After 30 days in the country, tourists need to head out to get a new stamp and a fresh 30 days. Our northern trip was for this purpose. We have enjoyed taking the local buses around this area. They are dirt cheap, and you get to be around the locals more, who are very pleasant and friendly. We spent 1 night in Mae Sai. In the evening, we found a guest house where the South African manager briefed us on the area. There are legal border crossings, and also illegal ones. While on the balcony, he told us we were actually in Burma. Ambitious Thais kept building closer and closer to the river. Eventually, it grew past the marker stone. So we could be in 2 places at once. On the left foot, Burma time 8 ... read more

Still Thursday 18th October I am now in the town of Tachileik in Myanmar. Probably sounds as though I am on the go and wearing myself to a frazzle. Ok, so I was in Burma for just a day to renew my Thailand visa but i am sure I will be having many more Blogs from Thailand and I probably won't make it back to Burma (though I would like to). Burma was kind of nice, but I only experienced a border town. Burma is much poorer than Thailand and you know it the minute you cross the bridge into Burma (i know it is called myanamar now but the people are still Burmese). But this is nice, fewer tourist, more raw and more "real" than some places. I wished I had the time to explore it a little more. The trouble is you can't go into Burma overland (well just to three towns you can) due to government regulations. It is a military government ... read more

Sept 1 - Slow Boat to Pakbeng Sept 2 - Slow Boat to Houy Xai Sept 3 - Into Thailand and a bus to Chiang Rai Sept 4 - Jeep tour of Chiang Rai, Hill tribes, the Golden Triangle and up to the border town of Mae Sai Sept 5 - tour of Tachilek, Myanmar and journey down to Chiang Mai From Luang Prabang, we got on the 2 day slow boat up the Mekong to the Thai border. Of course, you could make it all the way to the border in 7 hours on a fast boat, if you wanted - but they say that on the speed boats, 'fatal accidents occur with alarming frequency.' That is, there are fatal accidents - WEEKLY! That's just crazy - and Lao Airlines was sort of out of ... read more
