Before I came to Cambodia, I confess that I knew very little about Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. I remember vague news reports as a child of the attrocities being committed and the famine that was gripping the country. The reality of what went on here is almost unbelievable.

each square is a mass grave, each containing several hundred bodies.

"Magic Tree"! Used to hang a speaker from to drown out the cries of the victims. This was so the victims didn't know what was going on, and also so the local farmers didn't hear the cries.

Unlike most sites in the rest of the world, the Killing fields have only been partially excavated. This means that when you walk around, you come across bits of clothes and bones sticking out of the ground......
