Monday, 22nd April 2019 It was Monday when I decided to join a day tour to the Great Wall sections at Mutianyu, about 75km north of Beijing city. The day tour is the most convenient option since it covered the cost of land transportation, gondola rides, admissions as well as a decent lunch thrown in. Along the way, our guide cautioned that things at Mutianyu might get crowded this morning given that the Forbidden City is closed today. Visitors were expected to throng the walls instead. Amidst the minor transport hiccups in the morning, I thoroughly enjoyed the day excursion. The crowds at the Great Wall were thin (thank god) and clear weather accompanied me throughout the day. We were given about two hours to explore the wall proper to take in the best views of ... read more

Sunday, 21st April 2019 I took a long metro + bus excursion out of Beijing to the Wanping Ancient City this morning. Home to the famed Marco Polo Bridge, this was where World War II officially started in China after Japan waged their aggression across the bridge. Housed within the city walls is the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. This is a huge museum containing lots of information about the War. It really helped that there was a free guided tour when I was there which summarize the information to a more manageable magnitude. China did not officially surrendered during the eight-year war between 1937-1945. After the coastal cities fell to the Japanese in the early part of the campaign, the war eventually reached a stalemate given the strong willpower ... read more

Saturday, 20th April 2019 I started my day with a visit to the Military Museum which was served by a metro station of the same name. By now, I had become accustomed to life in Beijing - bag checks everywhere at the metro entrances as well as at the various attractions. There was always a queue of people ahead of me wherever I go. Unlike most countries that I had visited, there was a need to carry my passport with me everywhere in the city as I needed that to exchange for the admission tickets. The Military Museum occupies the premise of a rather spacious building. The exhibits were however concentrated at the central foyer as well as at a temporary exhibition space displaying photographs of the One Belt, One Road initiative. I noticed that there ... read more

Friday, 19th April 2019 After breakfast on Friday, I took bus service #8 outside my hotel to Qianmen stop where the Tiananmen Square is located. I'm always slightly nervous whenever I'm in crowded places, more so at Tiananmen when I'm surrounded by strangers and we had to go through the security check-points prior to entering the Square. The crowd was considered orderly this morning but the whole process still took a while. I could not imagine how things would be like during the peak holiday season. Anyway, Tiananmen Square like many of the Communist public squares around the world is huge in size. There is a flag pole that takes centre-stage. Across the road from the Square, is the red Tiananmen where the portrait of Mao Zedong stands proudly on the wall gazing at the people ... read more

Thursday, 18th April 2019 It has been five years since my last visit to China. For this trip, I was fortunate to be able to redeem a complimentary ticket to Beijing using my existing air miles. Arrival at the city this afternoon was kind of a cultural shock for me as I soon realised that my Whatsapp and Google Apps were not supported in China. My mistake - I should have done my homework properly. My Singapore Airlines flight was enjoyable as I managed to complete five episodes of the "Yanxi Palace" drama during the flight. I'm now down with the final twenty episodes of the epic drama. Beijing Capital International Airport is connected to the city via the effficient Airport Express (RMB 25). In no time, my train terminated at the Dongzhimen Station where I ... read more

DAY 10 - Although the Temple of Heaven was very interesting, the really big ticket items were still to come on Wednesday. Again we left the hotel early to beat the traffic, a short, illegal park for the coach so we could run (yes, we were told to run, as the driver could receive a ticket), to the top of an overpass to take some quick shots of the Birds Nest Stadium, where the Olympics were held some years back, 2008 I think. So picture this, 18 Aussies running down footpath in Beijing, pushing the locals aside, up the steps the overpass 3 at a time (well, maybe just one at a time, quickly), across to the other side, snap a few quick pics of the Birds Nest, then a leisurely stroll in double double time ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Summer Palace April 11th 2019

When I first visited China many, many years ago, one of the places I really enjoyed in Beijing was the Summer Palace. It was definitely somewhere I wanted to revisit and finally the opportunity arose. I took the subway to Beigongmen Station. That was a bit of a novelty as when I'd visited previously there had been no subway and we'd been at the mercy of taxi drivers, who weren't exactly legit. I headed out if the exit and there were no useful signs here, like there were at the Temple of Heaven, to tell you which way to go. You have to turn back on yourself and walk for about 5 minutes to get to the ticket office. There were several different options for tickets and I went for the through ticket which covered admission ... read more

A rainy day in Beijing was a good excuse to visit a museum. A quick online search came up with the National Art Museum of China, so I headed there. It is really easy to get to and even has its own subway station with an exit right in front of the museum. The museum is free to enter but you must show your passport at the ticket office. I was hoping that I would get a ticket like at the Capital Museum, but not so. Probably for the best as it is a bit of a waste of paper. Since it was raining, I had expected the museum to be really busy, but there weren't too many people. After security, I headed to the entrance, but first I stopped at some sculptures outside. The first ... read more

Food is for me an important part of travelling and living in other cultures. So I generally tend to look for cookery classes and food tours to participate in. In a large city like Beijing there are plenty of options. I attended a few sessions at the Beijing Cooking School, which was formerly known as the Hutong Cuisine Cooking School. It's located in Dengcao Hutong in eastern part of central Beijing. I really like wandering the hutongs and I was happy the cookery school was in a traditional neighbourhood. The building the school is in is nice and it's nice to get a peek around the inside of a house in the hutong. I loved the courtyard and it was a great place to sit and relax and eat all the deliciousness we had created. 5th ... read more

A few months ago, I had done a breakfast eats tour in Beijing. I had really enjoyed it, so vowed to do the evening food tour ran by the same company. It took a while to get round to it, but I eventually did. The group met by the subway station so it was easy to find. I think there were about 11 of us on the tour and we had two guides with us. The guides were lovely, super friendly and knowledgeable. It was great to hear their stories as well as the information about the food, restaurants, and China in general. We headed off into the hutongs to our first stop. Hutongs are the old traditional neighbourhoods in Beijing, but the word actually come from Mongolian, when Kublai Khan invaded China. The original word ... read more
