The City of Temples 14-15 May 2008 This was by no means my first visit to Rajshahi. But I could manage little time for sightseeing during my earlier visits. This tour was different, at least, from time availability point of view. Even though this was a visit in work purpose, I had some time to spend during the morning as my work needed me during the afternoon. As always, whenever I go on tour I try to have a look around with whatever time I have in my hand. Sometimes, even an hour’s break between work was enough for me. At Rajshahi I had the whole morning with me. So, I devised some plans that would enable me to utilise the whole morning hours. I knew from my previous searches that Puthia Palace is one of ... read more

4 glorious days off work stretched in front of us - how should we spend it? Drinking tea and sheltering from the horrendous daily onslaught of Dhaka noise seemed like a sensational way to escape. We rose early on Friday morning to catch the 4 hour train ride to the northern state of Sylhet, renowned world wide for it's magnificent tea. The jam-packed train station was the usual source of panic for me, made worse by the combination of extreme interest in my sensationally white skin and the presence of Dylan, our friends' baby boy. 8 white people, 2 of them extremely tall, 1 carrying a fair headed, blonde child in a massive backpack, all wandering aimlessly on an overcrowded platform - perfect early morning viewing for the multitude of locals! The train finally arrived and ... read more

Sundarbans is world’s largest mangroove forest and a world heritage area. Sundarbans consists of many small and tiny forest islands. The indigenous people are totally dependent on nature for their livelihood. They either catch fish or cut wood or collect honey from the forest. The whole area is very dense with forests and water. The roots of trees in mangrove forests come out of the earth vertically and stand above water-there are pores in the roots through which the trees breathe. Because of these roots-that stick out of earth-it is absolutely impossible to walk through the forests. Sundarbans is the habitat of world famous Royal Bengal Tigers and many crocodiles, monkeys, snakes and of course, deer are found there. But it is a matter of sheer luck to get the sight of any animal other than ... read more

As May Day was a holiday, me and my mum (my dad's currently in the UK on a visit) decided to go to Cox's Bazar, to have a break from Dhaka and to see and swim in the sea, namely the Bay of Bengal..why not? Cox's Bazar is on the south-easterly tip of Bangladesh, not far from the border with Myanmar (Burma) - the weird extra 'bit' at the bottom of Bangladesh, almost as an afterthought. The region was frequented by the Mogh pirates, along with the Portuguese, who ravaged the Bay of Bengal in the 17th century (thanks, Lonely Planet). The name 'Cox's Bazar' comes from Captain Hiram Cox, a Brit, who founded the town as a refuge for the Arakanese (who, you say?), who were fleeing their homes after the invasion of the Burmese. ... read more

hello there friends. its official--i have spent nearly 24 hours in our new country! for my spring holidays i decided to sneak a peek into the crystal ball and figure out why everyone is raving about dhaka. no...wait...i guess by everyone i mean me. and "raving" may not be the best choice of words. anyway, without getting into a semantic migrane, lets move on. i wanted to see what life was holding for jen and i next year. i wanted to visit the school. i wanted to visit my good friends justin and kelly. as a seasoned traveller i know that pinning all hope on first impressions is a terrible thing to do. however, i must say that this place, even though i could be on the surface of mars, really has a quirky laidback charm ... read more

Saturday night is drawing in and the back-to-work-tomorrow feeling is setting in, but for the meantime I'm going to explain what I/my parents and friends did this weekend. Thursday was Mother Language Day, which celebrates those who died trying to save the language of Bangla (a successful fight obviously), so we have had a 3 day weekend..not that it has felt like one! On Thursday I didn't do much..went for a ludicrously expensive (in taka terms) lunch with friends at the Westin, a v posh hotel not too far from our house..and then went to a friend's house to play a horse-racing game which is slightly complicated but it was fun especially as we ordered curry and all the works during it! My parents and I decided to go to Sonargaon on Friday, which was this ... read more

Although living in Dhaka can be tough at times, there are some great things about it, for me. I fully realise some points in the list below can't be enjoyed by everyone in B'desh whether as a tourist or a resident, but there you have it. I'm well aware I'm incredibly lucky to be in this country and enjoy so much of it in ways many millions of people here can't due to not being British/white/able to earn a half-decent salary (I work at a local school and earn a local salary, but I know it's still more than the majority)/other factors I'm well aware of. I'm just trying to defend myself a bit here as I've had a few comments about this particular blog entry along the lines of how I sound elitist/prejudiced/patronising etc etc, ... read more

The principle of WCA, Marilou, puts on a Christmas party and dinner for all the teachers. Fun times were had by all as we ate dinner on their roof and played a gift exchange game. We managed to get 25 or so people in the living room for some carol singing and a devotional from Marilou about the special town of Bethlehem and its significance to the Christmas story. I had a fun time bonding with other teachers.... read more
