Can't believe it's been over a month since I've written...mostly cos not much has happened and I've been so busy at school. It's that time of the term when reports are due, parent-teacher conferences are happening as well as exams which I have to make up...when's the next holiday again?! Anyway thought I'd add a few more photos to enhance people's idea of Bangladesh which seems to be woefully inaccurate...by the way, yes we did suffer a cyclone as you may have seen on the news, about 5000 dead so far but Dhaka itself hardly suffered so I was fine. We are collecting old but good winter clothing for the cyclone-stricken so please contribute to your local Oxfam etc if you can, people really need it. Although it's hardly winter by British standards (it's dropped to ... read more

November 24, 2007 - 9:30 AM PST and 11:30 PM Bangladesh Time Hello From Bangladesh: I am pooped and need to crash - but wanted to get this blog going. I have a Internet hardwired connection to my room. Muhammad Yunus will speak to us in the morning - VERY exciting. They passed out schedule and tons or reading materials. I saw the third world first hand coming from airport - what an experience - horns blowing, cars and pedestrians totally intermingled with rickshaws, animals, etc. The Great Adventurer ... read more

Hi all, Everything is fine in old Dhaka town. We were warned to batten down the hatches Thursday night as the cyclone mad land fall down south classed as a category 4. It arrived at around midnight to Dhaka with 100km/h winds. Mates have told stories of seeing trees horizontal and the sky full of debris. YOu know me though. I slept write through it! ... read more

And the answer is to stare! Yes Bangladesh is certainly a country of starers... But it is friendly and curious stares and when you flash the gazers a smile, you will see a sea of smiles returning... Give them the Muslim greeting of Salaam Alaikum and you will have made a thousand friends! Not many tourists go to Bangladesh, which is unfortunate, because it has a lot to offer... Friendly locals, historic sights, beaches, beautiful and serene countryside’s, and an interesting culture... On top of this the country is a lot cheaper than India... Bangladesh is also a country of cycle rickshaws... Yes, here the cycle rickshaw rules the street, not the car... This makes the smaller town pleasantly quiet, with only the ringing of the rickshaws to disturb the peace... And of course Bangladesh is ... read more

Blogger Dougo We have just returned from a trip to the Sundarbans National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of mangrove forest, jungle, tidal rivers and grasslands. It was with great anticipation that we left Dhaka at around 9:30pm on Thursday, with our tour company, The Guide Tours. After viewing a pride of 20 odd lions in Africa, I was so hoping to get a glimpse on the reclusive Bengal tiger on this trip. On a 20 seater bus with Bec and I were a bunch of other teachers from ISD including our French teacher Francois' mum. Having heard horror stories about the travel time from Dhaka to the boat, we were having bets about what time we would actually arrive at the river. I volunteered 8:30am (11 hours). Fortunately for us, at around 6am ... read more

I'm on holiday at the moment (and I so deserve it!) so I decided to take my little self off to the Sundarbans and join a boat trip consisting mostly of teachers from my mum's school. I had heard from others that had been on this trip that it was primarily about relaxation as you just meander along on the boat keeping an eye out for wildlife (including Bengal tigers) and do as much or as little as you want. Perfect, I thought! Dhaka can be quite hectic...you spend an enormous amount of time in the car in traffic jams doing nothing but it's hot and busy so a few days doing nothing at all sounded good. Here are a few facts for you fact lovers (or not...): -The Sundarbans forest is one of the largest ... read more

Blogger Dougo Last weekend, I played m third round of golf at The Army Golf Course. All the courses are owned and operated by the Bangladeshi Army. I am not sure why. Greg, Paddy and Mike, three teachers from school, and I played 15 holes before we had to get Mike's car back home. I wasn't complaining. Having played like shite for the first 5 holes, I won the next 2 holes for me and Paddy and dropped my first birdie on the 8th. It was all downhill from there though and by the 13th I was dragging my feet and could barely swing the club. 30+ degree heat takes its toll and when you have to walk twice as far coz you can't hit the ball straight down the middle, you get stuffed pretty ... read more

Well, I guess the word saga has certain connotations to it. It wasn't all THAT bad. A little, but hey. Well, it started off by us gals heading off to a Bengali beauty parlour, yes you heard me, to be "assembled". It really is a complicated procedure. One that I could never achieve in 7 lifetimes. This involved heading into a changing room with 3 other AYADs and a multitude of sari technicians, some of which came and went as freely from the room as you would any other room minus self-conscious semi naked people. I felt a little exposed. Anyway, it took around 20 minutes and we were done. Very tightly around the stomach mind you. Regretted not amending this at the time, as I was filling my stomach with rice and chicken later in ... read more

I'm not even certain of what day it is today, everything is a whirlwind of information, and an assault on the senses and conscience. I'm so exhausted, but content. Yesterday I found a place to live. On the edge of Dhanmondi, a 'suburb' of Dhaka that is a cultural hub of the city. We have been staying in a hotel on the other side of Dhaka, the side of Dhaka where most of the expats live. Here you will find many things catering to Western needs and it is also a great place, but is somewhat of a bubble to live in. The others will be living here. Out of my intake, I'll be the only one on the 'other side' but there are some other workers living there that I have already met, and I ... read more

I hate talking in the third person, I find it terribly pretentious but I like the alliteration. Has a nice ring to it, eh? So yeah, I'm in Bangers. Arrived midnight Bengali time, about 4am Australian time. As the plane was landing, the captain informed us that it was 39 degrees celsius outside...and it was midnight!! I had been worried about going through customs what with my year's supply of cockroach baits, anti-mould thingys and um...mooncakes given to me in Singapore, but it turns out there was none. Not for 'us'. We just got waived through, as the locals had to go through the process. I was glad, because I was tired and poopy with customs for confiscating my toothpaste, sunscreen (they aint got none in Bangers, and yeah its hot), and a few other 'liquids' ... read more
