In the past two days we've vistited two sites linked to the genocidal acts commited by the Khmer Rouge under Pot Pols regime between 1975 and 1979. First we visited the Toul Sleng prison, also known as S21 or Security Station 21, and secondly we visited the killing fields, some of the mass graves where victims from Toul Sleng were executed and buried. S21 was an amazing, and at the same time disgusting place to visit. It was a high school converted into a prison. Some of the class rooms are divided into very very tiny brick or wood cells, while other class rooms are used for torture and interrogation, and other classrooms were group cells, where dozens of prisoners would be forced to lie on the ground, shackled to bars. And the people who were ... read more

Now, after having lived in Phnom Penh for a bit more than a week, something quite odd has become appearent to me. In Sihanoukville, some of the local shops would after a while lower their prices for you, basically showing that there are two official prices, one for foreigners and one for Khmers. Of course, the first time you come around they will all quote you the foreigner's price, but after a while you got the Khmer price, which showed good business sense. But something else is happening in Phnom Penh. Maybe they are just more stupid up here. I normally buy water every day at the corner shop where I live. But, one day they told me that the price had increased with 20 per cent. I didn't really think much about it, since prices ... read more

We arrived in Phomn Penh yesterday afternoon. We took a bus and had no real idea how long the trip was supposed to take. It turned out to take only about 6 hours with stops. The bus we were on was filled mostly with Cambodian people, and only about 6 tourists. Despite what seat number our bus ticket said, all the tourists were sent to the back of the bus, or over the wheel wells, it was an uncomfortable trip. We arrived in Phomn Penh to insanity. As soon as I got off the bus I was swarmed by dozens of drivers trying to get me to go to their guest house. When Coral got off the bus we couldn't even get close to each other, too many people yelling for our attention. Eventually I just ... read more

Hello! After hanging out in Chang Mai for a couple of weeks, including a 3 day trip to Pai, I headed South to good old Bangkok where I landed on the (Thai) night bus, caught a public bus for 4baht and eventually got some snooze between 8am and 10am... I then dashed around doing bits before collecting Mum from the airport... how bizaarrre! Mum and I met Kate and her Mum and had a good couple of days and evenings - saw some sights and drank cocktails at Vertigo; the roof top bar of the very classy Banyan Tree Hotel. The second evening we ate dinner by the river, after spending hours searching for a cafe Kate had read about, which we eventually found, down a sneaky side alley that you çouldn't miss'?! Kate and her ... read more

I am indulging in one of the many delights of being overseas - traveler romance - and so am currently touring a small section of Southern Cambodia with Eddie, a cerebral Glaswegian. Well, we had an adventure-packed day boating through some mangroves to a tropical island of white sand beaches where we swam and ate freshly grilled barracuda for lunch. I almost had a slimy encounter with a giant (yes giant) jelly fish. Eeuuuk! Then we walked through some jungle (it's a National Park but of course there is heaps of illegal logging and poaching) tracing the steps of many before us. Even though the area was a Khmer Rouge hide-out, there are no landmines. Thankfully. There were no monkeys or elephants to be seen either. Sadly. We arrived at the other side - after passing ... read more

The other day I went to lunch with a local friend of mine. We went to this nice little restaurant adown at the beach, and there were only locals around and about four chickens running around pecking at the dirt. After being seated, or in my case, being hamocked, and exchanged pleasantries with the staff, we got around to order. Taking my friend’s advice we decide on a whole roast chicken and beers. The preparation does take quite some time, but we pass the time with comments about the beach and sipping our not-so-cold beers. Not until the roast chicken find its way over to our table does it suddenly occur to me… were there not four chickens here when we arrived, packing happily around at the ground. Looking around and doing some quick calculations on ... read more

The boat eased up to the dock. It was jammed with Cambodian taxi drivers. There must have been thirty of them. But today was not going to be a good day. There were only ten tourists coming from Sihanoukville to the border with Thailand. As soon as the boat tied up the frenzy began. Hundreds of hands grabbed our bags. Trying to get them off the boat and onto a motorbike before the tourists could take them. Ours was on the bottom of a big pile and by the time we got off the boat there were taxi drivers pulling at the straps of our bags trying to drag them away. Those that weren’t grabbing for the bags were grabbing us by the arms and tugging at our shirts. It was one of the most desperate ... read more

I have finally decided that there is no future for me in this town, and after some thoughtful nights, had come to the conclusion that Vietnam might offer a better life, both money-wise, work-wise, and not the least food-wise. So, I get around to all my friends here to say my goodbyes and to collect my share of e-mail addresses. Finally I get to Bamboo Light, which in the two months I have been here, have become my regular hangout joint. I talk to the owner, and tell him that I am leaving now, that there wasn’t enough work for me here, so I am off to Vietnam next week. The next thing I know, he has called up a friend in Phnom Penh, and I am told to prepare my CV and go to Phnom ... read more

"I was going to the worst place in the world and I didn't even know it yet. He was close. He was real close. I couldn't see him yet, but I could feel him. As if the boat were being sucked up the river and the water was flowing back into the jungle. Whatever was going to happen, it wasn't going to be the way they call it back in Nha Trang." Ok, I'm not losing my mind or heavy into opium at the time of this writing. I'm only reciting quotes from a movie. If you don't know this movie, I am sorrowful for you but will give you a hint...it's from Apocolypse Now. So, after taking 5 different boats and 3 different busses over two days, my journey up the Mekong River and crossing ... read more

Well it's just short of two weeks since I left Oz, and I've just spent a week of that on the coast of Cambodia swimming, relaxing and generally enjoying life. However, I am starting to realise how poor Cambodia is, how corrupt the government is and how inept many of the NGOs are at making real change here. The killing of innocent Cambodians - mainly squatters or poor families whose land is sought after - by police is quite common. Today I had a life-altering experience. I met up with Lee, a Canadian woman with whom I visited an orphanage the last time I was here, and she invited me to go with her and a handful of other Westerners to Phnom Penh's garbage dump. Marcel, a German guy, described it as kindergarten compared to the ... read more
