Well readers it's been a while since my last blog. Basically because I wasn't up to much just sunbathing on a tropical island - it's a dirty job but someone has to do it. :-)
I shared a room with Amy ( the girl I met on the bus/ boat going over to Koh Rong) for a couple of days at the sea view guest house and then she she headed back to the mainland, so I moved to the island villas which wasn't such a nice place but did have a bathroom in the room rather than a shared one round the corner lol. I amused myself by sun bathing and eating out had having a few drinks and an early night. I decided to leave the island on the Saturday and head back to the mainland and stay for a couple of days at the monkey republic hostel in Sihanouk Ville and then make my way back to Kampot ready to be picked up by the stray bus.
As I was waiting for the 10am ferry I bumped in to Maria who was a German girl Amy and I had chatted to at
our guest house. She was staying for a few day on the island and had had a bit of a holiday romance bless her. Like me she was heading back to the mainland, and she was then going back to Paxay where she was teaching English to Cambodian school children.
She ended up speaking to another girl (Karolein) who was waiting for the ferry and also from Germany. When the ferry arrived we all sat together. The ferry made a couple of stops at other islands to drop people off and pick them up. Finally after 2 hours we finally got back to Sihanouk Ville port.
It was all a bit crazy getting off the ferry as they had to turn it around as fast as possible. We grabbed our bags and my plan was to head to the bus that had brought us to the ferry originally and check in at the hostel which was just over the road. Karolin was asking me what I planned to do. She was a little skeptical as she had stayed in a hostel in Sihanouk Ville before visiting the island, so I said to come with
me, check out the place I had in mind and it it wasn't to her liking she could head off into the city. Taking the bus back also meant we didn't have to suffer another tuk tuk ride and the bus back was free and would drop us off near the hostel I was heading for, and she agreed it was a plan.
We had to stand up on the bus as it was full but it was only a ten minute ride back so it wasn't too bad. We hopped of the and walked over to the hostel called monkey republic. We went to see the room which was luxury lol a nice bathroom, comfy beds with clean white bedding and a fan and electricity which stays on 24 hours lol. So we took it of course!
The hostel also had a bar/restaurant so I enjoyed a tuna baguette and banoffee Pie!!! After food we headed into to town to stock up on supplies, have a wander and so that Karolein could buy a new mobile phone as her phone got water logged when it fell in the sea (long story). Mission accomplished.
I had them take a look at my phone too but he couldn't do anything with it so it will have to be sent back to the UK when I work out how to get in touch with virgin mobile - they don't make it easy. If you have lost your phone or had it stolen you have tomcats them, how exactly if the phone is no longer in my possession?!
Any way mission accomplished for Karolein so we headed back to the hostel for food. Whilst there I had a quick catch up with Hannah who was my roomy in Vang Vieng. She had an awesome time in Vietnam so I'm looking forward to going there myself.
Karolein and I took a minibus with others back to Kep and then arranged to head over to rabbit island (Koh Tunsay). It's a small island where they only have leccy between 5pm and 12 midnight and no wifi and huts as accommodation. The 'ferry' wasn't until 3pm so we took a walk along the beach and had some food. We were taken to the ferry point by tuk tuk and headed to the pier to
board the boat.
It was rather windy and the rain looked to be coming in, the boat was rocking rather precariously on the water and we were starting to have second thoughts about going over to the island, but it was a little tool ate to turn back now. I managed to put my iPad camera and iPod in a plastic bag just before getting on the boat. Joining us was a woman and her two teenage daughters. They sat at the back of the boat and Karolein and I sat in the middle with our ruck sacks stowed at the front and we headed off to the island.
Oh error! The boat was rocking like it was a bout to tip over, spray and waves were coming over the bough of the boat and from both sides. We were all getting soaked as were ruck sacks and we had to get a kid jacked to,put over out hand luggage, no we didn't bother to,put one on before we set off, that would be far to logical lol. I have to say I did have visions of us being thrown off the boat into
the water and all my possessions sinking to the bottom of the sea! However luck and other positive things were on our side and we finally made it after 20 minutes of scariness, ive never been so relieved to see dry land lol.
So soaking wet with wet bags we headed off into the island following the path. After about 10 minutes or so we took a fork in the path (after asking a local guy) and came across the beach villas and luckily they had space, luckily as this was the only accommodation location on the island. We each had a bungalow and I had to take all the stuff out of my ruck sack to dry it out. It was hung up,on every free space I could find lol, the mosquito net, hooks, hammock etc. it looked like widow tw ankles wash house lol.
There was no shower only a large blue drum of rain water used to flush the loo by hand. The bed was ok and had a mosquito net over it. The power came on at 5pm and went off around 11pm, no fan or AC. It was very
hot and I did find it difficult to sleep.
Once unpacked and dried out is changed into dry clothes and we headed for the beach which was about 20 meters away lol. We ordered a smoothies and sat on sun lingers and read our books and drank our smoothies with only the sound of the sea for company.
After a couple of hours the sun faded to be replaced by clouds and the wind had got up,again, a sure sign that rain was on it's way. So we headed off to get a foot massage for an hour which was amazing and very relaxing:-)
We then headed back to our bungalows for some chill time and then met again later for tea and a chat and some drinks and then an early night. We were debating what time to catch the boat the next day and decided to see what the weather brought ...............
More to come :-)
