Welcome to day five of our trip. We are all feeling pretty tired by now and the intense heat doesn't help but we are positive, we have had a good day and we are looking forward to the Guilin trip. Today we had a day in school. We had breakfast and then started the day with a Chinese lesson. This was good as we went over some of the phrases we would need for Guilin which was very useful. This was followed by a lantern making lesson which everyone really enjoyed, firstly we had to bend some bamboo strips in to pentagons and wire them together. We made ten of these and wired them all together to form what we were told was a 'heart shape'. This was as far as we got today because it ... read more

Wow, what an interesting 24 hours we have had out here in China. You'll be glad to know first off that we have won the tug-of-war competition against the Chinese! In fact, we won twice! After that we went to our rooms, got washed, had some dinner then got dressed up for the evenings' events. Nanhai Experimental Middle School put on an extravangent show, in which we performed, Maisie, Emma and Max did some Shakespeare and singing and we all sang along with 'The Rhythm of Life". Mr Harrison was even asked to star in the fashion show with the Chinese teachers! Today we went to Guangzhou and did some shopping and sight seeing. Here's what some of our students said about what we did: "Today was one of the most interesting days,m we weren't at ... read more

Today we had our second day in school. We were all looking forward to our 8 o'clock lie in but at half 6 one of the Chinese students thought he had to get up, much to our annoyance. We had our second Chinese lesson where we learnt useful phrases for our day out tomorrow (not that we'll remember them). The most exciting part of our day so far has been the Chinese paper cutting which everyone got stuck in to and enjoyed. Also watching us was a Chinese camera crew, fliming for the local news on Foshan TV so we are looking forward to our SECOND appearance on Chinese TV which is adding to our new celebrity status. Rosie Amey and Mr Harris were the stars of the show as they were interviewed by the camera ... read more

Hello and welcome to the second day of our travel blog! Here are what some of our students had to say: "The thing I have most enjoyed today is the Kung-Fu lesson. It was really fun and the moves were fairly easy. I was also taught how to hand wash my clothes by Mrs Hylands!" Sophie Chant. Our day started at 7.10am with an opening ceremony on the parade ground where we welcomed by the Principal. The event started with traditional drums, the lion dance and fireworks! we all went on the stage and replied to her welcome in English and Chinese. We then had a really interesting day doing Chinese lessons, learning the art of Calligraphy, and Kung Fu lessons. The Kung Fu lessons were enjoyed by all the students but some students took to it ... read more

The most important trip you may take in life is meeting people halfway. In the summer of 2006 I traveled to China for the very first time in my life. In addition to the technical and vocational challenges that I knew I would face I had a strong desire to get to know the people and culture of China in a much deeper way than just a visit. The people of China have proven to be friendlier and more interested in me (a westerner) than I ever was expecting. Because of that I have learned so much and experienced things I never dreamed of. During my first month in Shunde I would walk the streets almost every day with camera in hand and eyes wide open. Being the only American in a city of 1 million ... read more

Every week in China seems to hold a new adventure and always a unique experience. This week was no exception as we attended an oral English contest with our 14 year old friend Annie. I meet Annie nearly 2 years ago as I was wondering the streets of Shunde taking photos one day. She and her friend approached me and to my surprise began to speak very good English. Annie had a millioin questions including what did I think about Elmo on Sesame Street. She and I have stayed in touch through email and occasional get togethers. She called a couple of weeks ago to request help in preparing for an oral English contest. Janis spent some time helping coach her and yesterday she won the Foshan area division for Junior High students. What a treat ... read more

Guangzhou is to the west of America as Dalian is to the east. People in Guangzhou are relaxed and take time in their lives to truly spend freely. People in Dalian are busy - never have time to do anything but study and work. Guangzhou is full of greenery and has water running through it. Dalian has no greenery and has water running on two sides of it. These are some of the observances I've made today as I have traveled around Guandong a little bit - to parts of Guangzhou, Foshan and Daliang. This morning after getting ready for the day I walked around and found the metro to Yuexiu Park where I walked around for quite some time. There were people relaxing in all different parts of the park. Sitting reading books, dancing with ... read more
