Today we mostly stood up to our necks in the sea, or at least we did this morning. This afternoon it was a bit rough for that, but a beautiful sunny day despite the weather reports saying rain.
We slept OK, although for me the sea was quite loud and penetrated my earplugs. Not particularly lulling. And all our stuff felt damp in the hut, but at least we had no bites. The electricity came on last night and we could charge our stuff, nothing overheated. The hut is very gappy but hopefully we get a bit more breeze through because of it. It doesn’t look like they use tape measures much when building, it’s all very rustic and charming. The so-called sand flies are around and look like mozzies with long tails. We are spraying ourselves all the time.
We had breakfast on our jetty and the sea was calm, the sky blue and flying fish were hopping about in the sea, really fab. So was the scrambled egg, bacon and toast with Lipton tea. It makes us sweat but we love it. 5$ each, probably cheaper than I was expecting. There are some places in the village
which are a bit cheaper but we are scared of their kitchens. Then we walked through the village to book a table at Eat, Pray, Love, the Italian place with their own pizza oven. Charming French guy there, a few of them already busy in the kitchen. We walked on to buy more mozzie spray, the orange can ‘Off’, 5$, has deet but smells OK. There is a bar called Tortuga round on the headland where ‘fun’ can apparently be had so we went to check it out. We found it, obviously no fun is to be had at 9am, and the walk there goes over the shonkiest bridge crossing the stinky lagoon outlet, plastic bin bags of rubbish floating lazily out to sea. Sad face! We walked past some local people’s houses, saying hello. Of all the kids we saw, very few were in school uniform and on their way there, although school is free. I’d say only 25% of the kids were on their way there. There are lots of unspayed dogs and loads of cute puppies as a consequence. Most look well looked after with collars, not skinny, but scratching all the time and hopping with fleas.
The dogs on the beach were VERY badly behaved with each other. Eugh!
We parked ourselves on sunbeds with parasols outside the Moon Restaurant on the beach. We bought drinks but nobody bothered us. Prices were normal more or less. I went snorkelling around the jetty but there wasn’t a huge amount to see. We were thinking of going on a snorkel trip in the afternoon one day but when we were in the shop and the guy was explaining it he showed a picture of the shoes they provide so you can stand on the coral for a rest. But, we said, that kills the coral, you should never stand on it. But, he said, the customer complain he feet cut. So we were not keen, also because the wind gets up in the afternoon and the fishing element of the trip would involve a lot of bobbing up and down on the boat. We are not good with that. Then you barbecue the fish you caught, probably zero barbecuing would therefore happen in our case. So we won’t go, maybe do another afternoon trip in Otres.
When we got back to the hut no sweeping of
sand had been done but someone had left a brush, happy to do it ourselves. Basically you sweep it down through the cracks in the floor onto the beach below. Not particularly happy that the toilet paper bin hadn’t been emptied. Sam tied it up and I waved it about at one of the girls who pointed to reception, so I waved it in that direction also and was given a new bag. Hmmmm.
We went to the pizza place early as we were hungry and I’d finished doing a hastily written quiz with the 3 boys staying here. Questions suitable for ages 10, 8 and 5. The seating is upstairs with a lovely view and our table was a low one with round wicker chairs they have all over on the beaches here. Very comfy for lounging in, ok for eating pizza, pasta would have been more of a challenge. We had 2 glasses of prosecco at 4$ a glass, bruschetta to share and a pizza each, total bill was 36$. It was very good and there were lots of people we’d seen on the beach in the day, it being such a small place. Geckos in the
toilet, we were very happy, and Sam had her photo taken with the hunky, tattooed chef, so it was a great evening all round.
