David writes... I will include some pictures of Lynne's birthday gift from Dio in this one too. Well, we found it here, Yes it is a big deal! so get off my back! I mentioned we have been able to find coffee shops where we can pay 30yuan for a cup, today we actually found a shop with an espresso/cappuccino machine(GASP!), but today we ventured forth and found a coffee distributor. We woke leisurely after a hectic weekend of 8am to 8pm work this was because we held our Easter parties, yea i know it's early but hey, it's China so who cares. 100 kids per night and some activities and some chaos. Easter - In typical Asian fashion the kids are bustled around from room to room just going along for the ride, one adult ... read more

Ok, well we have been here a little over a month now and yes we have caught our first bug, a cold. But as Aussie's do we soldier on. It's a toss up on our days off weather to scour the markets or just stay at home, when we are not feeling so good it is not a hard decision. Lynne has just had her B'day and it is a big deal over here so the staff put on a cake and some loud happy birthday music.....hmmmm. The weather is fining up and the temperature is rising quickly from -6's to +6 in the first 2 weeks to +7 to 21 this week. the locals are out in force prettying the place and planting small gardens. It look like humans hibernate in the cold too because ... read more

Watching TV in China, a news broadcast on the NPC & CPPCC meeting in the PRC was being broadcast on CCTV9 and we were wondering if CNN, BBC and the NBC were also broadcasting the show. This also begs the question what if the members of the NPC & CPPCC in the PRC wanted to go to the WC at the same time?... read more

Well this is just a few words about teaching for beginners.....Get Fit First! especially if you will be teaching 4-6 year olds in kindergarten and, you teachers in Aussie land stop your griping these classes have 45-50 in each class. It was nuts... the teachers control the room and the kids listen Bizaar is another word. It doesn't help when you get told you are doing demo classes and you have 15mins to woo the crowd!, 6 classes in sequence all in the morning (when kids are at their most active!) So i have a plan. I have a show to do....! I begin...with the hello song! good, a winner! then some revision on colours! too easy....Ho! they know all this so let's turn up the heat a little and try some small phrases, Apple is ... read more

There's a buzz in the air...a stirring in the streets...preparations for something can be seen around town but for what, we don't know. Is it just Spring? Maybe? Tourist season, perhaps? We see new stores being cleaned, painted and fill with merchandise. But what type of merchandise, do you think? Postcards? pots and crockery? or other paraphernalia with Tai'an or Taishan written on it. Beautiful pictures perhaps? NO. Most of these shops in the Lotus Supercentre (our local shopping centre) are filling their shelves with rocks. All shapes and sizes. But these aren't any type of rock. These come from the sacred mountain Taishan. In the parks there are large feature boulders with a giant bonsai type tree wrapped around it, smaller feature rocks on a pedestal or smaller still that are placed around a tree. ... read more

Hi all, There will be fewer pictures this time. Well we have been here for 2 and a bit weeks now and China blows Vietnam and Malaysia out of the water as far as friendliness goes. I am not sure about the bigger cities but if you wanted to see an Asian country which has not been affected by the internet and television come here to China and check out some of the smaller country cities. They do not have much to offer as far as huge iconic structures for photo shoots but if you spend some time here you will find the people are friendly and they do not rip you off. We sit in the Dio coffee shop and now the staff often approach us trying their best to talk in English. When we ... read more

CHINA DAY 1 We have arrived! Our host met us at the airport with impeccable timing (You know just as we were looking like 2 stupid lost tourists). A brief chat and we find out that we are not off to Jinan (it was always on the cards) we are off to Tai'An. Tai'An is 1.5 hours drive south of Jinan. All the research we did on Jinan is out the window! Bugger! Miss Yen, the principal of the school, does not speak English....Does anyone else see something ironic about a principal of a private English teaching institution not being able to speak English?! Now off you go you have a long drive ahead. An hour later and we can see the sky for the first time....Not from pollution low cloud, even landing in the plane ... read more

I went on a long train trip with Gretchen, who I haven’t seen nearly enough of since Chinese people work too much; and Ashley, an arty friend from the Kindergarten. Our excursion took us to Tai An in Shandong Province, a town at the base of a beautiful mountain I climbed 4 years ago. We eventually arrived at an area I am looking into having some clothing made up in. I have a vision of a sewing community there and this was the first visit to suss it out. I’ve done a fair bit of research into a suitable area that has the fabric I want and now I need to find an area that I can put the money into by finding the people to sew. More so, to find people that can sew, who ... read more

This past weekend was one of the few long weekends in China so Trevor and I decided to take advantage of the extra day and took a trip to Tai'an where we would climb Mount Taishan, one of the 5 sacred mountains in China. It is both a UNESCO heritage site and a world heritage site, the first in the world. The mountain is in Shangdong Province, the journey from Beijing on the fast train took just under 4 hours. The ride was smooth and rather pleasant. Arriving in Tai'an we were not too sure what to expect but we knew we had to book a ticket back to Beijing right away, for some odd reason I was unable to buy a roundtrip ticket. Anyhow, it was such a struggle to communicate with the ticketing agent ... read more

I first read about Mount Tai'shan in Michael Palin's book "Full Circle" and added it to the China 'must do' list!! It is a total of 6660 steps to the top and it's believed that you will live for 100 years if you make it all the way. Many Chinese emperors have done the climb, some more than once and many people make the pilgrimage to the top each year. It said in the guide book that it would take about two hours to get to the 'Midway to Heaven Gate' and another 2 hours to get to the 'South Gate to Heaven' so we began the climb early, starting at just after 10am. Initially it wasn't too bad with a few steps and then flat ground, but as it went on it became just steps, ... read more
