sleeping bags but even they were cold so they called the horse men back and they came riding back from the village with lots of blankets for us all! They were a God Send!!! Now, the spot we chose to camp was in the middle of nowhere so no lighting at night time just pitch black. The reason we chose this was because we have seen pictures and heard about the amazing sky at night time. It was a dream of my husband and I to see the amazing sky at night. We got up at midnight wrapped in blankets and a blanket of snow on the ground..... I only wish we had a powerful camera because the sky at

We had just arrived at the hotel but the staff and our driver we amazing at helping William when he passed out. night was outstanding......we saw the Milky Way so clearly and the sky was alight with twinkling stars and we were lucky enough to see so many shooting stars. It is a moment that my husband and I will NEVER forget and a memory we will share forever. We could not stop staring at this amazing sky, spotting so many different stars. Everywhere you turned, we spotted something new......
We didn't get much sleep due to the cold so we got up early and put every single piece of clothing on and wrapped in blankets and sat and watched the sun come up over the mountains and lake.......So peaceful and just amazingly breath taking as if time stood still.
Time to move on! We stayed at another town and hotel for 1 night to warm up and then the long drive to Camp Mount Everest! So worth all the long car journeys. We drove along a very long windy road that seem to go on and on and on but once we reached the top......OH MY GOODNESS I was not prepared for what I was about to see! The views of the Himalayan mountains was just amazingly breath taking
it brought tears to my eyes because I never thought I would ever see anything like this. It was like looking at the many pictures we have seen of this beautiful place and I had to blink and pinch myself. Another special moment Andy and I share and will never forget that moment. We finally made it to Base Camp that afternoon and went straight to the carpark to meet our mini bus that was going to take us to the base of Mount Everest. This short ride was the bumpiest ride I have ever been on!!!! We got off the bus and had a very short walk up a rocky path but we were really feeling the thin air so found this hard but my goodness when we got to the top the view just blew us away. There in front of us stood the impressive mount Everest, the sun shining on the snow. I never thought I would ever see this in my life time, we are so so so lucky and this will be a memory that will hopefully last forever for our two boys. There are not many people that can say they have see Mount
Everest at such a young age! Not many families are brave enough to make the massive journey and to cope with the sickness and lack of oxygen. At that time we were the only family staying here. We made it!!! And I am so proud of us for doing this. We got to take some amazing photos and see the sun setting against the mountain. I will add that it was crazy cold up there and so windy!!!! The sun was shining and it felt so hot, I even burnt my face....tip put a little sun cream on!!!!! We live and learn!
We were going to camp here but we chickened out because it was so cold and we needed a mattress to sleep on! (about -12 at night or even less I cant remember but it was windy too so felt even colder) We ended up staying at the hostel....an experience in itself!!!! I got up early to watch the sun coming up over the mountain.....what a view to wake up too! There were yaks roaming around too. We got to meet a lovely little boy who I will remember forever. He got so excited when he saw
my head torch. I gave him my torch to keep and he was over the moon with it and ran straight back to his tent to find his mum. Makes you realise just how lucky we are.
Time to say good bye to this amazing place and start to head back to Lassa. We had a couple of days drive back, went in a blur thinking of all the wonderful things we had just seen. We took the over night train and then a plane ride back to Tianjin. To travel on this famous train was a dream of my husbands! And now I can see why! It was a 24 hour ride.....we saw so many beautiful views along the way and Matthew and William had a blast sleeping in a bunk bed on a train!!!!!
Those that are expats or get the chance to travel, this place needs to be on your list! It will be the hardest journey of your life especially if you travel with children and yes there maybe ups and downs with the sickness along the way but you will get to see some of the most amazing things this earth has to
offer!
