I woke up this morning with a headache, an upset stomach and a slight fever. I think I may have overdone it this weekend. But I had such a great time! I’m glad you all are enjoying the pictures. Speaking of pictures, I took a couple of the rising sun this morning. It was such a beautiful sight. I think that the haze here has the same effect as the haze in LA, providing spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
When I got to work we jumped right into the chemistry. We were doing some tricky experiments that required some very careful handling. It became evident within a couple of hours that we were successful and everyone was relaxed and happy the rest of the day. . .working hard, but confident that we were generating some great data. I know this will sound really nerdy, but I absolutely love being in lab. I was telling a good friend of mine that the best time of the day for me are those early morning hours when I’m in the lab by myself. . .just me and my reactions. Okay. . .maybe that’s my second favorite time of the day.
My favorite time of the day is going out to Happy Hour after work and drinking margaritas with my friends.
When lunchtime came around I found out that they had had the cook in the cafeteria prepare a special meal for Danbo and me. There was a table set aside with a ‘reserved’ sign. . .I assume it was a ‘reserved’ sign. . .it was written in Chinese. On the table were beautiful dishes of every kind. Everyone else in the cafeteria had the standard ‘hot meal of the day’. I felt kind of embarrassed from all the extra attention, but I know they were showing me how much they’ve enjoyed working with me and Danbo. The food was amazing and the cook came out to see if we liked it. Since he didn’t speak English I just smiled and pointed and the food and rubbed my belly while making “Mmmmm” sounds. He got the message and walked away with a huge smile on his face.
After lunch I was starting to feel better. My headache had gone away completely. This evening I still feel a little tired but almost back to normal. During a break later in
Wendy Noodles
Wendy Noodles have green onions, scrambled eggs, shrimp, rice noodles and some magical seasoning of some kind. the day Lavinia, Danbo and Amy helped me pick out a Chinese name for myself. . .Qiaoling. It’s pronounced in two parts. . .and sounds like Chaw Ling. It means beautiful, smart girl. . .of course! Lavinia came up with a bunch of names for me, but I couldn’t pronounce some of them. I didn’t want to risk picking one of those. It might mean something else when I mispronounce it. I would think I was introducing myself as “Lovely Flower” when really I was saying “Hello my name is Stinky Feet”. I think as most of you know I am especially skilled at humiliating myself in public in new and creative ways. So the chances of the above mentioned introduction happening were pretty high.
After work we went to that little restaurant that serves the “Wendy Noodles”. I am something of a ‘celebrity’ there now. After our meal one of the waitresses came up and asked how to welcome someone back to the restaurant in the future (in English). . .I told her to say “Please, come back again”. I’m sure everyone will have learned that phrase by the time I go to that restaurant again. Everyone there
is so sweet and genuinely friendly. Oh! And I got a picture of a Chinese beer. It’s a beer that is brewed in the Beijing area. It’s a very light lager and goes well with spicy food.
Alright. . .it’s past my bedtime. Bye for now!
