Last night we dined in, or rather ate on our balcony. It was barbecue night and we were most attracted by the food, in particular the mashed potato. It didn’t disappoint, nor did the buffalo steak. Absolutely delicious and only 5.50$. We are so happy we’ll be back here next Thursday for more of the same. There was a DJ playing chill out tunes but we couldn’t hear from inside our bungalow. Then I had my daily struggle with the mosquito net, tearing a 6 inch hole in it while I tried to tuck it in and have enough left to actually close it. I am rubbish. I had to start again, while Sam scoffed from inside her perfect one. It’s quite a ritual, organising all your overnight items inside, technology, earphones, water, remote for the air on, glasses, charger.
Today we went on a great snorkel day. The included breakfast had a few choices, perfectly acceptable, but when I asked for butter on the toast it came separately and the eggs were already in situ. Bless! We were picked up by Holly, our guide for the day and walked over to the beach, waded knee high to the boat
and up the ladder. Only 6 of us. Then we went to Otres 2 where another 2 got on, then the boat was pretty full and lowish in the water when away from the shore. To be honest, the visibility wasn’t great until the last site of 3, and then only because the sun decided to come out. The first place had a lot of dead coral and not too much to see. The other problem was that despite looking to see which boat was ours when getting to the water they had moved around a lot and so after deciding to go back I had no idea which boat it was. Caramba! They all looked the same. So I swam down to the last one and worked my way along, hoping to recognise someone. There was a considerable drift that way, so I was quite knackered when I got back. Luckily I recognised one of the boat guy’s stripey jumper. Sam had the same problem but she saw me. We are going to struggle getting dressed tomorrow, poor aching arms. Triceps buggered, basically.
It was grey and gloomy, so a bit cold afterwards on our way to Koh
Ta Kiev. And the waves were bigger than ideal for so may people in a long-tail boat. They had to slow down a bit as we crested the waves and dropped down the other side. No one seemed bothered, least of all the jolly Russians drinking whisky. They were so nice, jumped up to drag me onto the boat after each snorkel stop. This was helpful as it was not easy. The ladder only just dipped into the water, so you had to get your foot up by your ear and then haul yourself up. It was Ok, I’m good for a few more years of it!
We stopped at an amazing beach and the water was so warm. Walked round to the bar/restaurant/resort, which sounds grand but so wasn’t. See pics- it’s called Ten 103 and has rooms in trees and the budget option of a hammock with mozzie net and little roof. The tree house rooms looked fairly budget too but it was super super cool. The bar served food which looked great, slightly more expensive due to everything coming in by boat, 6-7$ for a main course. There were piles of rubbish behind the beach, small
ones. We sat on the beach and had our included lunch. Not great but hey, they fed 30 people nearly, a plate with a baguette, dried up salad and some freshly cooked chickeN. We sort of made a sandwich out of it. There were a few other boats but not too many, little starfish and hermit crabs pottering about, really warm water. Lovely!
Then we motored round to the cliff jump. It was about 25 feet high. Sam jumped off the boat and swam over to the lip you have to climb onto, slippery and carbunkled. Loads of people climbed up and jumped off, in varying degrees of promptness. I had a Swedish lady’s phone to catch her in action, then Sam worked her way to the front, dithered, lost her nerve and went to the back of the queue. Hid in the bushes for a while, repeated. I kept videoing her on my phone, deleting and trying again. This happened 5 times. She was the last up there. Then gave up and climbed back down. She just couldn’t get her head round it. We were all willing her on from the boat. No matter!
We went to
one last snorkel stop. By this time the sun was out so we could see a lot better. The coral was much better preserved but v v v close to the surface, so I had to suck everything in and motor over the shallow bits using toes only. The urchins were huge and spike and much nearer than normal. I saw a humongous puffer fish. Honestly, it was about 60cm long, huge eyes, amazing. Anenomes but no clown fish. It was the best stop of the day we got back at 4.30, this time into thigh deep water and we ,ore or less had to carry our stuff on our heads while we waded back to the shore. It was a great time, really good price, nice company, we loved it.
