Tongli's Pearl Pagoda Garden Tongli's Pearl Pagoda Garden is the largest of Tongli's gardens. It is an amazing place. I have been there twice and each time I find a new area I missed. This time I found the living area. I don't know how I missed it because it is large. The living area is gorgeous! It is a courtyard style home and each room is its own building and has a courtyard in between it and the next building. The living area is beautifully laid out. The garden is huge and the architecture is really beautiful! There are so many nooks and cranny's to explore and each area has a very different atmosphere than the next. The garden has a lake in it. It is the largest open area of the garden, but not the ... read more

Tongli's Garden of Seclusion and Meditation This is one of the many traditional Chinese gardens in Tongli. Although not built on the same scale as the ones in Suzhou, they are no less magnificent. They are free once you buy a ticket to the village. It is hard to imagine such beautiful gardens were once private property and part of someone's house. I like this garden very much. Visitors enter the garden at the living area of the house and can explore the ancient house. There are musicians there playing for visitors. Behind the living area is the garden which centers on a large lake. There are many pavilions and buildings around the lake and one pavilion is located on the top of a rockery. The garden is very peaceful and after 2:30 empty. There are ... read more

Tongli Gardens Part 2 This is another of Tongli's gardens. It is quite a bit smaller than the first, but no less beautiful. The main feature of this garden was its large pond and surrounding buildings. What a beautiful way to spend the afternoon! ... read more

The Town of Tongli Part 1 Tongli located outside Suzhou in Jiangsu Province is one of my favorite destinations in China. I loved this village so much! It is so beautiful. It is one of Suzhou's famous Water Towns. There are as many canals in Tongli as their are streets, and the dozens of ancient stone bridges that cross them are each unique and beautiful. We took a bus from the city of Suzhou, which took less than an hour. The bus parked in a huge parking lot for busses, and everybody was let out. We then had to go on foot to Tongli, which took about 40 minutes. We hiked through the countryside through alleyways and over canals to get to the town. The way to the town was really beautiful, and so we got ... read more

Tongli Gardens Part 1 The gardens of Tongli were exquisite. Although not as refined as Suzhou's famous gardens, the gardens here were no less beautiful, and because they are not as famous as Suzhou's, they are far less crowded. Since at 2:30, the tourist busses leave Tongli, the gardens are empty of people in the afternoons. The peacefullness of these gardens combined with their exquisite design, makes them enchanting. The gardens are perfectly designed so that only a small part of them can be viewed at a time, so visitors wandering down their meandering paths have new scenes unfold in front of them as they progress. The buildings of the gardens are beautiful, and are nesttled amongst the ancient trees, and bamboo groves. Many of the small pavilions have girls dressed in traditional costumes playing traditional ... read more

The Town of Tongli Part 2 Upon Entering the main gate, we walked down the narrow lane leading to the town. The lane did not appear touristy at all. There was a little stand selling Baozi (Stemed Stuffed Buns), one where they ground rice into flour, and all along the lane were baskets of drying fish and shrimp. A little further on, there were a few restaurants. After walking along the narrow lane leading into the town, we then entered the town itself. We were stunned by it. It was so beautiful! The entire town is crisscrossed with canals. The canals could be crossed by dozens of ancient stone bridges. Each bridge was unique, and they were all beautifully built. The canals are lined with shops, houses, and restaurants. The buildings are either ancient, or built ... read more

Today the kids and I traveled just an hour by car to another world. We often say we live in a bubble in Shanghai, well today we went to China! Tongli (Tong-lee) is one of many water villages just west of Shanghai. The area is said to be the Venice of the East. The area is flat, and apparently very low, and is covered with water - rivers, canals, ponds, and lakes. People here really live with the water, incorporating it into their daily lives and livelihoods. The water is filled with fishing nets and pearl farms. Tongli is actually an island, with one main entrance. We were dropped off at the outskirts since cars are not allowed in. The area is full of small canals, foot bridges and narrow alleys. We spent the very cold ... read more

Aaahh. Tongli. The perfect water town. Tongli is a small water town about half an hour from Suzhou with a history of over 1,000 years. Forty percent of the houses date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties (that 1368-1644 for those of you who aren't up to date with your Chinese history) It was built around 5 lakes, divided into 7 islands by 15 rivers and connected back together by 49 bridges. Canals everywhere. Water still forms a major role in the lives of its inhabitants. As we walked along the narrow streets we could see people going down to the water to wash their shoes, a rag, a shirt. It was very interesting. Because Tongli is such a pleasant town, it's very busy on the weekends...so, we went on a Monday. Aside from the ... read more

It’s the end of term and I decided to take a few days off and slip away to Suzhou again. However, Suzhou City itself was not the main reason for this visit. Instead, I wanted to visit a small town only 18km away perched on the Eastern shores of Tai Hu (Tai Lake), the town of Tongli. Tongli is a very well preserved water township with a history of over 1000years. I had been told it was well worth exploring here rather than its bigger cousin Zhouzhuang, as it has a similar history and natural scenery but is much less crowded. That’s all I needed to hear! Tongli is divided into seven (7) islands, intersected with about fifteen (15) canals and five (5) lakes. Consequently, almost all of the buildings in town are located along the ... read more
