So the second day I was in Sihanoukville it rained pretty much all day with the odd period of dry weather. In the morning I managed to take a walk along the local beach which was about 10 minutes done the hill. It was a lovely white sandy beach, but sadly it was rather dirty from stuff that had been washed up,on the shore line. I had a walk up to the pier and back before heading back up the hill to get some breakfast. Whilst chomping on egg on tots and a big plate of fruit the heavens opened up again and that was pretty much it for the day. During one less rainy periods I managed to make it back to the hostel where I spent most of the day reading, writing my blogs and sending emails Nd checking out face book, oh and catching up on my sleep lol.
Later in the afternoon I headed to the all nations bar where I bumped into Charlie and some of his mates. The scene looked just like one from the UK, all thesis older men sitting around drinking and getting stoned. You could see the ruddy complexions
from months or may be years of drinking and their eyes rolling and slurred speech from too much wacky baccy. All quite sad I thought. Charlie said he'd decided to take the day off so I didn't need to work that night.
I stayed for a couple of ciders and watched some touring cars racing or something and then headed off for food as they stop serving food at 5pm! Food consumed, some F1 watched I headed back to my room. I had decided to move accommodation the next day to the down town area where hopefully there were more back packers, bars and restaurants etc.
The next morin ing over breakfast I was just looking into accommodation options when I message popped up on FB from Alex, Gaby and Georgia saying they were still on the island of Koh Rong and to come over. So I headed back to my digs to arrange a ticket for the fast ferry and tuk tuk to the departure point. I had already packed so didn't need to worry about that.
The tuk tuk arrived at 2pm and we drove to the dive centre
in town which was running the ferry. There were about 30 or so people waiting and we all piled on the bus complete with our bags. There were also some locals heading back to the island. I sat next to a girl who it turned out was from Canada who was called Amy and was travelling on her own. We chatted on the way down to the docks and then all piled off the bus and walked up to the speed ferry. I say the speed ferry as it takes bout 40 minutes to get over rather than the slow boat which takes a couple of hours or so.
The rain was coming in and then wind had arrived and the sea was rather choppy. Once everyone had negotiated getting on board and the bags etc were stowed we headed out to sea. At first the crossing was going ok but soon we got in to rougher waters and the ferry took a few dives as large waves crashed over us. All I thought about was the film Perfect Storm with George Cloony. Dramatic as ever lol.
But the plastic windows all around to
keep the water out gave way a little in places as the Velcro and zips gave up against Mother Nature and people sitting in the seats were soaked by sea water and had to move. We did think it was funny but some of us were a bit concerned and did fear for our safety. At one point one of the crew reached for a life jacket but I think it was his way of relieving the tension which had built up. Suffice to say we reached the island safe and sound and very relieved.
I asked Amy if she fancied looking for accommodation together as usually it's cheaper and neither of us had anything booked, and she agreed it was a good idea. As we were coming off the pier I could hear my name being called, it was Alex so we headed to the bar where the girls were to say hello and have a quick catch up. Amy and I then headed to find some accommodation.
We were stopped by an American guy Josh who told us about the place just behind him, he pushed the sea view, and it did
as it was built on stilts over the shore line. We have a 2 x doubled bed room with fan and shared bathrooms. We get breakfast and free beer between 4 and 5 in the afternoon all for $9 each a night. So I may be staying here for a few days lol. The leccy goes off around midnight and doesn't kick in again until 4.30pm the next day. I have to say it's very hot in the room even with the windows open and a sea breeze so I didn't get much sleep. Some of the bars have their own generators so keep going until 2am. It's laid back and a place to,chill, out. In during the day and in the evening the bars play music so,we get a mixture of music melting together - a proper mash up lol.
Xx
