Well Cambodia what can i say.. alot actually beautiful people after all they have been through but still effectively a third world country. They haven't actually heard of bins. the street is the local tip and with the heat you can imagine the aromas. When we arrived there were lots of people covered in white dust (working in the mines I hear you say) I thought the same but actually it was Khmer new year and it is tradition to run up to people and put talc on other peoples faces, which I learnt the hard way. All in good fun. The driving is crazy over here no traffic lights, road markings or mirrors on bikes. It's just bedlam. You fear for your life when you're tuk-tuk driver is crossing the road. When we asked do you have ... read more

Koh Kohn After a hurried farewell to Earth, I was on the ferry back to the mainland, and after a lot of confusion, I was on my way to Koh Kohn (Thai/Cambodia border). I didn’t even know anything that was going on, and I was to only non-local traveler in the van. It turned out, that all I needed for my safe delivery to Phnom Phen was a flimsy little white paper that had a number and the words “Phnom Phen,” which had been given to me by the Thai travel agency I had used. Getting to Koh Kohn, the border town in Cambodia, and finding my prepaid guesthouse was a disaster, and I was super paranoid to the “dangers and hoodlums that lurked in the streets,” which was my scared American perception of the ... read more

It was 7 weeks since we'd seen a beach!! Shocking we know. It was the Buddhist New Year whilst we were in Sihanoukville so the place was rammed with Khmer families celebrating. They love the sea and once in they don't really get out for the rest of day, way after it gets dark anyway. They also like to swim fully clothed. Something to do with decency we're sure but it's quite funny to see them turn up in their new outfit of jeans and jacket and then just jump in! A big surprise here was that our accomodation was free!! We stayed with a family who run one of the beach shacks. ... read more

Well, it's been a long time since my last blog, but don't be peeved, you haven't really missed much. Anyway, here are pictures from my stay here, or at least from the last time my camera got nicked. Now, my camera has only got nicked, but that doesn't mean it can't be nicked again. Unfortunately, in this country having any kind of possession is a bit like a Russian roulette. Most of the time you are lucky and all your possessions are still yours, but that doesn't mean that you don't know that given enough time someone will eventually lighten you of some of your worldly possessions. The upside of this is that you don't really get too attached to mere things. Although I reckon that Buddha didn't really have theft in mind as a way ... read more

Our final day in Siem Reap was exausting, so Emily and I decided we would have an early night, catch some Saturday night films, and get some extra shut eye before we'd have to wake up for our 8:30 am bus to Phnom Penh. This didn't work out as well as we had planned. The Canadian we had met up with at the temples wanted to tell us about his six months in Australia, anmd help us out with geting jobs once we arrived. Wewere so into the convo, that when we finally decided to go home, it was already 1:30 AM! On our way home, there was this little 6 year old girl begging for money. I stopped and told her I wouldn't give her money, but I would buy her some food if she ... read more

Daddy i shot a tommy gun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In Cambodia you can pay money and shoot guns. Jeff bought a clip of bullets for an AK 47. I didnt shoot this one because it looked like it had alot of kick and would hurt my shoulder. Jason bought a ring of bullets for a tommy gun so i shot 2 bullets. hahah i didnt even aim i had my eyes closed. and i got to wear an army print jacket. we got pictures. oh and there was another guy there that threw a hand grenade into a swamp. it didnt make a very big splash but it honestly shook the ground and made a huge noise. what i'm about to say is a little disturbing... we also went to the Tuol Sleng genocide museum. from about 1975 to ... read more

Great city. As asian capitals go we thought Phnom Penh was up there leading the pack. Loads to do, some great bars, not much hassle and very very cheap... We spent a day just wandering the streets soaking it all up. Had a look at some sights, Wats, Museum etc. Lapped up some tasty street food and popped into the Foriegn Correspondence Club for a bevvie or two (all free thanks to some guys from Middlesborough who's names we've sadly forgotton!). Loved the whole french feel to the riverside. The 2nd day wasn't as much fun. We did the tour around the nearby Killing Fields and the S21 Prison from the Khmer Rouge days. Pretty gruesome stuff but a very interesting day. Could have stayed longer here but the Buddhist NY was approaching and the city ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Kampot April 9th 2006

We spent just under a week in the Kampot area. Kampot itself was not a very interesting place but nearby was the deserted french hill station of Bokor. It was abandoned back in the 70's and was then used for numerous battles between the Khmer Rouge/Cambodian Army/Vietnamese. Quite a spooky place as you can walk around the old hotel and casino. It also felt a lot like Scotland when the cloud came in! Also nearby were some great waterfalls and spots on the river for a swim. Kep is a nearby town which had a "beach", wouldn't really want to swim there though. Kep is famous for its Crab though so we stopped off for a huge plate of pepper crab at one of the hundreds of picnic stalls that line the back of the beach. ... read more
