We had heard that the boat trip from Siem Reap to Battambang was very attractive but when we were told that it would entail 9 hours in an uncomfortable wooden longtail boat we opted to get a comfortable and relatively speedy bus that would only take 5 hours instead. When we arrived we felt like celebrities at a premier as the Battambang bus station staff had realised foreigners don't like being hassled by touts the second they get off a bus and had set up a barricade that the rather aggressive touts were camped behind, shouting and waving at us as we collected our bags from the hold. We had a shortlist of hotels we thought sounded ok in The Lonely Planet and when we saw a tout from one of them we went to speak ... read more

11 hours worth of bouncy Cambodian buses later and i'm in Battambang, the countries second largest city.........with approximately 3 bars!!!! Found a really good hotel with HUGE rooms, massive, and only $4 each!! It was already early evening, so we went straight out for food, and found a really good place. I ordered Beef Volcano. Basically really good raw beef, salad, rice & a chilli peanut sauce, oh and a cooking device, so again, i got to cook my own food!! Had a beer with the food, but failed to find any other bars to continue, so called it a night. Up early next day and had a hearty breakfast of pho (noodle soup) with a brew and a chocolate & banana ice cream shake. A little street boy came up to the table and altho ... read more

Both me and Lynn caught colds. I was a sorry sight, of course being far more ill than Lynn ever was or ever could be. I nearly had to send out an S.O.S to the St John's Ambulance Service to come stir my lemsips for me. But it is unpleasant having a cold in heat and humidity. It felt like and in fact it was getting hotter by the day, April being the hottest month in Cambodia. While I had this cold I just lay soaked in sweat under a fan turned up full blast. I'd hate to be seriously ill in a climate like this. The Cardamom mountains and the Koh Kong conservation corridor are as yet unspoilt. It seems a bit unusual to me when I think of the commercial selling out of the ... read more

Monday we had the whole day to spend as we wanted in Battambang. This was the first time I can remember coming to a new place with almost no idea of what it would be like, no map of the city layout in my head, no idea what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to ride the bamboo train and and eat frogs, but we had done that in our first afternoon. Now what? Mr Kim had plenty of ideas. We said we wanted to see a bit of the countryside and anything else he thought would be interesting, so we ended up having a mini-tour of Cambodian industry. I may not have the order correct, but our tour included the following: The Ice Factory: this is where they make the huge blocks of ... read more

Oh my, what a day….Just hum the Gilligan's Island theme song while you read. We spent eight hours on a boat between Siem Reap and Battambang. Eight hot, overcrowded hours with the most fascinating scenery along the Tonle Sap River. Small boats of all kinds - fishing boats, boats delivering goods and people, and even delivering motorcycles from one side of the river to the other in the absence of a bridge. Tiny fishing boats, no bigger than a small canoe; tiny children alone on long narrow boats; boats full of produce, or monks, or fishing nets. Our boat ticket was a printed piece of paper with a photograph of a sleek, high capacity cruising boat. This ticket was exchanged for a multicolored ticket with an even sexier-looking boat. This was exchanged for a ride on ... read more

Well, the quick shopping trip in Battambang turned into an hour and a half ordeal, but we got makeup galore for the girls and toy trucks for the boys. Rey explained that these were things that their parents would not be able to afford to buy then, so these items would be greatly appreciated. Church supposedly starts at 10:00 and runs until noon. We arrived at about 10:30 and there was no one around. We came in and miraculously, people started streaming in. Within 10 minutes the place was full and the singing started. There are probably about 30 people in the congregation, which is pretty large considering the size of the village and the fact the 95% of Cambodians are Buddhist. The service was spirited, the singing was great and the sermon was mercifully short. ... read more

I had emailed Som a couple of months ago asking him to arrange for a driver and car or van to take us to Battambang on Saturday, take him along with Rey and the kids to Boung Priene for the night and pick us up on Sunday morning to take us to Boung Priene for church. Rey’s dad is the pastor of New Life Church there. It is where I stayed while I was in Cambodia in 2004. There is no hotel in the village and the facilities there - well, let’s just say camping would be an upgrade. Hence, the hotel in Battambang. The plan was to then return us to our hotel Sunday evening and return Som and family to Phnom Penh where he would register for his next semester in school on Monday. ... read more

So, I have persuaded Mitchy that the life of a fugitive is not for him (although I occasionally do wish he would be locked up, just for a day or two) so we will declare ourselves as overstayers at the border to gain another couple of days in Battembang. We will have our hero Mr Seng, owner of the hotel and general all round extraordinaire with us as he will be taking us to Bangkok. So against all expectations at the beginning of our stay in Battembang we are still here. Our second day in Battembang started with the second major marital dispute of the trip as we searched for food and a laundry in the heat, unsure of where we were and still pining for Siem Reap, marital disputes though aren‘t really on level playing ... read more

We have managed to reluctantly drag ourselves away from Siem Reap and are now in Battambang! Our last night in Siem Reap was spent having dinner at the Khmer Family Restaurant with Ara, our waitress from the Khmer Kitchen. The kids found it really hard to say goodbye to her and to the children from the street. After dinner we walked back to catch a tuk tuk and from out of the shadows of the market came Paul, our tuk tuk driver from the temples and the lake, with a gift of a traditional scarf for each of the children, such a gorgeous gesture which made leaving even more difficult. This reluctant feeling did not ease with the bus trip, hotel organization or arrival in Battambang. Booking bus tickets involved a bit of haggling, which ... read more

Day 52/53/54 - Battambang We've just been having the best time torturing Rob with all kinds of pranks. Unfortunately, since we are hoping other friends will be joining us we can't reveal any of them now. But the two us have spent the last 3 days laughing it up at poor Rob's expense (but don't worry, he absolutely loves it). He also has provided us with such comic relief such as telling us he doesn't want to "be a sheep that cried wolf" (yeah, that is a direct quote). Our childhood dreams of having a little brother to pick on has truly been answered. The first day in Battambang was pretty chill since we had such an early wake up call that morning and it was another scorching day in Cambodia. However, the next day (Sunday ... read more
