Well, after holidaying in Thailand and transiting Dubai I finally landed (late in April) in that most wonderful of countries, Afghanistan. I'm only being partially ironic. Indeed there is much to Afghanistan that could be wonderful. But the present reality is one of unmitigated tragedy. Landing on a grey, raining day in Kabul and being hustled into body armour and escorted by a team of "shooters" is not the most inspiring of welcomes. Neither is reading day after day of security briefings that report explosions and deaths. Operation Moshtarak (the latest surge in Helmand) was according to one report an unmitigated disaster in that more than 70% of the local people are MORE disaffected after the clearing for the Taliban than before - I'm on my way there now, so we'll see. If anyone is interested in seeing it, have them email me. ** Following the training exercise in Southern California, I spent a week in the Whistler area with Erin while she worked at the Olympics. We flew to Saskatoon together and I was able to spend 2 days there before heading back to Ottawa. A few friends came over on the last night I was home and saw me off. What followed were 2 additional weeks in Kingston and a final one in Ottawa. We did receive an unexpected long weekend when we were given the last Monday-Tuesday off. Als ik hier in Kabul ben, is er eigenlijk alleen maar werk. Dat begint zodra je ’s morgens opstaat, en het gaat door tot je ’s avonds weer naar bed gaat. Er zijn weinig mogelijkheden voor ontspanning, dus je bent eigenlijk altijd met werk bezig. Maar gisteravond gingen we uit eten met een paar mensen. We waren met zijn drieën: Een Duitser, een Afghaanse Duitse, en ik. De Afghaanse Duitse, Laila, vluchtte met haar moeder naar Duitsland toen ze 3 jaar oud was. Haar vader was in de jaren ’80 gevangen genomen door de Russen, en ook Laila en haar moeder waren niet veilig. Laila ging dus in Duitsland naar school en heeft daar haar vrienden. It rained for most of the week last week. Mostly just some light rains during the evenings, but one night there was a major thunderstorm that lit the sky and sounded like a bomb going off! (New meaning to that phrase when you speak it in a war-torn country). When the spring rains come to Calgary, it cleans our streets, brightens our cars, and open our olfactory senses. Kabul turns into a mudhole. The mud that slickens the city streets of Kabul is of the perfect consistency to drive any five-year old into an addict's overdose seizure. Usually of a greyish-brown soft dust, the streets (being not of the 'civilized' world of crowned roads that sluice our dirty waters underground) soak themselves into miles of mud-pie-making mania. Eergisteren, in het vliegtuig terug naar Kabul, kreeg ik een Nederlandse krant in de hand gedrukt. Daarin stond een stukje over een man uit Saoedi-Arabie. Hij had het gewaagd om in een praatprogramma op een Libanese TV zender (die in Saoedi-Arabie veel bekeken wordt) openlijk over seks te praten. Hij werd per omgaande gearresteerd. Zijn zaak is inmiddels in hoger beroep voor de rechter geweest, en zijn uiteindelijke straf is vastgesteld op duizend (!) zweepslagen en 5 jaar cel. De rechter zal geprobeerd hebben hem een dergelijk gedrag voorgoed af te leren. Er stond niet bij of de straf gebaseerd was op wat hij vertelde (hij was op zijn 14e “ontmaagd” door de buurvrouw) of vanwege het feit dat hij er over vertelde.
