In mid-December we caught an early morning bus from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville on the coast of Southern Cambodia. Gerry decided to buy a baquette filled with cold meat from a street vendor at the bus station - big mistake! 24 hours later, full scale diarrhoea! Fortunately no sickness, and after a day he was eating as well as ever. Sihanoukville is a bit shabby and is spread out across a number of beaches. We stayed in the Mealy Chenda Guesthouse above Victory Beach with a lovely view out to sea, particularly at sunset. They do a wicked barbequeue evening where you cook you're own food on a charcoal stove on your table. The sunsets on the beach are also worth beholding. The sun sets around 6pm, after which we would head for a great little ... read more

I spent about a week in Cambodia, two full days in and around Phnom Penh, most of a day heading up the Tonle Sap to Siem Reap, and four full days to explore the temples. I enjoy the spicy food, aromatic markets, and crazy cab rides through Bangkok but after merely two days I was glad to be hopping a flight to Phnom Penh. The City is extremely chilled; people watching along the riverside, praying at the Wats, exploring the markets and tasting the strange foods, sketching in the Nat'l Museum or dining on amok, a coconut curry dish with local river-fish served in a coconut and washed down with Angkor beer. One afternoon, a young student moonlighting as a moto driver took me south along Route 2 to Phnom Chisor. What a great little adventure. ... read more

We took the bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh (the capital of Cambodia), the guidebook said it would take about 8 or 9 hours. After about 5 hours we came to what we thought was a provincial town. When we asked if we were stopping for a break we were promptly informed that we were in the centre of Phnom Penh! It was not at all what we were expecting, normally in capital cities there are high rise office blocks and millions of people and heavy car traffic, here it was relatively quiet with wide boulevards and old French colonial architecture. We stayed at a lovely clean little place called Cozyna Hotel overlooking the river Tonle Sap. There are lots of great little cafes and restaurants along here, including the Foreign Correspondents Club, which quickly ... read more

We wasted no time in heading for the Temples of Angkor, the day after we flew into Siem Reap. We stayed at Earthwalkers, a cool place run by Norwegians. We bought a 3 day ticket (not cheap at $40 each, but I'm sure the money's needed) and we hired a tuk tuk (a fancy 2-person bogey pulled by a motorbike) and driver for the day. 'Angkor' literally means 'Capital City' or 'Holy City'. 'Khmer' refers to the dominant ethnic group in modern and ancient Cambodia. The term 'Angkor' has come to refer to the capital city of the Khmer Empire that existed in this area of Cambodia between the 9th and 12th centuries AD, as well as to the empire itself. There are loads of temples covering a vast area. The main temple is Angkor Wat, ... read more

Cambodia has been interesting to say the least. Our first experience of Cambodia was the border. Apparently unless you have a guide to bribe the officier behind the desk to stamp your passport, you can not get out of Vietnam. We waited for a good couple of hours in the 40 plus heat, not impressed. After a bumpy bus ride we made it to the capital, phnom penh. The next day we headed off to the Killing Fields, a very sobering experience. Approximately 2 million cambodians were executed in the late 1970's by the Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot. We also visited the S-21 prison where thousands of people were held and tortured before their deaths. The pictures on display of these poor people left a lasting impression on us. We found it unbelievable that ... read more

I’ve just spent the week in Phnom Penh, a city I love. It’s small and easy to get around, the restaurants have great food and beautiful décor, great atmosphere - far superior to Bangkok’s restaurants - the wine doesn’t have a tax of 400% like in Bangers, the Cambodian people I’ve met are friendly, the motodops (motor-taxi drivers) charge us foreigners double what they would a Cambodian with a smile and there’s a sense of justice about it, and the roads are scenes of hilarious chaos. The rules for driving in Cambodia can be summarised as follows: 1) stopping must be avoided at all costs - for eg., if you are turning from the far side of the road, you slowly make your way onto the opposite side of road, facing oncoming traffic and then turn ... read more
