Just in case any of you were curious what my life is like at SBR, I figured I'd post a short message.
It's about a 30-40 minute commute to get to the SBR Office.
Usually, I try to get to work about 15 minutes early so I can quickly check my email and such before cracking down. (PS - if you ever want to chat with me, the evening is best (your time).)
After the quick email-checking, it all begins.
My editor, Hayleigh Davies, keeps me fairly busy throughout the day. I do quite a range of things. First off, Hayleigh sends me news articles and I trim them down to about 50-60 words so they'll fit in the News Section of the magazine for the next issue or online.
For the July issue, I'm working on the Business Diaries section, which entails compiling events, trade shows, conferences, etcetera and organizing them in the appropriate spot - it involves a lot of research. The Business Diary section deadline for me is the 10th of June. On the fifth of June, I'll edit the Regulatory Update. A regulatory update is a list of new legal and tax developments affectiong foreign invested enterprises in Shanghai. The original copy is provided by CCH China and I cut, edit and organize the updates. Afterwards, I send my edits to Hayleigh, who double-checks them before sending it to production. It's so cool. lol.
Throughout the day, I spend time contacting possible interviewees for my feature story on Chinese university graduates and an HR internship program that will enable them to get jobs. That deadline is June 25th.
In addition to that, I'll randomly get a couple of articles to proofread and send back to Hayleigh or other members of the editorial team. This is my favorite part. By the way, sure...it's a bit geeky, but the June issue came two days ago and there was nothing better than seeing grammatical corrections in the magazine. Yup...I officially became a dork today - but I love it!
* The best thing ever happened to me today: I GOT MY BUSINESS CARDS! Now, it's official. Before, at networking events, I hand-wrote my name on my editor's business cards because mine hadn't come in yet. Absolutely ridiculous and the looks I got were just embarrassing. Fortunately, it's something that every intern goes through at SBR and I suspect other places as well. But anyway, yey to the business cards. There's too parts to Chinese business cards, by the way: one side is in English, the other is in Chinese. So cool!
Overall, my editor keeps me busy and it's great, because I've heard some complaints from other interns who've said their internships blow. Lucky me i guess. :D
Well, that about sums up what I have been doing, what I do, and what I will do at SBR. Feel free to post any questions if you're curious about something.
