Ok, just a brief note to all out there. I can no longer be reached on my tiscali.no email, because Telenor has taken over tiscali.no, and of course deleted everything. So, if you have sent me a message within the past weeks or so, please resend it to tink_kim@hotmail.com Besides that, I am having a good time, I have gotten myself a motorbike, so I am very mobile. Cool. More later.... read more

I can’t believe I am in Cambodia. Sometimes on the trip I felt like I was riding the dirt bike through Apocalypse Now and it is hard to believe its real. This is my first real experience in a third world country and it really hits hard. You always hear things about most of the world living on less than a dollar a day but somehow it doesn’t hit home until you are here, and I know I am still on the outside of it. I was talking with a local who kindly offered my some of his deep fried frogs. He is a civil engineer working for the government, which is a pretty good job. He said his salary is $25. I clarified, “per day. Right?” ”No, Per month.” he replied. Ouch, I felt like ... read more

The river journey and border crossing was surprisingly painless and in five hours we had arrived in Phnom Penh. We were not even allowed to disembark the boat before being hassled and yelled at to stay in this or that guest house or to take this tuk tuk or that taxi! Finally we made a decision and asked to be taken to a hotel of our choice only to be told that it had closed! Thinking that this was another scam our driver took us to the (closed) hotel and then drove us to one that he recommended - it was ok so we stayed after negotiating a price. After looking at the LP for a recommended restaurant we set off to look for it. Eventually we walked into the place that we thought it was ... read more

Thailand was great and Koh Samui was my favourite place there. It was very beautiful but as tempting as it was for us to stay longer we decided to press on into Cambodia and I am very glad we did. Crossing the border (we made our own way accross the land border to Poipet via a veeerrry long train, bus and 'tuk-tuk' journey) was quite an intimidating experience and also like stepping back in time about a hundred years as the roads and taxis gave way to dusty tracks and ox carts but as soon as we arrived in Battambang, our first base, I fell in love with the place! It's a cliche but the people really are so nice and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere is exactly what I think has been touristed out of Thailand. ... read more

I arrived in Phnom Penh yesterday and I have been on the whirlwind tourist circuit ever since. I am staying at Okay Guesthouse - the sister guesthouse of the place I stayed at in Siem Reap. It's got a nice backpackers atmosphere. They assigned me a moter-bike driver right away which was nice yesterday but it's now kind of annoying me. The poor guy is supposed to look-after me during my entire stay it seems. Every time I come downstairs he hands me the menu and tries to get me to order food from the house restaurant. If decline he hounds me about where I want to go and I know he's watching my every move. Luckily I met my Irish friends here so we are all in the same boat with the over-attentive motorbike drivers. ... read more

As I leave the SE Asian leg of travels for Spain, I have to say a huge cheers.. or dual moi to all the people that made those few months invaluable and awesome! A few that do not appear however in the limelight in the photos are Matt, Nick & Nev (all very allusive for photos when sober!... and the ones from the nights out I think can be sent through personally to ya!) A big thanks to you all (particularly Matt) for being so very welcoming and taking me on to help out at Phnom Tamao.. you are doing awesome things there and I hope to come back when this journey is over to check it all out again.. particularly in the wet season! like that makes a difference in the forever dry spot that ... read more

i just got back on sunday night from a medical mission to Prey Veng in Cambodia. just wanted to share a few words about our experience. everytime i go overseas and return home i always joke about having to come back to the real world here in Singapore. but this trip was a complete reversal coz i've seen a glimpse of what the REAL world was during our mission out at Kampong Leav, Prey Veng. it was really an eye-opening (and heart-opening) experience to see for myself what the poorer people in cambodia are facing daily. we saw a spectrum of villagers from a family of 7 surviving on 15 US cents per day to reasonably comfortable ones who could show us blood and ultrasound reports from the city hospitals and more affluent ones toting handphones ... read more
